The Historic ferry, Yankee, 1907, has earned her way to The American National Registry of Historic Places. Owned and operated by Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs, she is in grand hands! These two strong thinkers/leaders . . . are the iconic artists & founders of the decorative arts movement; MacKenzie-Childs, Ltd, as well as the subsequent unfurling of current works for: Victoria & Richard Emprise.
This spry 105 year old Ellis Island ferryboat is key to the majestic manifestation of Victoria & Richard's heartfelt impulsion to engender, restore, & enrich whatever enters their environ.
The enchanting, last floating memory of 19th ~ early 20th century cradle for our European forefathers, is buoyant with promise, . . . STILL! As those courageous immigrants forged and fortified America, Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs also work tirelessly to protect this precious vessel for posterity, whilst simultaneously, charting the next chapter in her ever unfurling historical voyage.
Under their direction and innovation, Yankee is recognized as a big elegant sculpture armature, with which they work in respectful dignity & grace. In her newest assignment, as host to travelers from round the world, she ushers them in, embracing them, and providing a most tender care as they softly rock . . . and ROLL into their own discovery New York City, the salient symbol of America . . . through her vision and Hudson Harbor vistas!
What are Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs like, as folks . . . as hosts?
They are more about letting a guest know them through their works, rather than through conversation. They are not bashful or self-conscious, but, rather, quiescent in their public demeanor. The mission statement of their very being is: TO BE! Indeed, they do just that.
Richard is of a gentle countenance, upright, and stoic. He works effortlessly, intelligently, and with a sort of linear grace in his every movement. He loves to tell a good story, when prodded and, sees into things from a reasonable, almost engineering angle . . . an artist with a scientists, pragmatism. What a combination!
Victoria is quick to smile . . . even giggle. However, she says of herself, when people tell her how easy she seems to be with acquaintances, "Well, not really . . . I think, I am actually a closet introvert!" But, her love overrides her . . . self, . . . and all who enter her realm are recognized ~ realized ~ big time!
Victoria & Richard are world traveled, and always learning, with childlike curiosity. Victoria is a swell cook, but doesn't dwell on it . . . like, she'll eat anything . . . not so precious with all the fears and trends of the times . . . ever changing! She is a 4-H'er at heart . . . with always raising animals, growing things, sewing, cooking, and fixing . . . from blow torch to carpenter's tools. Richard reads a lot of great books, and tells Victoria the stories . . . great to listen in on. He can fix & build whatever Victoria cannot, and seems to expresses more common sense than is allowed. His humility keeps great secrets.
They have had a blast with making Yankee Ferry work for them, as a studio / dwelling, vegetable farm and animal farm. Where ever one looks, there is a little smirk to jerk them out of old thought patterns and limited expectations.
If one thinks they might take home a little inspiration from their visit to Victoria & Richard MacKenzie-Childs' Yankee Ferry "voyage" into infinite possibilities . . .
why . . . they'd better bring a big basket!
