Easy going, friendly guy. I've been a guest traveling too and really want you to enjoy your stay. You will not have any hassles.
This was my second visit at this apartment. Again, Al was a great host and very helpful and friendly. I've just seen a previous review making complaints about this place, but that was not my experience at all. I have nothing but good things to say about this place.
Al was a great host and made me feel right at home. The building was very modern and had all the mod-cons, which was a refreshing change from most of the other buildings in the area! The apartment is located in a cool area with lots of good bars and restaurants. It was everything that I was looking for.
My second time to New York, first time as a single female traveller and first time using AirBnB. Staying with Alan was great. I had the 'smaller' room (much larger than I expected) which had a bed as big and comfortable as my own at home, great view from big windows onto the street (very little traffic) lots of space for my luggage, and a desk and chair. When I arrived Alan spent time showing me around, how everything worked and the amazing view from the roof. He also introduced me to the other couple that were staying, also very friendly and a similar age to me. Sharing a bathroom was easy and convenient, and whilst I was out sightseeing most of the day, it was cool to sit and chat with the other guests or Alan in the evening.
The location is excellent with great bars, shops and restaurants that Alan recommended right on the doorstep, if you want to stay in New York with the locals, come and stay here. I had no problem walking around at night by myself either going to a restaurant or coming home late from the subway, and I felt safe all the time day or night. I would definitely recommend to friends and especially other single female travellers.
DIRTY, FILTHY, COCKROACH INFESTED APARTMENT - DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!
I’m afraid the roof top deck is the only good feature of this accommodation.
Overpriced considering the state of the living conditions.
We found Alan to be moody, lazy and unhelpful. He moaned constantly about how tough it is to be a host, and while we expected nothing from him in terms of tourist ideas, he fell short of providing the basics - a clean apartment. I emailed Alan a few times before our visit to enquire about things like providing towels and a hairdryer. One towel he gave us was in fact a dish cloth and there was no hairdryer for my wife to dry her hair. Alan expressed to us on numerous occasions if he could do anything for us, but when we did ask him for anything, nothing happened!! We ended up using another kind guests hairdryer for the rest of the stay, while for the first 3 days, my wife had to let her long hair dry naturally in the cold October weather.
We loved New York and the East Village is a great place to stay. We were so busy during the day that we spent very little time in the apartment but this was also definitely due to the fact that the apartment was so GRIM.
Despite the poor living conditions, we decided not to let it ruin our stay, but instead to pity Alan and his sorry state. Unfortunately though, on the last day when we were about to leave, Alan requested that we didn’t leave him a poor review! Alan was unavailable to ask him to do anything about cleaning the apartment when we were there as he didn’t get up until late in the day and was again in bed on our return home in the evenings - always with a strong smell of incense burning?! We then made it clear to him that the apartment was substandard in terms of hygiene. He eventually admitted to also seeing cockroaches in the apartment. The doors and walls are completely filthy, with dirty hand marks all over them, and the bin in the kitchen - I wouldn’t even touch it!
Alan sells himself as being a laid back kind of guy, but all he wants to do is take your money and drink cheap beers! He could give us no advice on local restaurants or bars, but instead asked us to bring him menus from places we’d been and asked us if he could join us on trips!!
I really hope that Alan has cleaned up his act since our visit and had just become “complacent” as he put it, but I would STRONGLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO EVEN GO THERE!!!
I stayed in Alan's during CMJ Festival 2010, it was GREAT because the place is sooo close to all of amazing venues like the Cake Shop, Piano's, Poisson Rouge etc. It's close to the subway, amazing restaurants and also cool clothing shops etc.
The doorman was always around even up to 2 in the morning. Last but not least Alan was very friendly and helpful.
Alan is a really great host! Very friendly & cool New Yorker.
I wanted this trip pretending as living here, even though it's a short stay - walking about the neighbors, visiting local restaurant and bar. East Village is the place whereyou can experience. And Alan's place is the heart of it. Really enjoyed. Will come back again! Thanks, Alan!!
This was our first stay through AirBnB, and we are now hooked! Being first-timers, we weren't sure of what to expect, but we are now sitting in our third AirBnB room and considering offering a room ourselves when we get home.
We stayed in Alan's bigger room, which had plenty of room for our luggage, shopping, and us. Alan is an truly easy-to-live-with guy, and we bonded over classic rock bands and NFL. He took the time to share drink with us, visit a few bars, etc, which helped personalise our stay. Alan's apartment is in a great area on the Lower-East Side of Manhattan, which makes exploring the city really easy.
