In Winter 2014, I was invited to join the crew of the Rocinante, an 18 meter ketch operated by a team of adventuring pirates.
My pirate friends spent three years traveling through some of Europe's most difficult waters to reach La Gomera in the Canary Islands. The Rocinante suffered several breakdowns along the way, but they made it here with help of strangers and a network of friends around the world.
The Rocinante is docked at the port of Vueltas in the city of Valle Gran Rey where we spend our time fixing the boat, raising money and enjoying good times with friends. Five of us live on the boat full time.
I used to live in Budapest, where I used Airbnb to rent out my extra room (while in town) and sometimes my entire flat (when traveling in SE Asia).
What I enjoy most about hosting (aside from the handy cash) is meeting interesting people. I hosted a French chef who taught a friend and me how to make a lemon tarte. I still keep in touch with several of my former guests.
