John's home was spacious and could easily accommodate three guests. It was reasonably clean and well maintained. There's a (very friendly) cat who lives in the home, so be advised if any guests have allergies!
Our experience with Megan and her Airbnb was unsatisfactory from the start of our correspondence, but her home was in a great location for us and I pushed aside my reservations. The initial issues involved booking dates: she repeatedly changed availability days--even after we'd reserved the home-- from Friday/Saturday to Saturday/Sunday and back again. That should have been a red flag.
A family member had picked up the key in advance as Megan was going to be out of town when we arrived. When we opened the door upon our arrival, we were greeted with a pervasive cat pee smell. While the house was tidy, it was not clean. The lack of cleanliness was not simply a case of a few days of accumulated, undone cleaning. The windows appeared not to have been cleaned in years. There were old cob webs and spider webs in the corners. A musty, damp smell was coming up from the basement. The carpet on the stairways was stained and smelly, not to mentioned unvacuummed. One of the beds with a white comforter that was covered in cat hair and bits of (kitty litter?) grit. The inside of the refrigerator was not clean, etc, etc, etc. Between the smell and the overall lack of cleanliness, we felt we could not stay. As a result, we had to get a hotel room. When we called Megan, she was apologetic and said she would reimburse us, but she has not returned calls since. Her boyfriend subsequently sent an email simply disagreeing with our assessment and claiming we were too picky. At that price, he said, we shouldn't expect more.
Being an Airbnb host is not simply about having an easy income stream. There are responsibilities that come with it. We have stayed at many Airbnb’s but have never had such a poor experience. It’s almost enough to turn one off to Airbnb altogether. Given our experience, I think this location should not be an Airbnb site.
The reservation was canceled 4 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
