Hi Paul - thanks for this review. I didn't hear from you that the water was not running until you had checked out and were driving home. I had the plumber there within an hour of you letting me know and he fixed the problem - which was related to the water filtration system - and it was ready and working fine for the next guests checking in right after you.
With respect to the heat, the cleaning people get wood stove running for when guests check in, however sometimes the timing doesn't work for when guests are arriving and the fire is long out. Added to this was the extreme cold temperatures that had set in during the past week or so. That said, I have room heaters to accelerate the warming up timing when the cabin has been unoccupied for many days.
Just a comment about the winterization - it's a log cabin, with new double glazed insulated windows, new extra insulated roof and spray foam insulated crawlspace. When you arrive there was a leak in the bathroom faucet, which had tripped the space heater off - an occurrence that had not happened in the past. The fire should have had the space warmed when you arrived - that too was not the case this time. Sudden cold snaps in the north sometimes put wrinkles in the operating plans!
That said - we have been renting this cabin, and using it as a family for 9 winters now. Thanks for getting in touch right away so we could sort out the leak!
Hello and thanks for the review Zoe. The full sized fridge works but we do not operate it in the winter since it is in an unheated shed anyways and it would be a waste of energy use. Guests store extra food in the shed during cooler months!
Hi all: for people not comfortable with wood stoves (they're like fireplaces but with front doors on them so they act as furnaces) we have detailed instructions at the cabin on how to start and keep the fire going. For people with no experience making fires, I suggest in my instructions bring some fire starter blocks (@ hardware, grocery stores). Isla Craig was one of three women guests and I suspect none of them have experience with fireplaces or wood stoves. This is the first time I have had this raised in the 8 years I have been renting this cabin.
