I have immediately apologized to my host about the oven incident. I felt very sorry to leave it on but it was a negligence mistake when you have 6~8 people in the kitchen all trying to help on cleaning before leaving.
Majority of my guests are first time US visitors, highly educated and respected professionals. I was supposed to take them out for dinner, but, due to my rental car delay, was only able to ask a friend to buy some ready made food and groceries for them to cook themselves. They're grateful for what's available with no complaints for anything is less.
I was surprised to read the comment from the host that my guests cleaned out the entire fridge. I contacted every single one of my guests to verify their behaviors during the stay. There was one stalk of rotten celery which was trashed by my guests. There were 3 yams, half bag of bacon and some butter were used during the cooking by one guest. She was under the impression that she could use the leftover ingredients from previous renters or the host. Personally, I would definitely stop her to do so had I been present. I wish I could get a list of items that she used with price on. I would happily send in a check to help them restock.
As far as comments on using every single pan and utensil, are the pans and utensils in the kitchen not supposed to be used? Even though it was a short stay, we did cook 2 simple meals, instant noodles and chicken broth soup for dinner, and oatmeal, bacon/ham and eggs for breakfast. In fact, the dishes weren’t nearly enough for my party of 12 people, several couples shared bowls/plates for their meals. The kitchen was spacious and clean but not very organized. We had to go through cabinets/drawers trying to find the right tools to cook and enough plates to serve. Even so, we used them and cleaned them and did our best to put them back in place.
Again I feel terrible for not noticing the oven was on during my final walk through. However, I don’t think me or my guests deserve such comments given by the host. I have been very responsible on contacting or replying to the host the entire time. If certain pans and utensils, or food in the fridge, are not to be touched by your renters, please make a clear note to your future guests. That will make both parties happy.
