My fiance and I had such an incredible weekend at the Abalone cottage. Mike and Laura were easy to communicate with and quick to respond. Mike was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us around the cottage and made himself available to answer any questions or concerns that arose. The kitchen was stocked with all the necessary furnishings to cook meals on our own and they supplied us with coffee, tea, milk, some yogurt and granola (even a couple beers). It was cozy and clean and perfect for us. They have an idyllic spot. We got to bring our dog and there were some nice trails they've created and maintained in the woods. Their home(s) were clearly built with love and attention to detail. I would love to go back!!
Laura and Mike were just great! they were so welcoming and eventhough we came in late on the first night, Mike set us up with all the information we needed to get us through to the next day. The cabin itself was spacious and just the right size to play house in for a weekend. And what a house! situated atop a literal mountain, there were nothing but amazing views the whole weekend. Mike even gave some great suggestions on local attractions before we left. Would stay here again in a heartbeat
What a fabulous cottage!
Mike was in town and greeted us upon arrival, showing us around and getting us settled. He was friendly and a great host; we were staying for a quiet weekend in and despite proximity to the main house, we felt like we had plenty of privacy and quiet (and often forget anything else was around us).
The accommodations are comfortable and cozy, providing everything we needed for dinner and relaxation near the fire.
The location is superb, located within striking distance of various points of interest, including a state park with beautiful redwoods just down the road. The coastal city of Elk sits near the cliffs above the ocean and has everything you need to have a mellow evening in the woods.
Would absolutely stay again! Thanks Mike!
Incredible location!!! We didn't get the chance to meet Laura, but Mike was great. Very hospitable and helped with any questions we had. It is so kind of them to share their slice of paradise with the Airbnb community.
The cottage is a little bit close to the house, but we honestly felt as if we were in our own world thanks to the amazing views.
Excellent place to call home base while exploring Mendocino county. Can't wait to come back!
We spent an amazing weekend at the Abalone cottage! It started raining pretty hard on Friday night and continued through for most of Saturday, but the cottage was absolutely perfect for relaxing and enjoying the rain from the comfort of a wood fire! Mike was a wonderful and helpful host. We'll be back again for sure. Thanks for everything!
My stay in the Abalone Cottage was absolutely perfect. Getting there is a bit of a trek, of course, but Laura and Mike provided wonderful turn-by-turn directions and Mike greeted me on arrival to show me around. The cottage is adorable - well-decorated, warm, cozy and comfortable. The scenery is wonderful, too; I think I watched the sunset every night from the patio. You're really in the wilderness; I got to see deer, chipmunks, etc. during my stay. But about 30 minutes away there are also cute wineries and local shops.
I didn't get the chance to meet Laura in person, but she was extremely prompt and helpful in preparing for my trip. Mike was awesome during my stay - he showed me the walking trails, let me feed the koi fish, and always made sure I was comfortable and that I had everything I needed.
Great little cottage, awesome hosts, wonderful way to unwind.
Mike greeted us as we drove up the road to the cottage, stopping his refurbishing work on raised vegetable beds to show us around site.
The cottage suited us just fine as the property is tucked about equal distance between Highway 128 and Highway 1. Unless you want to drive the 8 miles to Elk or further up Highway 1 to Albion, Little River or Mendocino, you might want to bring food for cooking. Everything you need to prepare simple meals is here.
Don't miss the sunsets on the deck. Good signal for Verizon users also.
Wonderful, peaceful location. Off the beaten track, but directions were good and the drive was a nice break from the LA traffic. A great place to drop out for a few days. Mike was very friendly and available for questions, but everything in the house was fine and we had all we needed.
My stay at Abalone Cottage was perfect! The cottage is beautiful, lovingly hand-crafted and well-cared for - and exactly how it looks in the pictures. Gorgeous views, quiet and relaxing, burbling koi pond right outside! And, it's close to the coast and all sorts of towns and beaches to explore. The bed and sofa are super comfortable, and the kitchen has everything you need to make a great meal and then eat it outside amongst the redwoods.
Mike and Laura make sure you feel right at home - fresh coffee beans and greek yogurt in the fridge, all sorts of local maps and information on the desk and even a bottled water and hershey kiss on the nightstand. Mike greeted me as soon as I arrived, showed me around the space and made sure I felt welcome. Throughout my stay, he was always available, genuine, gracious and friendly - sharing tips on where I might ride my back, showing me a trail I could hike on the property and sharing stories about the area.
I could not have asked for a better weekend away - or a better host - and I will certainly be back! I could not recommend Abalone Cottage more!
On our drive to the cottage we saw all kinds of wild life including deer, turkeys and farm animals. Abalone cottage was a cozy retreat in the woods of Elk with a great view and a nice koi pond. Mike and Laura where very kind and brought us a couple of glasses of wine to help us wind down after driving ten hours to their place. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook fresh fish and abalone which we harvested during our stay. The cottage held in heat very well, when the temperature dropped at night and the sheets where very comfortable, however, the bed was very hard.
It was great having Mike and Laura here for a few days! Hope they can return soon...
Sorry not to meet this nice couple, from the first e mail i noticed they are lovely, communication was nice and easy and they left the studio in perfect order.
