A warm welcome, beautiful & comfortable living space... Jan & John were wonderful hosts , helpful when needed... a quiet retreat to relax and enjoy
Thank you. We enjoyed having you to stay with us and I'm slowly working my way through the list of websites and books!
Jan & John are really wonderful hosts! Welcoming and helpful, giving us advice about the bus system, transportation and the best spots to visit, provided us with everything we needed for a day at the beach (not only towels but mats and chairs) and helped us to get the very best table at the Fish-Pot Restaurant as they are well-known there (you should not miss to go to this excellent restaurant which is only a 5 minute walk away – good food and a georgeous location!).
The apartment has everything you need, it is spacious und nicely furnished – with a balcony to the beautiful tropical garden, where you can sit and relax as well. John gave us a lift to Speightstown a few times and brought us to the bus station the day we left. It was really a pleasure meeting the two and staying in their lovely house.
We really liked the north of Barbados as it is not as touristic as the south, calm and friendly and you can experience a more authentic bajan lifestyle. There is a really nice beach just 15 minutes walk from the apartment (Heywood Beach). To go to Speightstown – which is very cosy – it takes a bit longer (about 25-30 minutes) but you can catch a bus to go there.
We totally recommend this place!
Thank you Elke. It was a pleasure sharing our home with the two of you and we hope to see you again some time. We are so pleased that the Barbados bus system lived up to expectations!
We really enjoyed our entire stay at Jan & John's lovely place. We took them up on their offer to pick us up from the airport and we are so happy we did. The ride back to their place evolved into a little tour of their side of the island which helped us to get a sense of the west coast of Barbados and they generously helped us out by stopping en route to pick up grocery supplies for the self catering we planned on doing. This saved us so much hassle in the end. The place is exactly as shown in pictures and quite comfortable environs. There was a lime tree in the back yard and we were told to take them as we needed. Our mornings here were nice and peaceful, which we greatly appreciated. It was one of our first mornings when we were even visited by some green monkeys! We made use of the wifi available and found it fast and easy. I was worried beforehand that I would miss the presence of a couch, but in the end it wasn't an issue at all. There was nothing that we wanted that wasn't there, and frankly, if there was something we know we could have counted on Jan & John to provide it! This was also the first rental we did where the hosts were on site and it was a great experience. John & Jan are such wonderful, thoughtful and generous people. They do provide a binder filled with lots of advice and suggestions (which we did peruse) but it was really great getting some of the local knowledge and advice directly from them. This definitely improved our experience. We got the impression that our hosts would have provided us with as much solitude as we wanted, but honestly our frequent chats and our one night drinking wine with them became part of the trip highlights! We did not rent a car and found it relatively easy getting around with the local transit (and a few lifts here and there from our gracious hosts). Also, we most definitely had the best fish of our entire trip at the fish fry at Moontown just north of Bajan Blue. Go to Oistins for the experience but go to Moontown for the food! (and a more local experience). As long as you are not looking to be in the high tourist, busy, "happening" area of the island at all times, you will not be disappointed in your choice to stay here.
Thank you Robynn, we really enjoyed having you and Daniel stay here to celebrate your 10th anniversary. We are looking into the possibility of squeezing in a couch too!
Jan and John are the perfect hosts! Very kind and available for any need 24/7 ,they will recommend you the best spots to see around the island and will even organize for restaurants upon request and a peaceful relaxing sailing trip on a splendid catamaran that is real value for money!!! The falt is gorgeous and the whole house is a piece of paradise very well embellished. A big hug and thanks to Jan and John for the time spent together.
This was like no airbnb we have ever had! We intended to stay with jan and john for only five nights but ended up staying the remaining ten days of our holiday! Not just because of the location - peaceful, convenient - it was because jan and john were amongst the most wonderful people we've met!
They advised us on places to eat and were always spot on, john went out of his way to make sure we got a table at our favorite place on our last night and we spent many evenings chilling out with j&j and the lovely dogs / cats over a rum or ten...
I can't recommend this place enough. They built the house and you feel the care and love that's been put into it throughout. It's truly a piece of paradise.
