The room was very clean, bright and comfortable. Martina was not in much, but both her and her roommate (ex-husband) Majit were very welcoming; I enjoyed meeting them both! We had a couple very nice conversations about their creative projects and world travels. The apartment was within easily walkable distance to the train, so arriving was fairly convenient. The area, despite its more rough-around-the-edges veneer, has a nice neighborhood atmosphere with close-by restaurants, bars and cafes that my hosts were quick to point out. Majit and Martina invited me to a party that I unfortunately could not attend, but as a solo traveler, I appreciated the offer all the same. There was smoking in the house – as you will see in the posting description – but the odor does not reach the room and Majit was very respectful about it. For those of you with allergies, there is also a very charming cat.
Great place to stay. Didn't get to meet Martina but met her husband who's a great guy and was really accommodating. Only downside is a bit of a commute to Manhattan
I am very happy about my choice to stay at Martina's eventhough i didnt have the time to hang out with her, her husband was a very very cool guy, gave me a few tips like visiting the Harlem to see real NY history, share some opinions about the serius situation happening in my country (Venezuela) and life experiences.
The location is excelent, 6 mins to the nearest subway station, 20mins to downtown, quite neighborhood and the room was just like in the picture, nothing fancy but very warm with an extra heater she provided us and with the essentials if you only use the room to sleep and bath like us because we stayed outside doing all the tours of the city, also we could cook some quick breakfasts to save some money outside.
The only thing that might be a little unconfortable for some people is that Madjid smokes inside the place and the whole house smells like smoke. For those who smoke or buy some air freshener for the room, will be fine. Its a small thing totally acceptable if you know how to adapt.
Im more than pleased to stay with you guys and thank you very much for your kindness and help with that late check out.
If i go back to NYC, sure it'll be to your place.
I never actually met Martina, despite staying the apartment for two nights. Madjid was very nice. He welcomed us when we arrived close to 11 p.m., and gave us a nice tour of the place. The room was as pictured, and the bed was comfortable, and there was a small space heater in case we got cold. The directions for how to get the apartment are helpful and accurate. Their cat was very nice and pretty quiet.
And now for the less-good stuff. It was very smoky inside. Madjid seemed to smoke almost constantly while he was in the living room, and a fair amount of that smoke ended up infiltrating the guest bedroom. My husband is asthmatic so that was a problem for us. But the biggest issue for us was noise. Not so much Madjid and friends, who spoke quietly (although were hanging out in the living room until 3 a.m. and we could hear everything they were saying), but more the upstairs neighbors. The upstairs neighbors were loud and had a dog that often barked loudly at other dogs, which would prompt the ladies upstairs to yell "Shut up, dog!" which didn't really help the situation at all. Needless to say we did not get a lot of sleep.
So, if you're a rock-solid sleeper who doesn't mind cigarette smoke, this place is a nice place to spend a couple nights. If you're a light sleeper or have asthma, this isn't the place for you.
I stayed one night at Martina's for one night in New York recently. She's great! The room looks exactly like the picture, and her home is warm and inviting. The location is close to the Subway, and makes it easy for visitors to get to and from Manhattan. I would definitely stay here again! :)
Martina and Madjid are welcoming, warm, active, sweet and perfect hosts. They are really easygoing, helpful, creative and social. Willing to take you on adventures and were interested in our lives and we of course in theirs. My mother and i feel like we left family behind in New York. We had the freedom to use the whole house, which resulted in nice coffee's in the morning and sometimes a meal or drink at night. The bed is comfortable and the room is clean. The house feels like a place where people live so don't expect the four seasons hotel, but its nice and cosy. The neighbourhood feels safe because of social control. There are some dodgy buildings in the neighbourhood but we are used to that, living in Amsterdam. Its an up and coming neighbourhood where a lot of young people are living because, lets face it, Manhattan is not affordable for everyone. The walk to the supermarket and metro is +/- 8 minutes. The people in the neighbourhood were friendly. We absolutely loved staying with them and miss them already. We hope we will see them again. Brooklyn is the place to be and you can't find a better place then with Martina and Madjid. One tip: be social yourself it will enhance your experience of seeing the real New York, not just the tourist things and get to know these brilliant persons! Loved Loved loved the experience!! thank you
Wonderful experience. Madjid was very pleasant and friendly. The bed was comfy, good area
