Had a great time at the place. Extremely well kept, great location, walkable to everything, and easy to check out. Thanks, Martin.
Once we arrived in Montreal at about 10, we were unable to contact Martin for several hours and couldn't get into the apartment until about 4 o clock. We had arranged to meet at 9, but our greyhound broke down in upstate New York and delayed us. I sent Martin a message explaining we would probably be late, but it seems he did not receive this message as unbeknownst to us, he was not in the country at all and had left the keys with a friend, but had deemed it not worth giving us his friend's contact details.
It wasn't until 4 o'clock that day that we got in touch with this friend and she finally let us in having spent our first day carting around our bags and wondering if we would have to get a hostel. Airbnb support recommended looking into other options, just in case.
Upon entry she told us "don't worry about the flies" and "just open the windows it'll be fine". Subsequently we discovered that the flies were probably due to the rotten food(including about a dozen out of date eggs) left in the cupboards/fridge.
The towels that were left out smelled sour and the first thing we needed to do was find the laundry card somewhere in the apartment and do a wash. If I recall correctly, it took 3 days to get the correct wifi password from Martin I assume due to time differences with him being abroad. The balcony was full of beer bottles and boxes that looked like they'd been there for several months. The balcony does have a nice view of the city however.
When we were leaving we had arranged to meet his friend at 12 to return the keys, only to be woken at 10 to a (apologetic) message from her and that she would in fact be there in half an hour as she had to go. We emptied out our rubbish, food from the fridge, packed, mopped the floors, (apart from one cupboard we kept closed as it turned our stomachs to even open it). I don't know if this was how Martin and his roommates left it, or whether there was someone else staying there before us, but I digress.
We washed all the dishes and cleaned the kitchen, the bathrooms were mopped and as requested we left the towels and sheets stacked together ready to be picked up and cleaned.
I resent the insinuation we left the apartment in a poor state, as it was more livable than what we received.
Having said all that, the apartment is in a fairly well-serviced area in terms of metro/bus routes, its right next to Mont-Royal and downtown is only a few blocks away, theres plenty of space and one ensuite bathroom. To call the decor "spartan" would be generous, with just two lamps, one with a bare bulb to light the living room, I wouldn't recommend a family stay there, but passable for young people.