We didn't hire a car so j&j either drove us around and joined us on an island tour, or we took the local buses up and down the coast which was super easy and cheap.
After a grueling Canadian winter, Jan and John were tropical angels who guided us to wonderful beaches, vendors, and restaurants around Speighstown, Barbados.
Against their advice, we took the local bus service from the airport to Speighstown. Take the taxi! Even better, if offered, please accept Jan and John’s ride. Do not be tempted to be frugal. After a long flight, an immediate and direct route to their wonderful home in paradise was much needed in order to start relaxing and enjoying this incredible locale.
Once you’ve dropped off your luggage and shed your winter shell, the bus system is an excellent way to get around the island. Bajans are friendly and very helpful. If you’re not sure where you’re going, you can trust Bajans to point you the right direction.
The photos of the suite do not do it justice. It’s simple and elegant. It’s quite accessible from the front gate. The kitchen will have everything you will need. The patio is wonderful and spacious for two people where you can bask in the late afternoon sun while sipping beer or rum punch. The bedroom has large wardrobe with plenty of room. The bed is comfortable. You can open two windows in the evening that can provide a cool cross-draft while you sleep. The big beauitful backyard has palm and coconut trees with a bird pool. Throughout the day you’ll see a variety of animals (birds, geckos, dogs, cats, and monkeys!). The yard also has variety of chairs, lawn-chairs, and tables. You will not need an alarm because you can trust the Caribbean Elaenias, Carib Grackles, and other various birds to chirp and cheer your morning rise.
Bajan Blue is located in a safe, quiet, well-lit neighbourhood. It’s close to a beach with a string of vendors, bars, and restaurants along the water. There’s an incredible local fish market (on Six Men’s) which we regretfully did not take advantage of.
Jan and John are courteous, charming, and quite welcoming. They did everything they could to make us feel comfortable and happy. For a pair of slightly timid Canadians, we could not ask for better hosts.
Thank you, Jan and John, for a delightful week. We hope to see you soon.

Bajan Blue is a real gem. It is set in the most peaceful location and yet only 5 minutes from the beach. The apartment is probably better than the photos show and had everything we needed and we spent many evenings sitting on the spacious terrace, overlooking the lovely garden, enjoying the warm air and the sounds of the tree frogs. The owners, Jan & John, who live on site, were charming and the most welcoming of hosts who went out of their way to make our holiday enjoyable. The apartment is very well equipped, even providing beach towels, mats, umbrella and snorkelling masks.
The apartment is just to the north of Speightstown in a less commercialised part of the island which we liked very much. The local sandy beach has some good snorkelling but we also visited several other west coast beaches by using the local bus services which are cheap and very enjoyable and easy to use. We only hired a car for 2 days when we visited the wilder east and north coasts of the island and some of the south coast beaches.
The Bajan people are wonderfully friendly and we always felt completely safe there.
We can highly recommend Bajan Blue and we would love to visit again in the future.
Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!
You search the perfect place for your dream holiday on Barbados? HERE is the place to stay at!
Wonderful host-couple, wonderful appartment, wonderful house, wonderful garden, wonderful animals!
Jan & John took care of us from the first mail contact to the end of your holiday in a very personal and convienient (website hidden). Peter has beautiful beaches (our favorite was Heywood's beach), Speightstown has everything you need: supermarket, restaurants (our favorite was Island Plates), shops, post-office plus the wonderful Gallery of Caribbean Art (an absolute MUST for any art lover - we took home two extraordinary pieces of art).
Moreover, there is a central bus station with busses that take you everywhere on the island for just 2 BBD ( we did many day trips and can recommand Andromeda Botanical Garden and Wildlife Reserve) - a very easy way to if you dont rent a car.
We enjoyed our stay at Jan & John so much that we already started to plan our next holiday at their perfect place...
Go here and we promise you will have the holiday of your life!
Thanks Jan & John,
Ines & Rikard
We decided to visit Barbados just one week in advance of going there. We initially looked into hotels, but given the hefty price tag of most places, we decided to look into apartments to rent.
Bajan Blue caught our attention immediately. Not to mention the very reasonable price per night!
