We stayed at Porto Kalyves for a week in June. And it appeared to be a perfect choice, as we were looking for a place that would be quiet and not crowded and at the same time within a short drive from cities and places of interest, and Kalyves was just it. Having a car is highly recommended, as then you are free to travel wherever you want and see more. We explored the whole western part of Crete, beaches there are just lovely!
As for the apartment iteself, it has a well-eqiupped kitchen, nice bathroom,
2 balconies, one with a see view and one with a garden-view. The only drawback was that it is very close to the road. However, it does not bother you so much.
The most important thing for us is people! Both George and Ioanna are extremely nice and outgoing. Maria, her son and the gentlemen who works with her there are very friendly and kind. Whatever you need help with - they will do this and even more.
The heartiness of the hosts is what makes this place special :-)
As for the surroundings: there is a big supermarket nearby, 2 nice beaches within a walking distance, few little shops and wonderful cosy family-tavernas with good food. We've been to different parts of Crete and can definitely say that one of the best tavernas we had dinner at is in Kalyves.
So, if you want to visit the Western part of Crete, this place is highly recommended!
We had a wonderful stay at Porto Kalives!
The apartment has a perfect size for two persons and is cosy and very clean.
The location is superb! It's close to a big supermarket, a sandy beach and within a short walk to the center of Kalives, with a lot of restaurants and small shops. There's a small road in front of the apartments that can be a little noisy, but it's not that big of a problem. The bedroom is located in the back of the apartment, where you cannot hear any road noise at all.
It's very easy and cheap to get to Chania from Porto Kalives, there's a bus stop next to the supermarket, where you will get to Chania in 25min for only 2,80€.
George was very friendly and helped us with everything we needed during our stay.
We therefore highly recommend to stay at Porto Kalives!
We had a wonderful stay at Porto Kalyves. We took the bus from Heraklion and the bus stop for Kalyves is on the side of the highway. George was nice enough to pick us up even though our ferry was delayed and it was quite late. He showed us to our room and it was lovely. There were two balconies. One is in the back and has a clothes line, handy for drying your towels and bathing suit. The other balcony overlooks the sea and was perfect for enjoying our breakfast every morning. George generously provided us with provisions like fresh fruit, bottled water, coffee, crackers, jam, etc.... The place itself was very clean, charming and comfortable. As for Kalyves, it is a small beach town conveniently located between Rethimno and Hania, two old cities you must visit in Crete. I highly recommend renting a car. It's not expensive and very convenient since Crete is large, worth exploring all over and the busses have weird stops on the side of the highway. Also, there is a reef right across from the apartments so bring snorkeling gear. Overall we had an amazing stay and George was very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend staying here.
