Tenaya has a great listing here, well stocked and cozy. The fire was set, and ready to light, there were treats in the fridge, and tranquil calm on the property.
The location here is perfect, a moments walk to the dunes, where you can spend the day walking and exploring, or lounging on a hammock Tenaya has set up on a hill.
A great getaway spot!
Clara's Cottage exceeded our expectations once again -- quite remarkable given that this was our second stay! We enjoyed all our favorite elements from our first stay (very well-designed and comfortable space/layout of the cottage, the outdoor tub, cozy wood stove, beautiful garden, delicious homemade muffins and jam) plus some new treats: watching the sun set across the dunes from the hammock, admiring the burst of spring flowers in the garden, making a short drive to Russian Gulch State Park where we hiked to a waterfall.
As always, Tenaya's attention to detail and graciousness as a host is wonderful! Clara's Cottage is truly a magical retreat!
I can't say enough about Tenaya and The Rose Cottage. My mom and I spent 3 days here and it was truly wonderful. Tenaya is a gracious host and the cottage and grounds are one of a kind. The cottage is cozy and lovingly decorated and Tenaya provided us with delicious homemade muffins and jam the first day. I highly recommend this place and we will be back!
The stay here was incredible. One of the best things I've done in a long time. Beautiful and peaceful, our favorite things were the outdoor bath and the dune beach (both things unique to this cottage). Tenaya is so nice and stocked the fridge with great muffins and home-made jam and helped me out and took the time to get to know me, even though I was a little technologically clueless about AirBnB. I really hope to return soon.
My wife and I make several trips a year to the Fort Bragg/ Mendocino area and have been doing so for the past 23 years. One of our yearly trips is always for our anniversary ( we honeymooned in Fort Bragg) and this year was no different. However, this was our first time using airbnb and we couldn't have possibly found a nicer, peaceful, and more serene venue than the Rose Cottage at Dune Gardens. Tenaya and Ed were perfect hosts in making my bride and I feel so welcome. Tenaya took us on a tour of the garden area as well their other cottages and spent the time insuring we had all we needed, even making sure we had firewood for the outdoor pit which we very much enjoyed. The cottage was perfect, the bed extremely comfortable, the hot water ... wow, you don't need to worry about a hot shower, the kitchen though small ( I'm an ox!) was more than ample for our needs and we for the first time, besides when we're camping, were able to cook all our meals comfortably. I appreciated the stock of spices available that kept me from having to make a journey into town, The woodstove, as Tenaya pointed out, is more than able to warm the cottage. I was struck pleasantly by the lengths that Tenaya and Ed went to make us feel right at home. So much attention given to the little details, from making the wood stove ready for a fire to providing fresh little muffins and homemade 10 Mile Plum Preserves for us, those little touches meant a lot and I am most appreciative of it. The dunes are a must and are literally in their backyard. A short walk down their drive and a quick couple of rights and your smack in the middle of them. The Middleton's lovingly provided a hammock on top of one of the dunes and it's a perfect vantage point to take the dunes system in or just lay back and enjoy the ocean breeze and sounds of the surf. We couldn't have possibly chosen a more perfect location to celebrate our 23rd wedding anniversary or more perfect hosts. My wife and I are already putting our heads together trying figure out when we can come back and enjoy this beautiful place once again and hopefully longer than 2 days, it just wasn't enough time to take it all in. Thank you again Tenaya and Ed, you made our stay one of the most memorable times we've ever had on the north coast, see you soon ... we hope !
Tenaya was a great host. I know there are a lot of reviews for this cottage, so let me write a few quick tips for the reader than necessarily a straight-up review of the place.
First, of course, as with a lot of the AirBNB listings, these are people opening up their homes as opposed to a hotel or a resort. Its a charming and unique house. Its a great experience. It has a cute outdoor bath. Again -- think an outdoor bath in a real farm-like house with a lot of garden area. You can picnic outside, watch the birds (they get a lot of finches, stellar jays, blue jays etc), watch the stars from the garden and so on.
