We made two reservations separated by a couple days. Check out our earlier comments. It's THE place to stay for us. If North Portland is where you want or need to be don't look any further. It was close to our son's home, close to many fun and nifty places. Ketzel is a special hostess and her canine compatriots were a delight.
We had high expectations based on the photos and description of the Garden Sanctuary Home For Strays and our expectations were delightfully exceeded. Unexpected was the whimsical and visual spectacle of modern and folk art throughout the house. The location is superb for walking to Sweedeedee's for breakfast or lunch, to New Season's for groceries and to Peninsula Park for an amazing rose garden or family fun and picnic location. Get over to Kenton for lunch or dinner at The Cultured Caveman. We are NOT dog people and we fell in love with Milo and Zoe, gentle canine souls. Oh yeah, then there is Ketzel, a warm, engaging, empathetic woman who has been blessed with the spiritual gift of hospitality, honed to perfection with practice and experience. And that bed! That's the most comfortable bed we have ever enjoyed away from home. On subsequent visits to Portland, we will always stay with Ketzel, Milo & Zoe. After our four day stay, Milo, who had never come up the stairs into our space, stopped in while we were packing for a minute just to say goodbye.
It's a 5 Star++ experience! Book as far in advance as you can.
I went to Ketzel's garden sanctuary as a stranger and came out as a friend. Warm and welcoming, it was easy to be comfortable in her unique and beautiful home with the award winning gardens beckoning relaxation. The spacious upstairs bedroom was a quiet haven after a busy day.
Public transportation was close by, along with a walk to small market stocked with organic products. And, I can't overlook the library across the street where I could retreat and read the daily WSJ, NY Times and Oregonian newspapers.
Thank you, Ketzel. I'll be back soon.
Awesome stay! Ketzel was welcoming ,generous and helpful. Will be back.
That was pleasure to stay with Ketzel, the Home is full of love and flowers. Garden for me was calm place to think and create, some great idea was born there.
My husband and I had a perfect vacation at the Garden Sanctuary Home For Strays!! Ketzel, Milo and Zoe are incredible hosts! We loved the neighborhood, especially Saraveza's and SweeDeeDee's ;-) and the 7 minute walk to the train station. The room provided a relaxing and spacious place to relax after our long days exploring. It felt like our own apartment. I highly recommend this oasis!!
We had a great stay with Ketzel at her charming home in Portland in May. She was very welcoming and helped us with all of our questions on where to go, where to eat and where to shop. She opened her home and garden to us which was wonderful. Her neighbourhood was great with lots of good restaurants and cafes close by. The accomodation was very spacious and clean. I would totally recommend her place for anyone coming to explore Portland for a few days. Enjoy!
We stayed with Ketzel for 2 nights, and wished we had stayed longer! She warmly welcomed us into her beautiful home, and we got a lot of attention from her sweet dogs Milo and Zoe Mae. She was very personable, and helped us navigate the city with some great recommendations. She was incredibly accommodating, making sure we had access to everything we needed, and the room itself was large and private. The house was close to a variety of food and shops, but felt like a private oasis that we could relax in. Ketzel was the perfect host, and has set the bar high for anywhere else we will be staying. If we are ever back in the area, we definitely know where we will be staying!
I can hardly believe how welcoming and genuine Ketzel was. Her home is beautiful as well as her sweet adult puppies! The location was perfect and filled with such great people. The people living in my current town are not nearly as open minded and genuine as Ketzel and the friends she introduced me to. I had an awesome first experience of Portland. I definitely see myself coming back, hopefully sooner rather than later.
My husband and I had such a wonderful stay at Garden Sanctuary Home for strays! The room was spacious and offered a great degree of privacy, yet Ketzel made her own living space available to us as well. This made us feel right at home and as though we were just visiting a friend in Portland! The home itself is very cheery, with interesting artwork and calming gardens. Also, Ketzel was the perfect hostess, thinking of even the smallest of niceties such as flowers fresh from her garden in our upstairs space, to offering suggestions for interesting things to do in the area and relaxing pet therapy over a cup of tea with her two sweet canines! The location is very convenient to Alberta Street which has numerous interesting shops and restaurants. We highly recommend the Tin Shed for breakfast and honey lavender ice cream from the Salt & Straw. The old downtown area is also easily accessible, and who could resist a visit to Powells Bookstore? I am so glad we decided to stay more than one night; one is just not enough to take in the area. At this point in our road trip, we were really grateful for the warm hospitality. We couldn't have enjoyed our stay more, and look forward to visiting again!
If you get the chance to chat with Ketzel (whether she's your guest or you're hers), take it. She's passionate, articulate, curious, interesting. She left everything in good order here, so of course she's welcome back any time!
Is just great that Ketzel could come and with her two marvelous dogs and make herself at home. We just enjoy them very much and look forward to the next visit.
What a wonderful group these three are! Letzel and her two wonderful dogs fit in just great! Very happy they will stop by here on the return trip. I highly recommend them as guests.
Ketzel and Milo were fun to have around the house. Milo showed lots of playful enthusiasm and our 2 dogs had fun chasing balls with him. Ketzel approaches life with joy and humor taking things as they come with a positive attitude. Whether you are looking to host her or stay at her listing you'll find pleasure in meeting her.
