John and Maria were wonderful, gracious hosts. Even though we arrived quite late from the airport for a last-minute trip, they gave travel guidance and greeted us at the door with a glass of wine and warm conversation. The house was fascinating and quaint, delightful to explore and enjoy the one-of-a kind antiques such as a gorgeous wood breakfast bar with a seahorse carved into the paneling.
The room is perfect for one person, but may not be ideal for every couple, since the trundle bed is composed of twin mattresses side-by-side with a slight gap in the middle. Snuggling requires both to "pick a side," or alternately have a gap right underneath one's lumbar.
Also, the bed takes up almost the whole room when pulled out, relegating suitcases to a corner or atop the dresser. We were traveling light but still felt quite confined. In general I would say the room is perfect for a single person, or a couple who does not mind tight quarters. Overall we loved our stay in the home, and are happy that we chose the cottage.
John was very welcoming and helpful. Their posting of their home was accurate. Their home is so close to the beach. It's a great amenity for beach go'ers.
John was very welcoming and went out of his way to connect prior to date of stay.
John and Maria were wonderful hosts.
The old fashioned bathtub was an absolute delight and saved my aching back after a long motorcycle ride:)
Great place to stay. Beth, Misty, and I had a wonderful experience.
We really liked the neighborhood. Quirky, friendly, diverse, with a great beach and some striking and interesting buildings. John and Marie were kind, informative and welcoming. Our stay was very comfortable. A great place for dog lovers.
john made us feel welcome from the start. he was warm when we arrived, and he had the perfect balance of letting us know what was up and giving us our space. great host. the space was exactly what we needed, a sweet little room, nice light, with a backyard for us to have some private space. just be sure you are very comfortable with your roommate...
John and Maria were wonderfull hosts. Very understanding about my giant schnauzer rembontiones and destroying a couple of things along the way. They were very helpful about telling me where to dine and the easiest way to go about it around town. The icing on the cake was when they offered me, in the morning a fresh Quiche right out of the oven with a cup of coffee, what else would you ask for as you are having your morning cigaret and wondering what to do about breakfast ? Strongly recommended . Easy going and real people. Also they offered me a ride from Manhattan to their hose in Asbury Park, which made my travels so much easier, so I have such a large dog. Thanks to you both so you made my experience so much more manageable. I will sure be back. Mauricio Pommé.
John was so very helpful to me. I had planned to do a triathlon event in town, but had to cancel my plans at the last moment. He graciously allowed me to give my highly coveted room to a teammate based on my recommendation. She was in love with the place and so thankful to get the room. I very much appreciate his trust and flexibility.
My experience in John and Maria's home by the shore was even greater than promised! They are both so kind and inviting, that you feel at ease right away with them. They clearly love their home very much and are happy to share its offerings with their guests. John was even kind enough to provide a ride down as we were leaving from about the same place at about the same time anyway! The room was exactly as promised--having the private entrance and bathroom was great, and yet I still felt apart of their home. The couple invited me for wine and cheese and great conversation as they seem to love to do. I definitely would have taken John up on his offer to go flea marketing with him, but I was there for one purpose--the beach! The beach was lovely and so easy to get to with plenty along the boardwalk to keep you busy. If it's high season I would definitely suggest getting there before 11 to get a good spot, but even still it wasn't nearly as crowded as some other beaches can get. John and Maria also have great suggestions for food and drink and I would listen to them for sure!
Now, if you're like me--a solo traveler--just beware, that while John and Maria will do all they can to make your experience great, that not all of Asbury will do the same. Seems more of a place to go with friends, family or loved ones. I always travel alone, but even in Turkey and Poland, I felt more of a connection to people than I did here. Course if you're just looking for some beach time, it's fine!
