"Inwood-Manhattan's Best-kept secret"...ever!!! The apartment is very well situated (close to any conveniences). Tom and Jessica are very welcoming, thoughtful and they gave us good advice (Grimaldi's, the best pizzas are in Brooklyn!!!). Our trip in New York was just fantastic! Thank you guys for all!...We certainly will come back!
Armelle and Jean-michel (we love NYC!!!)
Awesome host! Accommodating, clean, great neighborhood!!
Would love to stay here again the next time I'm in town.
Tom and Jess are the most wonderful hosts! Not only do their sparkling personalities and warm reception make you feel totally at home, but they also provide many thoughtful details to make your stay more comfortable. They keep their guest room filled with extra towels, sheets, and travel size hair products! Even their cat, Chet, seems to be a bioengineered inn-cat from the future. Don't like cats? Great! Chet doesn't like you either. Love cats? Great! You'll feel amazing once you break through his tough outer shell and win his love.
Among the other amenities, I especially appreciated the sheet of information about Inwood, a neighborhood that is a mystery even to Manhattan residents. They've really done a great job picking out the gems for the benefit of their guests. Piper's Kilt (right across the street) is a serious contender for best burger in the city, and the nearby parks provide a truly unique New York experience. If you want the regular downtown stuff too, the A-train will get you there super-quick.
I'm totally sold on these guys, their place, and their grumpy muffin of a cat. Anytime I visit New York, I'm staying with them.
Tom and Jessica have been really hospitable and warm-hearted. My family felt well during their whole stay. One night we all met for dinner and enjoyed Toms great cooking. Delicious! The apartment was clean and they could help themselves in the kitchen. All in all there is nothing to complain. We can highly recommend Tom and Jessica!
My stay at Tom and Jessica's place was absolutely fantastic.
Inwood truly is a well kept secret on Manhattan island, and I loved the forest and park just up the road from the apartment. As others have said, the apartment is super easy to get to via the metro, which was very reliable and runs all night. If you're into climbing, and I really would encourage you to be, there is some good bouldering at Fort Tryon park nearby, worth a look.
The suburb itself is really fun. With a big Dominican contingent it's a great place to whip out some Spanish, or to get authentic South American cuisine. Also there are some great bars and restaurants right near the apartment that are well worth a look, especially after a hard day of doing whatever you're doing. On this, Tom and Jess provide a handy little guide of the local neighbourhood, so put your pencils down if you're taking notes.
The apartment itself was great, and had everything a weary traveler could want. As others have pointed out though, if you want a hotel-style room with a big bathroom, then perhaps either Arbnb is not for you, or you should be looking to pay more than you will be here.
The place is a great example of a NYC apartment, it's cosy, has character, and has a quirky and ecclectic style, thanks to Tom and Jess. If you're a good traveler, and up for an authentic experience, then you will have no issues whatsoever here, in fact, you'll love it.
Tom and Jess provide cold breakfast and nice coffee each morning, and a lot of the time I had the place all to myself. Well, almost. Chet the cat kept me company when Tom and Jess were out, and despite his apparent ambivalence toward me, I know that deep down he had nothing but like for me.
Tom and Jess are not only welcoming and wonderful hosts, they are also both terrific people. Many of my fondest memories from New York City either came from their recommendations, or from times that I spent with them.
If you're the type of traveler who wants space, and to do your own thing, Tom and Jess are more than happy to accommodate that. Or if you like hanging out a bit more, and need a bit more guidance, they're up for that too. It's really up to you.
For me, Tom and Jess, and their place, encapsulate what the Airbnb experience is all about, and I'l remember my time there very fondly.
Overall charming, convenient, a few minor negatives, and a word of caution. This is a cute eclectic and for the most part clean apartment with young friendly hosts. They provide a lot of awesome local area information in the room and in person. Definitely one of the highlights and best photo op of our stay was an outing recommended by Tom. There are some great eateries very near by and it is conveniently located at the last A line stop. Although the subway ride out to Inwood from other sites in Manhattan can be long (20-30 minutes to midtown) it is very easy to navigate back from anywhere in town. The bedroom is quite spacious with high ceilings and plenty of extra room to roll out a yoga mat or two. I also appreciated the closet with hangers and full length mirror.
