When i travel, i like to look for things that i wouldn't experience at home. The more I travel, the more apparent it becomes that so many things are completely streamlined and uniform. For instance, most of the clothes that people wear all over of the world are exactly the same - China, Chile, Kazakstan and Belgium - its all the same.
I would guess 75% of the people in the world watch the same tv and film for at least 50% of their viewing time. Facial gestures are also increasingly the same same i think which is probably due to watching the same TV. And since people eat the same (processed) food they also start to look alike regardsless of where you are! That's great if the alternative is malnutrition, but it also makes it more difficult to experience something unique.
So the task is to find this thing. It doesnt have to be big, great, astonishing, clever, etc. It can even be somewhat unpleasant (like Chinese sea cucumber (never again)).
A former official in a ministry of finance i moved to Paris to work for an international think tank. I travel a lot for work and enjoy it tremendously. Paris is fine and so are the French (context matters ...). The last holiday i took was to Brittany which i can strongly recommend. Go to Dinard. Go now. I am of Canadian/Danish decent with studies in the UK and Austria. This makes for an interesting lilt.
Books I am currently reading are Edward St Aubyn and Deon Meyer. Favorite films include Glen Garry Glen Ross and most things by John Landis. TV serie favorites are things like Game of Thrones, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Seinfeld, Simpons, The Wire, My name is Earl, House of Cards.
