We had a fantastic week in Simos apartment! It was even better than in the pictures, with an amazing view, very well furnished and equipped with everything you need (and even more) and it was absolutely clean. Sitting on the balcony (which is just the best!) you can look down onto the village and over the bay.
The village is lovely with very friendly people, some good restaurants and beautiful, quiet bays.
We didn't meet Simos personally but the communication was easy and the taxi driver he recommended (Christos) gave us a warm welcoming and was very sympathetic.
We would recommend Amaliapolis and especially Simos apartment to everyone!
Amaliapolys is indeed a relaxing and pitoresque location. The view from the apartment is fantastic, overlooking the bay and the entire village. The people are very friendly and helpful. We felt so at home there, my husband and I enjoyed the quiet evenings and good food in the local restaurants, and fantastic (email hidden) up the hill. The apartment itself is very cozy, rustic style with couple of cute accessories. However, it definitely needs more attention on technical side (electricity supply, bathroom, etc).
Simos, our host, already started to act on improvement.
Wonderful place with an incredible seaview. The flat was perfect for a couple but would also suit a family. There was plenty of room and the flat was light and airy with lovely decor. Very clean.
The village itself has everything you need - a well-stocked veg store, two small supermarkets, two restaurants, a kebab shop, a bar and two beach side cafes. There's no ATM, but the buses to Almyros were regular and if not there is a taxi. Everyone we met was really friendly, especially Valentino (downstairs neighbour). Valentino showed us around the village when we first arrived, having picked us up from Almyros - we got there by bus from Athens. He also gave us a lift to Volos one day and was a generally a friendly contact.
The beach itself was sandy with a beautiful clear sea - great for swimming. The cafes on the beach all do iced coffee and beer - for one of these you can use the well kept chairs and sunloungers. There is also a walk around the headland which is nice.
We used one of our weekends to travel over to Mount Pelion - via taxi to Almyros, bus to Volos and car hire. This is a beautiful part of the world, with dramatic forested hillsides dropping dramatically to the beautiful mediterranean. Definitely recommended! We also walked over to Nies - a bit of a hike but amazing wildlife in the olive groves although the place itself wasn't so interesting. On the wildlife side, there were loads of interesting insects around, but a lot of mosquitos at night. Burning the greek coils of incense seemed to work well for us though.
Of the tavernas, we preferred the one hosted by Kostos (on the left as you have your back to the sea). Great local fish and greek treats. The one of the right turned out to be mostly deep fried food....
We were there for a month, but it would also be an ideal place for a short break. The wifi signal was great - it was an idyllic place to work which we hope to return to some day!
Thank you Gwen for your good words and for taking the time to describe the house and the village to prospective guest, it was great having you at the house and I hope to see you again.
We have just spent the happiest month at Simos's beautiful apartment in Amaliapolis (also known as Mitzela) - probably one of the happiest months of my life, in fact.
It is like a secret holiday village - no other foreign tourists to speak of, but plenty of stylish Greek families taking their annual holiday there - we got the feeling most of the holiday places are owned by families who return year after year. And now we know why. If I could buy our own place here I would.
The beach and the two very cool beachside tavernas made it the ideal place for us with a very active toddler - SO safe, very calm water, SAND just offshore and loads of room to run around.
Aside from the tavernas at the beach, there are two supermarkets, two bakeries, a green grocer, cafes and seafood restaurants, so it is totally self-contained for those looking to unwind and really relax. The service everywhere is so lovely. Amaliapolis is very convenient to Volos airport in Almyros, which has car rental agencies and which is serviced by Ryanair. If you do hire a car, you can do breathtaking day-trips around Mt Pelion and even make it to the Aegean side and back.
The apartment is perfect for a couple - inside and out it's lovely, the deck is huge and the views are stunning. Everything brims with warmth and comfort. It is also very child friendly if - like us - you have a portacot for your little one.
We also appreciated the downstairs neighbours' help on several fronts, including weekly cleaning for 7 euros an hour. What a bargain; the place was immaculate every time.
What can I say? What a special place. We dearly loved it. Mitzela cast a magical spell on us and I hope we'll be back some sunny day. Simos, thank you so much. I was a wreck when we got there after a hectic few months of travelling but Amaliapolis mended me!
Simo's was a great guest , left the apt in perfect condition!