The two other cool things that you can do are -- going out into the dunes and the glass beach. The dunes are super secluded. We were the only people there. Its fantastic to watch the sky from the top of the dunes. If you do venture out post-dusk it is incredibly easy to get lost. Be warned. We were very well prepared with flashlights, headlamps, sleeping bag, google satellite views (maps are useless since you can't navigate the dunes/bushes), cellphone battery. Cellphone is spotty and stay there post sunset only if you are very confident. Please don't read this, venture out and then bother people because you got lost. Having said that, its a super amazing experience to lie there, watch the sunset, drink some wine, watch the planets (jupiter, venus were clearly visible), orion, leo, gemini etc, moving satellites and of course watch the occasional shooting stars.
Glass beach is close to town and its beautiful. They have some fun places to eat nearby. Check yelp. Glass beach has beautiful glass pebbles and jelly fish that you can see in the water.
There are also other beautiful beaches much closer than glass beach. Maybe a 5-minute drive and you can boulder on a rock if you were so inclined.
We were warmly greeted and welcomed by Tanaya and Ed. The Rose Cottage was warm and clean, very comfortable. It was well represented and very comfortably equipped and furnished. The setting is picturesque, quiet, private and peaceful. Tanaya answered all our questions and made some very helpful suggestions.
it was beautiful. half a block to the state park of dunes and open space. beautiful ocean. taking a bath in the garden at night was like being in a midsummer nights dream. the smell of flowers and ocean air enhance it all. this cottage was perfect for one, and tenaya was kind and accommodating of me and my solo female traveler -ness. she thoroughly explained the property, grounds, surrounding areas when I checked in, and did come check on me my second evening too, which was nice but unnecessary. I think she just wanted to make me feel safe and secure, which I totally did through my entire stay. if you're looking for solitude and beauty, this place is perfect. tenaya and her husband live on the property but on the other side of a large deer fence, so if you're lucky enough to come mid week, you may have the run of the whole guest property and gardens like I did. bring a bathrobe if you don't want to walk through the garden in a towel, and a portable speaker if you want to listen to some music while you eat dinner, have a drink, read a book, journal, or just zone out after a day in the dunes:) I'd recommend this place for sure, especially to fellow solo travelers trying to escape the city and the addiction of modern technology. although you can get reception on the beach. at the cottage you are disconnected. it's nice.
Tenaya was a very welcoming host! The goodies she left were delicious. The place was charming, clean and in a great location to explore various state parks and beaches or really just to stay at and relax. The dunes you can walk to from the cottage are very cool and the views from the top are wonderful. We enjoyed sitting outside drinking a cup of tea and looking at the flowers, trees and birds. I would highly recommend staying here!
We had such an amazing time at the Rose Cottage! I could not have asked for a more wonderful way to celebrate my birthday weekend with my girlfriend.
- The Cottage: The listing pictures don't do it justice. The cottage was immaculate and so incredibly charming. Perfect size for the two of us, complete with a toasty wood stove. Great little kitchen that was very well stocked for a full weekend of cooking. We could have holed ourselves up in the cottage all weekend if the dunes weren't so tempting.
- The Setting: Beautifully landscaped yard and gardens. The property is set up in such a way that we were completely undisturbed by guests in other cottages on the property. Just a short walk down the private road to a MacKerricher Dunes access point. The Dunes themselves were stunning, I've never experienced anything quite like it. Just beyond them was a gorgeous stretch of beach with plenty of sand dollars to find while beach combing. We went out for 3 to 4 hours at a time and only came across a couple of people.
- The Host: Tenaya was great! She greeted us promptly upon arrival with her cute little dog Dora to check us in and give us the grand tour of the cottage and gardens. She answered all our questions and supplied us with all the information we would need for the weekend. Tenaya created a very welcoming atmosphere. Homemade blackberry jam and muffin bites were waiting for us in the fridge along with fresh strawberries and coffee. On our last evening lounging on the patio, Tenaya stopped by and left us firewood so we could enjoy the fire pit. Perfect for toasting s'mores!
Overall it was a terrific experience. Such a peaceful and serene environment providing us a much needed escape from the lights and sounds of the city. We cannot wait to come back!
What a wonderful escape! I found the journey mild to and from this truly peaceful and regenerating little home by the sea. I couldn't have asked for more - the weather was fine, the company was friendly, and the gardens, the private beach access, the quiet breeze and flicker of sunlight on the backs of birds fluttering about. Very, very nice.
