A sanctuary for strays is a wonderful treat for those who love animals, art, music and nature. One is greeted by pure love pups, Milo, his teddy bear, & Zoe, into Ketzel's beautiful & super comfortable home, full of wonderful art pieces & a piano! The attic room, is golden & full of colorfully painted furniture. It is spacious - good for practicing yoga or for a good boogie down, for reading or computer work - and yet it is very cozy when the temperature drops to 27 degrees! It also has an extensive collection of book about plants, trees & gardening! The lovely art & plant garden, that surrounds the house, with it's peaceful chimes & trickling water, is perfect for meditation. It is located within walking distance to gardens, cafes, restaurants, bars & shops. And Ketzel herself, she is an itty bitty woman with a huge presence and a most gracious spirit.
Ketzel greeted us with her 2 friendly dogs upon our arrival. She provided information on driving, restaurants, and things to do and see while in the area. The address was easy to find and convenient to all areas of Portland. Kettle was extremely friendly and willing to talk with us and answer any questions and I would definitely recommend staying at her beautiful and eclectic home!
Ketzel's Garden Sanctuary is truly stunning. From the flow of water trickles to the smell of all the greenery, this hidden treasure is an oasis of solitude (or feels so). It's close to great eateries, pubs and public transport. Ketzel is very accommodating, easy going and full of trust. Her two dogs are friendly beasts looking for pets, rubs and love to show off their many stuffed toys. The rented room is upstairs in the main house and has a sink and toilet and bed. The floor plan is wide-open and spacious, wooded floors with throw carpets, and skylights for natural lighting. The place was spotless clean to boot. We wish we had more time to stay there, but alas, we had to head back to the real world. We will be back soon, promise. Highly recommend.
My daughter and I had a wonderful stay at Ketzel's lovely home! It was one of the very best airbnb experiences to date. She was warm and welcoming. The actual space upstairs was perfectly divine, complete with a very comfortable bed, private toilet and sink area. Expect a home full of beautiful artistic touches, ambiance extraordinaire. It was very clean and comfortable, books galore, and two loving dogs to greet you. Ketzel is friendly and resourceful if you need recommendations to enhance your Portland experience. We loved you, your dogs and your home!!! Thanks for everything!!
It's hard to begin to describe Ketzel's Sanctuary without feeling overwhelmed by superlatives - the house and garden comprise a collection of divine and curious spaces, a blend of zany and meticulously refined. Just the gardens alone indicate her love of rebellious order, of juxtaposed textures, colors and patterns. Her inventive plantings are complemented by the elements of moving water and the playful but gentle presence of her furry companions. All is aesthetically cozy while visually dazzling, and what's truly wonderful is that Ketzel herself is at the core of this creation; we were lucky to have the chance to meet and interact with her on the morning after our one night's stay.
I highly recommend the Sanctuary, particularly for those who want a sense of home and a place of retreat while visiting Portland. I can understand why visitors from out of state or beyond are so charmed... Ketzel warmly engages her guests without crowding them. I was only sorry that we had but a single night and would have loved to spend more time easing into the outdoor spaces, identifying the plants and trees, and exploring the neighborhood amenities (not the least of which is the historic public library just across North Killingsworth, arguably one of the most striking of Oregon's surviving and operating Carnegie libraries). And as a retired library person, I adored the book collections throughout the house!
The stairs are steep, so older guests may want to take note... we are in our 60s and did fine with the climb, but we were relieved that we could leave our heaviest luggage downstairs. The spacious upstairs sleeping space has been improved with large skylights in addition to the lovely original windows, and in this separate space, one finds again the pleasing outcome of good taste and imagination.
I extended my stay an extra night because the space was so gorgeous! Thanks for hosting me. Loved hanging out with the dogs!
A beautiful space. Ketzel has done a great job with the garden and the room. I loved being surrounded by her art & sense of color! The location is slightly inconvenient (about 30-40 min to downtown by bus) but there are great areas within walking distance - Alberta Arts or Mississippi are both a mile away, the rose park is beautiful, and Sweedeedee is great for brunch. Loved all the trees & gardens in this neighborhood. The dogs are wonderful & rejuvenating. Take Milo for a walk, and be sure not to leave your Voodoo donuts on any low counters or Zoe will get to them! I was sad not to meet Ketzel - judging from her home, she seems like a fascinating & lovely person.
Jennifer, I am so sorry you felt put upon during your stay here. That was entirely due to my being out of town. Next time you're planning a trip to PDX, give me a heads up, and I will vow to protect your privacy and peace of mind!
Keztel gave me the most wonderful introduction to the US. She is welcoming, friendly and knowledgeble on her local area and gave me lots of helpful tips about public transport, cafes and restaurants and things to see in my 2 days in Portland. Her home is clean and comfortable and her dogs are delightful and well behaved. Her garden is a little Eden. Sean looked after me on the last evening and he was also a fantastic host. Highly recommmend staying with Keztel.
Kentzel is a very nice person and her house is awesome! Very cozzy and cute :) And also, she made it clear that we should feel as in our home - very free.
In the second day that we were there, she left the house to travel, but she asked a friend to take care of the house and the dogs and everything worked very well - her friend is as good as her :)
The dogs are great also!
The area around is very nice and you can get great places very close.
We would be there again for sure!
Thank you Kentzel!! When you come to Florida, you have a house to be also :)
All the best!
We had a wonderful stay in Ketzel's place. Ketzel is very nice and it was very easy to talk with her. She was also very helpful and give us some great directives to visit the city. Her house is amazing, very well decorated, an artist's soul for sure! Our bedroom was warm and comfortable, very clean as the bathroom. We wish we could stay longer! Not forgetting to mention her two cute dogs! We were sad to leave! Her place is located closed to the best part of the city, Mississippi avenue, Williams avenue where you have to absolutely go to Philippe's bread, a real french bakery! And also Alberta street, so many cute stores and great restaurants, try Tin Shed for every meal, their food is so good! Next time we go to Portland we will stay here again.
If you get the chance to chat with Ketzel (whether she's your guest or you're hers), take it. She's passionate, articulate, curious, interesting. She left everything in good order here, so of course she's welcome back any time!
Is just great that Ketzel could come and with her two marvelous dogs and make herself at home. We just enjoy them very much and look forward to the next visit.
What a wonderful group these three are! Letzel and her two wonderful dogs fit in just great! Very happy they will stop by here on the return trip. I highly recommend them as guests.
Ketzel and Milo were fun to have around the house. Milo showed lots of playful enthusiasm and our 2 dogs had fun chasing balls with him. Ketzel approaches life with joy and humor taking things as they come with a positive attitude. Whether you are looking to host her or stay at her listing you'll find pleasure in meeting her.
