I am an American female embarking on a backpacking journey this summer through Mexico and Belize, with a couple little dips into Guatemala. I now live in San Francisco, California, having just moved back to the USA after living nearly 12 years in Barcelona, Catalunya (some would say, Spain) and therefore am fluent in Spanish and can understand Catalan. I also lived about 6 months in Oaxaca, Mexico and traveled quite a bit through Oaxaca and Chiapas, which was a fairly life changing experience. I am fairly comfortable vagabonding around, taking colectivos and I love sitting on curbs talking to people for hours on end =) My idea of travel is to take my time to get to know places and, more importantly, the people who live there.
I am a birth and postpartum doula, working to support and empower women during their pregnancies and during / after birth. I am currently on a path towards midwifery, very much inspired by my travels through Chiapas actually! So this summer trip is my never-a-last-hurrah before applying to nurse-midwifery graduate school programs this fall.
I was an Airbnb host for my last couple years in Barcelona, renting out the spare room in my flat and offering off tons of advice and tips to my guests, so I absolutely understand what it is like to have the constant flow of visitors. I am also, therefore, incredibly trustworthy and respectful of your space and time.
What else ... as I am traveling alone and on a budget, I am looking for safe and friendly refuge along the way at a price ideally under $25 USD a night.
Thanks, and I hope to meet you along the journey!
