A year ago, I turned 30. Part of that milestone meant answering the most difficult existential challenge that plagued me: Who am I without my job?

I quit my job just before my birthday. I loved my team, my role and my clients, but I needed to figure out who I was without them. My last Friday, I partied hard with my ex-colleagues-now-friends. Saturday was spent in bed. Sunday was spent on the sofa. On Monday, I woke up in a panic. What was I suppose to do, since I wasn't squeezing on the train, punching the keyboard or attending meetings that made me feel important? I did what my job had trained me to do. I looked at my to-do list, which contained 40 Things to Do Before I'm 40. With eyes closed, I pointed at a random item - "See Mount Everest". Four days later, I was on a plane to Nepal, where I began a 3.5 month journey which spanned 19 countries, 50+ flights and train rides and two anxious parents.

Many people ask me "How did you dare travel alone?"
Truth be told, I was never quite alone. Out of the 100+ days I traveled, I was by myself perhaps for only 10 days. When word got out that I was living out of a backpack, friends messaged me to introduce locals in the places I was going to or invited themselves for a leg of my journey. I made new friends whilst sitting by a canal in Amsterdam, trying not to vomit on a rickety bus journey to Pokhara and whilst attacking a massive bratwurst in Munich.

Whilst my soul-searching trip around the world has ended, my journey in uncovering corners of human relationships and life's adventures has not. Maybe you are one of the stardust specks that I will cross paths with, in your home, on your turf, in our lifetime.
