The listing's location was excellent - very close to point lobos and all the good spots in Carmel. The location is serene and very peaceful. Mary was kind enough to keep wine, fruits and other goodies ready for us after we drove in late. The house is cozy, clean and very comfortable. We loved our stay in Carmel - thanks Mary!
The was great - as described, awesome owner, nice location, fabulous setting. Hope to be back.
Mary went above and beyond what we were expecting upon arrival: providing us with both a bottle of wine, fruit, and snacks for the morning. She greeted us at the treehouse, showed us around and also showed us some of her wonderful artwork. Also, being a long-time resident of the area she gave us some wonderful ideas on where to go for dinner. Knowing that this was a getaway weekend for us, she gave us the space we needed to be by ourselves, but was just a phone call away.
Mary was a great host. She greeted us late at night on the first day to make sure we were all set.
Her bed is amazing - super comfortable and I slept like a baby. She also has a very comfortable couch that's perfect to lounge on while reading.
Her place is perfectly located near big sur for outdoor activities and downtown Carmel where there are many quaint delicious restaurants.
Had a great stay in Mary's tree house. Great location near point lobos and Carmel, very secluded, and Mary was a great host. Had wine and bagels for us, and even left some food for us on the first night when we mentioned we were coming in late. Made for a great stay on a long weekend!
My husband and I loved our stay at Mary's Treetop cottage for our one year anniversary weekend. We checked-in late because we were driving from work in SF. When we arrived, Mary greeted us. She had some red wine for us. The candles were lit. She really set the ambiance for a romantic weekend.
Mary gave us a tour of the place, which in my opinion doubles for a gallery. The art is beautiful! Mary is an artist and owns a gallery. The bed was comfy. She also left us muffins for breakfast.
The location is also great. It is about a 10-15 minute drive from Carmel. Point Lobos (highly recommend) is just a 5 minute drive. All in all we were happy that we stayed there.
Mary provided the perfect treehouse/bungalow for our trip to Big Sur. Everything was perfectly cozy and she even left us a bottle of wine and several snacks. Great place that is close to both Big Sur and downtown Monterey restaurants.
Mair's Lair was a much-needed escape from Los Angeles for us, mentally + physically. Her guest house is just removed enough to serve as a quietly private retreat, above Mary's main residence and set back in a little wooded area. We loved enjoying espresso in the morning and wine at night on the side patio, where birds chirped peacefully during the day and deer passed by at night. The location's great too—30 minutes to an hour north of most Big Sur destinations and just 15 minutes south of the vibrant restaurant scene in Monterey (we highly recommended hitting up Restaurant 1833 on the fancy side; Hula's on the casual side—great vegan options at each). No regrets, no negative feedback. Mary was a great host and provides a wonderful getaway with her guesthouse. If you've read this far, just book it.
Awesome location, really unique space with a lovely garden patio.
Mary was great! Timely, courteous and even left us a bottle of wine!!!

I met Mary while she was painting in her gallery many years ago while visiting Carmel. She was so fun, vivacious and talented that I just had to get to know her better and so I flew back to attend one of her painting workshops. We have been dear friends ever since. My husband says he never hears me laugh so much as when I am with Mary - she is just that kind of a fun and gregarious personality. Everyone loves her.
Several years ago, when my husband and I lived in Saudi Arabia we arranged for her to come over and teach some workshops and have an art show. One of Princesses sponsored her and gave her access to her car pool and chauffeurs. Mary had such a way of making everyone feel special that one day when the Princess was sending a driver with a message all 4 drivers showed up! They just wanted to bask in her wonderful, generous energy.
A couple of months ago I travelled back to Carmel and Mary offered me a place to stay. And what a place! Her apartment is so comfortable and delightfully put together. I couldn’t believe the artwork! She had built a lovely little garden area outside the kitchen that was perfect for reading, sipping my coffee and taking pictures of the birds that came to feed and bathe. I loved my time there and so appreciate the use of her charming little hideaway. I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to visit the area and experience the peacefulness of the highlands, enjoy the fresh ocean air and blissful nights of quiet sleep all while still being within 10 minutes to the heart of Carmel. So much nicer than a hotel.