From the very outset, John and Jan did everything they could to ensure our stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. From looking into car hire for us, to recommending where to eat on our first night, to asking what shopping essentials we would like bought in for our arrival. In addition, they kindly added a couple of other items to our fridge that they thought we may appreciate (who doesn't appreciate rum punch?!).
John drove us from and to the airport in his very comfortable car at a far more reasonable cost than local taxi's.
The photographs of Bajan Blue paint a lovely picture, but the reality surpasses the photos! It is just lovely. It is a beautiful, traditional Bajan home that we immediately felt at home in. The apartment has everything you need and more. The bedroom is extremely comfortable with lovely decor, air conditioning and a ceiling fan. There is ample storage space. The kitchen and living area has absolutely everything you need for self-catering, including store cupboard essentials.
The balcony area was our favourite. The garden is beautiful and we were lucky enough to spot a monkey, mongoose, hummingbirds and other wildlife as we relaxed and dined there. Sitting on the balcony of a morning was the perfect way to start our days!
In addition to all of the apartment's amenities, John and Jan provided us with beach mats, towels and cool bags - a great way to save on baggage space.
The location of Bajan Blue is fantastic. A stone's throw from a number of beautiful beaches and the fantastic restaurant The Fishpot which does an excellent and reasonable lunch menu. Nearby Speightstown has a large supermarket, quaint shops, an ATM and restaurants and bars. There is also nearby Moontown where you can eat cheaply and go to the local fish fry.
John and Jan were happy to tell us about and direct us to good, local places to eat and drink.
You can see the island by bus easily and cheaply and can catch the bus from very nearby the house. At his insistence, John often drove us to where we wanted to go - too kind!
If you are looking for beautiful, uncrowded beaches in an unpretentious, safe area and a taste of the real Barbados in beautiful surroundings, Bajan Blue is the right place for you. You will NOT find better value in Barbados!
Without the help of John and Jan, our Bajan experience would not have been half as great as it was. They were so helpful and friendly and we left Barbados with two new friends in our lives. It was a wonderful week that we will not forget!
I am writing this reference because my girlfriend and I stayed with Jan and John for 5 nights in Barbados but we unable to write a standard review in time... they only give you 2 weeks or something. Firstly, it's too bad they don't give more time. As for the review we wanted to leave it would be as follows:
From the moment John picked us up from the airport, we knew this was going to an amazing stay. Jan and John were so hospitable and went out of their way for us, either taking us to the bus stop or into town to go grocery shopping. They also provided us with valuable information regarding bus times, activities and things to do on our trip to Barbados. The apartment we stayed in at their place was fantastic. We had everything we needed there including a beautiful terrace and access to the backyard garden where we ate breakfast most mornings.
The only thing to note is that there aren't many places walking distance from the Bajan Blue which can be good or bad depending on what time of stay you are looking for. You will either need to rent a car or take the bus (there is a bus stop walking distance that will take you to most other areas on the island). However, renting a car at least for a couple days would likely be the best idea and save you time. The roads are definitely not for the faint of heart to drive on though but if you are used to driving on the left hand side, it won't be as bad. There is a great restaurant (The Fish Pot) that is walking distance from the house and they serve delicious food but it is a little bit on the pricey side. We went there a couple times when we didn't feel like taking the bus into one of the other towns. The beach right beside the restaurant is also very nice and it is usually very quiet as well!
Jan and John, thank you for everything and we can’t wait to visit Barbados again!
I could not have imagined the night we left that I would be in tears from the thought of never seeing Jan and John again. Jan and John were wonderful hosts, our experience from start to finish was very enjoyable. Their home is completely like the pictures, super clean, and their dedication to their guests’ happiness is exquisite. Jan and John were very knowledgeable about the area and extremely accommodating to our needs. They picked us up from the airport with open arms and big smiles and dropped us off with bigger hugs and inspirations. Any minor requests were addressed promptly and with a sense of ease. My favorite thing to do at their house in the early mornings was to sip coffee on their porch while taking in the homes beautiful landscape and Bajan air. The beaches were private and close. The Blue Bajan house is ideal for a romantic getaway, in which we very much had. We truly wish to return one day.
