Habite en France
We enjoyed several weeks at Annick's condo during January 2014 and found the property to be as expected and very comfortable for us. The views every morning looking toward Marigot and the undulating hills behind the city were always a great way to start the day. We never tired of the ever changing light and cloud formations.
The condo is located in a gated community. There are security gates which can be closed over the extensive floor to ceiling doors and windows which lead to the deck and beach. We noted most people did use them and so we did the same, although we were never aware of any security issue. They would be invaluable during the hurricane season.
From the condo we could walk across the beach to the ocean in about one minute, although the sea urchins prevent bathing at this spot. 200 yds further along the beach the sand is wonderful and swimming is not a problem, There is a pool just a few feet from the condo which for the most part was lightly used. A wonderful facility to have so nearby to complement the ocean.
There are several local restaurants and car rentals all within easy walking distance. We particularly enjoyed the local Boulangerie and our daily baguette was a real treat. Sand and Dreams both recommended. We enjoyed the Sunday afternoon music at Sand.
Mary picked us up at the airport, with friend Danielle who helped with the translating. Mary lived in the complex nearby, and it was nice to have a nearby contact, although we really didn't need anything after we had settled in. Mary was delightful and charming and even talked of learning to speak English, although we should work on our French too.
We did a few local excursions and we though Grand Case was well worth the visit and recommend the Trigger fish at Calmos café.
Annicks place is really good. It's just like the pictures. Her friend Mary picked us up at the airport and showed us the good beaches and restaurants. She does not speak any English which sometimes was a bit hard.
The apartment was really good and has everything you needed to cook food. A bakery and a grocery store within minutes of walking.
We rented a car to go to better beaches and we recommend Mullet Bay on the Dutch side. We never stayed at the beach by the apartment since there were a lot of sea urchins in the water and therefore hard to get into the water. However there was a nice pool right next to the apartment.
We would advise everyone to rent a car for the visit. There is a private parking right next to the apartment and it does not take long to go to other beaches and villages.
The only problem we had was when we were leaving. Mary was suppose to come by and take the keys and check the apartment.
She never showed up and since we didn't have any contact information to her we had to leave the keys with the guard
By the entrance to the beach club.
Maybe there was a misunderstanding with the French but other than that I recommend you to rent her place.
A refaire!
Annick's apartment is fantastic. It is in a members-only beach club, which has a bakery, gas station (with mini mart), and 3 great restaurants within walking distance (less than 10 mins away). One of the restaurants does a very good and very popular buffet every Saturday evening.
We were picked by from the airport by Mary, who is absolutely wonderful. She looked after us, told us everywhere to go and then let us rent her car for the duration of the trip. She also drove us back to the airport for our departure.
The apartment is as detailed in the pictures: a bedroom, a bathroom and an open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area. A sliding glass door separates the open plan area from the outside (covered) porch (with another dining table) and metal shutters open out onto the veranda with the lounge chair. An AC unit is in the bedroom and the open plan area. Views from the veranda are superb - you really are 50m from the ocean! If you don't feel like going out, the apt is perfect for cooking, and has two BBQs (might have trouble lighting them if it's windy). The flatscreen TV accepts HDMI input, which is useful as there is only one English channel (CNN News) and no DVD player. The apt also has wifi (and wired internet - bring a cable). Everything was spotless and very clean.
The ocean is infested with sea urchins! Being water shoes or go to the neighbouring beaches if you want to swim/snorkel. The pool (no salt, or sea urchins) is very refreshing, and was almost always empty despite being shared with the other residents. Nearby you can also rent jetskis and do watersport activities, but we didn't try these out.
You will probably need a car if you want to go to the nearest supermarket, or explore the island and visit the towns of Marigot and Phillipsburg. The island is really small - we drove around it in under an hour.
We went during the start of the low season (mid June), so our stay was perhaps more humid and less sunny. There are far fewer people on the island, and many places are closed. Phillipsburg only really wakes up when there is a cruise ship in town. You will need to check when restaurants are open to avoid disappointment. - some only open Thurs-Sun in the low season. Supermarkets are open every day however.
I can totally recommend Annick's apartment. If you want a lazy beach holiday on your own private paradise, then book this apartment!