A few downsides that might be important for some: the single shared bathroom is quite small and in need of a re-grout. If you are a person of size you may find the somewhat wobbly toilet difficult to maneuver in the very narrow space between the wall and tub. If you are fussy about cleanliness the crumbling grout in the shower and bathroom floor and the black mold in the tub's corners may tip your gross-out scales. The double bed was so-so, on the smallish firm side with 2 permanent grooves where bodies have laid and a beam down the middle you could feel through the mattress. Our room seemed always to be the hottest room in the house, although a well-placed fan did help with that. Given these issues I found it a little pricey (over $70/night which is the most I've paid for a room on Airbnb, but maybe you pay for location?)
Now for the cautionary tale: the place was burglarized while we were out sightseeing and the thieves targeted our room specifically. We arrived back on our last evening to find my husband's carry-on bag dumped out all over the floor and gone, his Zoom audio recorder, my Macbook Air, its charger, and my iPad, all stolen. Around $2800 in losses (not covered by Airbnb!) Despite a secured building, double bolts with separate keys on the front door, and bars on every window in sight, it turned out there was one unsecured (sans bars) window back in the host's bedroom that had been forced open. The thief passed through their bedroom and living room and did not touch any of their valuables or electronics which were in plain site, instead going straight to our room. Tom and Jessica were immediately available to help us deal with this. We discovered the theft at midnight and we were all up to at least 3am dealing with the cops and trying to figure out what happened. They were definitely appalled and sorry this happened. Despite the odd targeting of our room we are quite certain that the hosts were not knowingly involved in any way - some details about how it went down made this clear. Tom and Jessica have been extremely helpful and supportive: staying in contact with us since we left, helping us deal with Airbnb, helping us with finding resources to deal with stolen electronics, and refunding us for our entire stay. They were very on top of getting any security holes fixed, before we left they had already paid a locksmith to change the locks at midnight (this was before they discovered the window had been forced open) and were on the phone making arrangements with the building sup at 2am to add security bars to that last unsecured window. I'd say this was an isolated incident and the hosts handling of it was as mature and responsible as it could possibly be. If you stay here I would just verify with the hosts that they have added bars to *every* last window in the house, especially if you will be carrying valuables, and be smart and hide your valuables like you would in a hotel room.
A very pleasant stay there. If you make it to Hamburg, stay at our's!!
We only enjoed our first trip to N.Y. thanks to Tom & Jessica! Regards to Chet!

My parents stayed at Thomas and Jessica's apartment for several days and they loved their room and the general atmosphere of the apartment. Everything went very smooth and Thomas was very helpful with any question they had. He also tried to give addresses according to their taste which is always very considerate. They were really happy with their stay in New York and the place where they stayed, in this case this lovely apartment, was a big part of it.
They even provided us with a printout of places to go/things to do in the area.
He was very accomdating to our scheduling needs.
We would definitely stay there again.
Tom and Jessica were perfect hosts, though our schedules kept us from seeing much of each other. Their place is incredibly convenient, literally steps from the subway. Inwood is a great neighborhood. Quiet, but with a lot of restaurants nearby. The room is comfortable and very quiet.
Tom and Jessica are lovely people who we were happy to share our home with. They were friendly and considerate and we would welcome them back anytime!
Polite and good guest.
Thomas and Jessica were great guests. They asked what they could do
before their 4am departure ! They were interested in exploring Santa Fe
and were very easy to communicate with . Even though they were in town for a wedding and had to do lots of events they managed to leave my place in wonderful condition.I would welcome them as guests anytime.
Thomas and his family were extremely generous, respectful and clean. It was a great pleasure to have them stay at our place. Thomas is also very polite and easy to communicate with.
Highly recommended! A+++
I love these guys! Tom brought me a cheesecake from NY! It was really fun having them around. They're great travellers, curious about thier surroundings, out and involved. Quite able to entertain themselves but great company when they're around. I want to go and stay in thier place next time I go to NY!
Tom and Jess are two of my closest friends in the world.
Their neighborhood is a hidden, quiet, safe gem in northern manhattan. Their apartment is beautiful and was written about in the New York Times. They are fantastically hospitable.
Tom And Jessica are the best hosts in the world. My girlfriend and I were beginning out trip up through New England and so we thought... what a better place than Manhattan. Their place was really clean and they gave us tons of useful advice. For the money you can't beat it. The train is so quick to put you right in the middle of everything... so bottom line completely awesome people, great price and great location. I hope you get experience this place like we did!
We had a great stay with Tom and Jess - both are extremely accommodating and engaging people. They recommended some great places to eat nearby, but also had a good sense of what was happening in the city at large. The apartment was clean with all the essentials and the front door is mere steps to the subway line. Another added feature was the easy car access from the north.
You have the city, privacy, community and greenery all nearby at a great price!
