Elvira and Hugh were so welcoming. We felt instantly at home. They called ahead when we were on the road to see what time we were arriving and were there to greet us. The house is an enchanted place where I would be happy to stay and play all day. It was clean with beautiful art and windows. The whole place brings the outside indoors and the indoors outside. They gave us great tips on where to go in the area including Robert's market which provided us with cheap and delicious local food. Elvira also gave us fruit, bread, eggs, butter and everything we needed to cook at home. I look forward to staying here again. Thanks Elvira and Hugh!
Staying at the Avocado Tree House stands out as the highlight of our two week visit to the Big Island. Although it is only about a 10min drive from Pahoa you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere with a view of the ocean off in the distance. The “Reflection Room” was totally relaxing and was an excellent place for reading as it was filled with natural light and cool breezes. I also enjoyed the porch that sits off the kitchen as it was perfect for viewing the ocean in the morning with a cup of coffee in your hands while also watching the small lizards slowly crawl out of their hiding places as the sun starts to warm things up. Hugh and Elvira made us feel very welcome and were always available if we had any questions on where to go or what to bring. We very much appreciated the organic breakfast fixins and fresh fruit that they provided from their trees, my favourite being the “star apple” – very tasty! The location is ideal for visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo, Hamakua coast, and Mauna Kea as they are all less than a 2hr drive. Don’t miss the Saddle Road (Hwy 200) as it is a beautiful drive with 3-4 lanes - a welcome change from the narrow roads along the coast. The next time we visit the Big Island we plan on staying in one place – Avocado Tree House!
Great, remote location. You truly are in your own paradise.
Magical! The treehouse was immaculate and such a comfortable, cozy and inviting space. We loved all the different areas to lounge in, and had a hard time leaving the beautiful property. It has really great energy.
Elvira and Hugh were fantastic hosts-- easy to communicate with and very warm and welcoming in person. They were super gracious, and lent us watersports gear and gave us suggestions for things to see in the area. They also gave us complete privacy, while still being accessible on the property.
The location is just remote enough to feel like pure country, while still remaining convenient to town and sights. There is wifi but our phone signal was spotty.
The kitchen was well equipped enough to cook in. Elvira and Hugh left breakfast provisions and a fantastic fruit bowl filled with fruits from the property. Elvira also brought us banana bread and a delicious smoothie on different mornings.
The bed was comfortable with soft sheets, and there were plenty of towels. Everything was immaculate and fresh.
We had been looking at a few different places in the area and are so glad we chose the Tree House. We loved staying there and hope to return again!!
The avocado tree house brilliant place to stay for many reasons. Hugh and Elvira are super chilled out and lovely - they exude mahalo and are happy to help or leave you to your own devices.
Pahoa is a great place to visit and the avocado tree house is a unique place to stay (close to the tide pools and about a 40min drive to the volcano park). I would recommend having a car and would gladly stay there again!! It was really fun to be a child again and stay in the tree house. It was very thoughtfully built and arranged. Thank you Hugh and Elvira for sharing the treehouse. Mahalo! :)
Mango House is a real off the grid, middle of nowhere experience. The house is very comfortable, but was a little chilly while we were there due to the rain and 60s temps that week. I never expected to have to wear a thick shirt in bed on Hawaii! Elvira left some fantastic fruit for us and brought us the most amazing smoothly on our last morning. The noise from the birds and frogs is amazing.
We couldn't say enough positive comments about this place or the Hosts! The Avocado Tree House was a unique, fun place to stay in, and it was immaculately clean! The house was on acres of land with a view to the ocean. It is decorated with fun furnishings that are bright and cheery. It is an experience you don't want to pass up! We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere in a quiet rainforest but it's actually very close to Pahoa, Hilo and the ocean. There were various fruit trees and we had a blast tasting and picking fruit from trees we never ever knew existed, yum! The Hosts, Elvira and Hugh, were so accommodating in having the fridge stocked with organic breakfast items and a big bowl of fresh fruit from their trees. They even brought us a big bowl of hot homemade soup they had made because it was unusually cold that day. Elvira and Hugh gave us a tour of their acreage and it was fascinating to learn of all their produce they grow, they are hard working and industrious. You have got to stay here, the Avocado Tree House is soooooo cool!
My wife and I had a great time at the farm. The house was magical and Hugh and Elvie were great hosts, treating us like long lost friends. This was the experience we were looking for when we booked the Mango House after spending several days in touristy Kona. Plenty of places to explore along the coast when you are not relaxing on the farm. Highly recommend this rental!
What a cool space!! And a beautiful property full of all kinds of tropical fruit. Hugh and Elvira were absolutely wonderful. I look forward to returning one day. I highly recommend it.
It's closer to the ocean than we expected (scenic 10 min drive), and near a few beach parks, including the warm pool heated by the volcano. We stayed here 3 nights, but if we did it over again, we would have liked to stay here longer. This could even be a home base for exploring the eastern side of the island. Stay here, you'll be glad you did!
We had a tour of the Mango house by Hugh, who is gracious, charming and extremely likeable. There was a huge bowl of fresh Organic fruit on the table along with the fridge stocked with Organic eggs, creamer, butter, and english muffins. The Mango house is so comfortable, inviting and charming. It seemed just like home. Elvira kept the fruits and breakfast items well stocked. We found Elvira to be such a lovely, helpful sincere person. Elvira and Hugh were always available for questions, great insight and advice on local activities and locations to enjoy. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, we felt safe and comfortable all the time. It was sad to leave! We plan on a return vacation to the Mango house.
I work with an "adventure tours" company. We've been very happy to stay at Hugh and Elvira's place during our Big Island tours. The houses and orchard offer a more immersive experience of Hawaii than a hotel room, for the same price. The owners are friendly and generous, always surprising our tourists with extra treats, like special-made drinks, smoothies, and exotic fruit. And the location is perfectly in the middle of all the beauties of the Puna district. Highly recommend this place!
