I'm a designer and native Californian-- first 25 years in Southern California, the second part in San Francisco, and now loving my life in beautiful Hawaii.
we had a nice stay in robert's studio. he has a fun design sensibility, and it's quite beautiful and peaceful where he's located -- you're very much away from it all. the house is comfortable, although its location required some extra driving.
Terrific host, amazing home, perfect location!
Hands down our best trip to the Big Island. Robert was an gracious host during our stay, with extraordinary attention to detail, in both his beautifully appointed home and in making sure we had everything we needed during our trip. We were particularly interested in taking a 4WD drive down into Waipio Valley which Robert went so far as to call his friends for perspective. We always felt like we were in good hands getting recommendations and if we ever needed any assistance… before, during, and even after.
The house is beautiful on the inside and out. It's PERFECTLY situated, close enough for a relatively short radius to a lot of really cool places but remote enough to be amidst nature. The lava flow it's built on is truly a sight to see (on a huge lanai). The ocean is just a stone's throw away, running alongside a scenic road en route to the house. We particularly enjoyed the more 'local' feel on the Hilo side (in contrast to Kona side that we found to be commercial / resort-saturated in past visits) --- and the house's particular proximity to everything was perfect. It made going to some must-see sights (Volcanoes NP, Waipio Valley, Mauna Kea, Akaka Falls, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden) far more enjoyable not having to traverse a far larger distance coming/going. In fact most times I was surprised by how little time it took that were able to easily add in a destination on the fly without a ton of planning or uncertainty…
Would highly recommend staying at Pohakunani!
We had a great time at Roberts place and he was always very nice and helpful!
We LOVED our stay! Robert is lovely - warm, helpful, available and generous. The house was perfect- beautiful views and setting, great layout of the space, near to the astoundingly beautiful coast, the black sand beaches, the tide pools...just driving places was a pleasure. It was both as peaceful and as exciting as we wanted.
Robert's home was the perfect location for our first visit to Hawaii. His home is a verdant paradise at the end of a relaxing drive. He went out of this way to ensure that we were comfortable and knew of all local attractions. Two nights allowed us to spend ample time in Volcano National Park, the Warm Ponds, checking out the rocky coastline and eating some delicious food in Pahoa. You really need to experience this!
Robert is a great host – open minded, helpful and very friendly. The house is light-flooded and you have a nice view into a beautiful garden with solidified lava. We really enjoyed out stay and felt very comfortable.
An excellent stay at this beautiful house for two nights on our honeymoon. Robert was a friendly and courteous host and the property was just as good, if not better than the pictures show. Set in and on an old lava flow the surrounding area is amazing. Nice and quiet for anyone who is looking to relax and enjoy the big island.
Super large studio, next to the main house, which perfectly fitted our family of four (kids 7 and 10). The decoration is amazing, applicances are top quality, the swimming pool is incredible, the garden is beautiful with exotic plants and a you have a lava field at your foot step. Peaceful atmosphere with adorable owners. Relaxed diners, with eventually the visit of an adorable white Jack Russel from next door, named Spanky. Perfect location to visit the volcano park, the fish pools and the black sand beaches.
We had a great stay in Robert's guest house.
Bed was comfortable and kitchen had everything we needed for making breakfast and smoothies in the morning.
Location was great for visiting beaches along the Red Road (Hwy 137), Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and Hilo. Our favorite was snorkeling at Kapoho Tide Pools.
We found a place 6 min away from Robert's place that made healthy and delicious lunch sandwiches, at Kalani Oceanside Retreat.
For dinner you can either go to Kalani Oceanside Retreat (we did not try this, but they told us dinner is open for everyone, I think you might have to sign up earlier the same day). There's a burger place across the street from the parking leading to Kaimu Beach.
Bigger variety of restaurants can be found in Pahoa, 33 min drive from the house.
We had a great stay at Robert's guesthouse. The property is gorgeous and the home and grounds are designed to really bring out the beauty of the area. We woke up each morning, made a cup of coffee and went for a swim in the pool. In the evenings we sat on the lanai and looked at the stars, which were unlike any I've ever seen.
Robert was very nice and accommodating, he even recommended us to a friend that guided us on a lava tour one evening. It's a perfect location if you want to check out the volcano and Hilo and other sites on the eastern side of the island are easily accessible.
Highly recommend it!
