Having used AirBNB for years with phenomenal success, dealing with Karen is the one instance where a horrible host soured the experience... Upon arriving at Karens apartment, we found that the place had not been cleaned prior to our arrival, or set up of our visit. There was no paper towels or toilet paper, and the floors were messy. Karen was out of the country, and not available to help, so we took care of those issues. When we checked-out, she had no one set up come to clean the place before her next guests arrived, and gave us grief for not washing the towels, changing the sheets, and generally deep cleaning the apartment for the next guest. After paying $50 for a cleaning fee and not agreeing to anything of the sort prior to our arrival, that was certainly not our expectation. When the next guest arrived to find dirty towels and sheets and the place not cleaned, they did not stay there and Karen tried to get AirBNB to charge us for that. She of course got nowhere with this course of action, as she was in clear violation of AirBNB hosting standards, and general common sense rules for hosting guests. In response to her specific accusations : 1). We were not aware that we needed to take out the trash, and assumed that whoever came to clean would do so. We just put all the trash in the bin. 2). I do not pay $50 cleaning fees to have to wash and replace linens and towels upon my departure. This was not in the house rules, and she ordered me to do this only when we were about to check out. 3) The food in the fridge was there when we arrived, as the place was not cleaned before we got there. We left an empty Gatorade bottle on the counter, which is a "variety of trash". 4) All dishes were clean and drying in the sink. 5). Apparently a vitamin was on the floor. That was the level of that our "uncleanliness" degraded to, and a specific complaint...a vitamin on the floor.
This is a case where we paid $50 for cleaning before we arrive and after we depart. Neither occurred and she didn't have anyone come to clean the place or set it up for the next guest, and expecting me to do this was ridiculous, especially with no agreement to do so prior to our arrival. I would have even done this, and washed the towels and linens, and set the place up for the next guest, if she had refunded my cleaning fee. She is bitter about the next guests not staying there (I certainly don't blame them), and decided to exaggerate and create an issue and discredit us. Shameful hosting, but fortunately an outsider in the AirBNB community of wonderful hosts.
