Everything was fine; no complaints. Beautiful view into back yard, nice area, great hiking at Edgewood nature preserve 2 mi away. About 2 mi from Caltrain station, groceries, etc. Good taqueria just down the street. Only downside -- neighborhood is extremely pedestrian hostile (no sidewalks!). You'll need a car. I got by with a bike but I'm stubborn like that.
I never met the host. Talking to other guests, I guessed which room must be my room. The room had a distinct pet odor . . . Beware.
Check in went fine. Room was spacious but the bed was a bit old and there was a bit of street noise since the room faces the street.
Maylen seemed intent on scheduling a specific time to meet with me, and I should have done this with her. I tried to schedule within a window of time instead of at a specific time, and she gave me the passcode to her house and the internet access information. I thought she would be away because she said if I came by in the "late evening" she wouldn't be home-- and she said that was actually ideal. So I came by at around 8pm, which I thought was late enough given the window I gave her, but after about thirty minutes she was indeed home. She asked me to re-park along a fenceline a very short block away. The room was not really a "room" in the sense of a "bedroom" in a house that was shared-- it was a living room space/ passageway through the house. It was essentially an adjoining space to a hallway and may as well have been a deep hallway. I found it very uncomfortable because two or three people passed through many times, two people probably 6-8 times total, both of which were males who were up until 2am, closing their doors and leaving hall lights on when they weren't even in the hallway, and didn't need them when they were. Maylen herself came to the room around 1am and basically asked for my only blanket while I was sleeping (she then went and took a different blanket from another bed). I'm not sure what the confusion was with needing blankets that late, or being down in the room in the first place that late to poke around awkwardly and just hang out when it was inhabited, but I think basically Maylen was uncomfortable that I didn't give her an exact time when I would be by and that just kind of threw her off for the night. Additionally the other bed she mentioned she preferred I take had a bed frame that didn't feel as solid as it should have been, it was like a kids bed setup for someone extremely lightweight, and it had a much flimsier mattress, or one that concaved much more easily--possibly because it had no support underneath it. The sheet she had on the bed was very coarse and lightweight, and there was only a very small decorative throw blanket on the bed that barely covered midway down my chest. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with it, or how I was supposed to wear the sheets to keep warm at night. Basically, I couldn't sleep at all and accommodations were very bad. It seems like she's just angling for easy money with her listing. Also the toilet was filled with hardened and crusty poo that I personally cleaned, with my own bathroom cleaner. I wouldn't recommend the place because it wasn't a good place to stay or sleep. The roommates very awkwardly moved through the room and I felt they were staring.
went well the place was clean and quiet.
I've never left a negative review for anyone, anywhere. Please do not be misled by the positive reviews at all! I'm really puzzled by how bad my experience was, because there were so amny positive reviews. All I can say is, please be really, really careful and know what you're getting into. - You are sharing the home with 2 other tenants who come in and out at odd times. They live downstairs at the basement level (sort of), while you live on the main street level. - You're next to the kitchen, living room, and main door. Be prepared for noise from everyone. - Maylen herself woke me up at 3am with her noise in the kitchen. She was making a meal for herself, and it was LOUD. She also opened & closed my bedroom door while I was sleeping at night, and that woke me up too. - The tenant right downstairs watches extremely loud TV, with his windows open, and doesn't really turn it down even when you ask - The room is right next to the road, and the road noise is loud if you keep the windows open (which you have to if it's hot.) It's not a hidden side-street -- the road is a fairly main road in Redwood City - It was 95 degrees on the day I checked in. It was hot! So hot that I was sweating profusely in the bed. I asked Maylen for a fan. She said she would give it to me for $5 a day extra. I told her this seemed unfair because of how uninhabitably hot it was -- she said she was running a business, she said she was already losing money because of renting to me, and she said it wasn't her problem it was so hot. This was a pattern -- when I brought up a problem, she turned accusatory and started being untrue. - Maylen promised me a reduced rate, and gave me 4 nights for the price of two. I took her at her word. When I checked in and asked to check out after just one night (because of the issues above), I told I'd really appreciate it if she could provide ANY type of refund. She immediately responded, "I don't have to do anything for you. You already paid me." She also said, "I'm on sleeping pills, so I won't talk to you right now. Talk to me tomorrow." (She has not responded to any email, text, or phone communication from me or Airbnb since then.) - Speaking of the afore-mentioned fan, she asked me to move it to my room myself. I did so. After checking out, she accused me of "damaging her floors" because of the fan -- again, just inventing untruths. To Airbnb's credit, they heard my story, they couldn't get Maylen to budge, and they more than fully compensated me and helped me find a different home. I hope none of you has go through...
I came to the bay area for a few interviews and found Maylen's place in Redwood City to be a great location. It is near to the caltrain and 40 mins away from downtown San Francisco. The Room is large, bright and very accommodating. Maylen was always available for assistance. The other guests were very courteous. The location is a quiet and peaceful place. It was a great stay for me. Looking forward to return.
Maylen is an amazing host, very welcoming and helpful. The bedroom and the bath are both very clean. It was a pleasure to stay in her house. Next time I'm coming back ;)
Mayleen was very friendly and helpful. The accommodations were good for the pricing. The neighborhood is great and there is a great natural reserve a mile and a half away. The house was great and has a good vibe to it.
Terrific room! Very convenient and comfortable. Maylen is a great and attentive host. Really enjoyed my stay and plan on returning. The peaceful deck and PBR in the fridge were my favorite parts.
