Wonderful, peaceful and gorgeous! We had a wonderful time at Playa Negra! This sleepy beach town was a welcome change from the excess tourism in Tamarindo. Karina was a wonderful host, greeted us upon arrival, made amazing breakfast and coffee every morning. They were super informative, gracious, and kind. Their suggestion for dinner at the local wood oven pizza was amazing! The rooms were clean, and the property was very secure. We would definitely stay here again!
We stayed at the Surf Bungalows for eight days and we certainly fell in love with Playa Negra and the friends that we made while there. First off, Karina was very responsive and always replied to my many questions within hours prior to our arrival. She arranged an airport pickup for us as well, which was very helpful to us. We didn't have the pleasure of meeting Karina in person, but she took care of us and all of our request from afar :) She was a gracious hostess. Thank you Karina for everything.
Our experience at the Surf Cabinas was nothing but positive! The cabina was comfortable and quaint, and very close to the main road and also the beach. The best part about our stay was the very warm hospitality and pleasant smiles shared by Manu! He was always available and very accommodating, making sure that all of our needs were met. And his cooking.... OH MY! He is a master chef! He spoiled us with his delicious home cooked dinners.
Waking up to fresh fruit and a cup of the most delicious coffee was a treat! And just a short walk to the most beautiful coastline to watch the sun set over the ocean. Manu was also a very good surf teacher - patient and experienced. We can't thank Manu enough for making our experience in CR a memorable one. Thank you again, Manu!
We would definitely stay at the Surf Bungalows again.
Our stay was perfect, I highly recommend this rental! It was close to the beach, the house was equipped with everything we needed and was beyond comfortable!
Casa Naranja is the perfect beach house! We felt right at home immediately. Everything was clean and worked well (wifi, hot water, water pressure, appliances, etc) The house is very charming with super spacious bedrooms, large closets, beach showers, an amazing porch that wraps around the whole second floor, and a 3rd floor roof deck where you can look at the stars and wonder why you don't live in Costa Rica permanently. The walk to the beach is very quick (just a couple minutes) and the area felt very safe. It's on the playa negra hotel property so there is a gate with security. The hotel also has great food if you don't feel like cooking at home. We would definitely go back. Hopefully soon!
If you like what you see in the pictures then be prepared to be surprised at how much better it is in person. Rooftop balcony is amazing especially at night. Never seen so many stars. Took surf lessons from a great teacher from the Hotel which was just a walk away. Karina the host was very quick with her replies and was very helpful. For a house in a country where insects are all over the place it was pretty free of insects. Can't keep them all out but I slept comfortably. Bottom line the place was great and I'd go back again. Side note, All day ATV rentals can be found in Playa Flamingo with Flamingo Adventures. No tour just ride free the way you should.
Before we went back to Europe this was our last stay in Costa Rica. ... and its been one of the best. We stayed for 3 days at the red bungalow which is simple and comfy at the same time and located (email hidden) garden like the others. There was nothing we missed and if we could we would have stayed a longer time for sure. Karina and Manu are wonderful hosts that are perfectly connected to the local community and always there with helpful tips. Manu is a great cook, surf teacher and very nice guy in one person from whom you can benefit a lot. Other travelers staying in these bungalows were also very nice and we made some good friends during that time.
After all we can highly recommend this place and hope to come back soon. Pura Vida at Playa Negra!

We had a very nice stay at Casa Naranja. The place is spacious and has a wonderful wrap around porch. Bedrooms and bathrooms were generally nice and the kitchen is certainly adequate. There are ceiling fans in every room, but no AC. This was not really an issue for us since we had nice breezes during our stay and the second floor position maximized those breezes. Casa Naranja has a nice setting that is a short walk to the beach (3 minutes). It is conveniently located adjacent to the Hotel Playa Negra with access to their restaurant and surf shop, but notably not their pool. I am not sure if the hotel would consider a resort fee for use of the pool, but this could be a consideration for a family with children.
Karina did an excellent job and was very responsive and very accommodating.
I would definitely stay at the place again! Cheers!
This is the THE place to stay in Guanacaste for those who like to surf, relax, find adventure, make friends, and/or just absorb another culture. Staying at Manu's surf cabinas was so much more than a typical BnB experience - my friend and I felt like we were part of a community. Manu and Karina are kind, considerate, and very well connected with the local community - they know everything and everyone in the area. They will go out of their way to make sure your stay is fun. The cabinas are extremely comfortable, safe, and private - with comfortable beds and a nice bathroom. The decor is simple/minimalist, yet cozy. The included breakfast provided in the morning is simple - just right to start the day (to include good Costa Rican coffee). When you get there, you can talk to Manu about coordinating dinner at the cabinas for certain nights - which I highly recommend because he is an exceptional chef. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby to grab lunch/dinner - from local Tico cuisine, to Peruvian food, to pizza, to Cali-style tacos. As for the digs, they are called "surf cabinas" because they are a short 10 minute walk to Playa Negra beach, which has great surf (for beginners and advanced surfers alike), snorkeling, and fishing. Manu is also a great surfer (a local legend in the area) and teaches surf lessons. If you are interested in learning to surf I highly recommend talking to him and coordinating some very affordable lessons. Heads up that this is not for folks looking for a five-star hotel or BnB in a tourist town. The location is rustic and away from fancy hotels and expat neighborhoods/compounds. However, Playa Negra and the adjacent town of Los Pargos are extremely safe, the locals are very friendly, and English is widely spoken. It is the perfect nexus between a comfortable western-style BnB and the local Tico lifestyle. We stayed here for 10 days and it was really difficult to leave. Could not have asked for a better trip to Costa Rica - thank you Manu and Karina! We've both said we'll go back to this incredible country, and these surf cabinas will definitely be part of future trips. Pura vida!