We had really memorable time - thanks Alan!
Alan is a great host. He was always prompt in his replies when I had questions. He had good recommendations for local places to eat and things to do. The room was clean and functional. Personally, I loved the windows, though if you are a light sleeper, you may experience some difficulties sleeping on a Saturday night. However, if, like me, you sleep like a rock, you will have no problems. The bed is comfortable. Perfect place for a single traveler who "hates hotels" and loves the "Village" atmosphere. The roof deck is cool and the view is incredible. Exactly like the pictures. Day and evening doormen were helpful and hospitable and clearly beloved by the tenants.
I stayed in the larger room in Alan's apartment Sept 15-17 2010 - it was my first time using AirBnB. The room was quite spacious by Lower East Side/Alphabet City standards (even had a built-in closet), and had a very bright feel to it from the natural lighting and white walls. The bed was quite comfortable - felt great to sleep on after 2 very big days (and nights!) on the town. The rooftop, of course, was spectacular - I lucked out with clear skies, and relished the view while sipping my morning coffee.
The experience was quite an amazing one. I had to spend a day in my employer's head office downtown - going to and from work really made me feel as if I were seeing NYC through the eyes of a local. Definitely AirBnB's biggest value proposition IMO!
Lastly, Alan was a great host - very friendly, engaging, and accommodating. I arrived on a morning flight that had me in the city around 11am - checking in early was no problem at all. I enjoyed meeting with Alan, and chatting with him throughout my stay. He even helped me find an AirBnB space in SF!
I couldn't have asked for a better first-time AirBnB experience - I'd absolutely stay with Alan again the next time I'm in NYC.
When I was looking for a place to stay in NYC I had quite specific ideas on where I wanted to be. I wanted to be on Manhattan, away from midtown and somewhere cool and convenient, which wasn't a hotel. As I was travelling alone it also had to be safe. When I stumbled on Alan's place it fitted the bill perfectly. I had a great week staying at Alan's appartment. He is a friendly, relaxed host and my room was very comfortable. The view from the roof terrace is amazing! My first time in NYC was exactly what I had in mind when planning it. The East Village is a wonderful place to have as a base with all it's restaurants, bars and quirky shops. It's a hip and lively place with a creative vibe to it and it is very easy to get from there to anywhere in the city. I had a brilliant holiday and would definitely do it all over again.
From the first phone call Alan was friendly and very helpful. I drove to New York and when I called for directions, he went a step further and stayed on the phone with me giving me turn by turn directions making sure I didn't get lost. Alan was a great host, very friendly with a laid back attitude. He gave me all the privacy I needed but was there whenever I needed some tips on where to go or what places to stay away from. The building is clean and in a great location, from the lobby it's literally a 25 second walk to lots of local bars and restaurants. I have stayed at numerous places across the country and this was by far my favorite experience. Thank you for everything Alan, see you next time!
Had a great time on my stay at Al's in Alphabet City! The accommodations were excellent. The bed was great and my room had plenty of sunshine and fresh air, located in a fun neighborhood. Look forward to my next visit. Thanks
Needed a place to stay in the city on short notice and on a budget. This place worked out great. Alan was a great host. The place was quiet and comfortable. The neighborhood is one of the best in the city to explore and find great restaurants and shops.I would definitely recommend this place and I expect I will stay again.
I was able to book with Alan the afternoon I was going to stay which made things quick and easy. I was originally going to go for the air mattress, but no one took the room so I ended up in one at no extra cost. You really can't beat that deal. The apartment is new and modern and much nicer than any hotel that's going to run you probably twice what you'll pay here. Alan was a great host who was personable but respectful of space. I'm definitely keeping this place in mind for my next visit and you should too!
Superbly located in East Village, this is a place not to be missed if you love nightlife and diversity. There are plenty of quirky cafes, restaurants and galleries in the neighbourhood. Alan is a very friendly host who respects the privacy of his guests. His knowledge of the city not only helped me familiarise with Manhattan, but also appreciate various aspects of it. In addition, the apartment has a great view on the roof deck and a friendly doorman.
This location is unbeatable. The room is filled with sunlight thanks to one wall being windows. There's a doorman, a roof deck, of course Alan, who's great for local information about NYC, the neighborhood, and subways. He's hosted travelers in the past, and enjoys meeting new people. This is an excellent deal for the price. I hope you have a chance to meet Alan too!
