We stayed for 3 nights at the Lizard House. Elizabeth was a wonderful host providing us with amazing eggs as well as lemongrass and honey for our nasty colds. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the tropical rainforest that surrounded us. The sound of the rains on the roof, the gentle breezes and the amazing serenade of the frogs and other creatures at night were amongst the highlights of our trip. Thank you so much for your hospitality Elizabeth.
We were greeted by Steve, Elizabeth's husband. He made us feel comfortable immediately with his laid-back and casual repartee. Fresh eggs from his hens was his way of welcome, which we enjoyed very much.
There are two separate quarters available, and one is upstairs. We got the downstairs. It is a typical, modest appointed plywood structure, with a few turtle motif decorations and furnishings. Very clean, nothing fancy. The kitchen was fully equipped with a four burner electric stove, full refrigerator, and cooking utensils. The setting is rural, extremely quiet, and far from any city or traffic noises....just the natural sounds from the night denizens of the forest. If you get the downstairs unit, you will notice any and all foot traffic above you in the living room and kitchen areas below. We asked the tenants above to please walk a bit softer, and that seemed to mollify the irritation. As long as those who live above you are willing to remove their shoes and walk consciously and considerately––it won't be a problem.
All in all, my wife, daughter and myself thoroughly appreciated our stay, especially after getting to know Steve and Liz, and seeing their concern to make us as comfortable as possible.
I enthusiastically recommend Tropical Lizard House (would've paid double for it—way better than any hotel)!
Liz and Steve were incredibly helpful and welcoming: offering us fresh eggs from their chickens and tips about the island. When a freak wind storm knocked out power for the whole region, they had a generator (which they worked hard to make sure was on whenever we needed it), a flashlight, and helpful suggestions.
The location is great: close to awesome beaches by Hilo, to Volcanoes Nat'l Park, and to tidepools and adventures in Puna. The house itself is tucked into a lush jungle, where you'll be lulled to sleep by a symphony of birds, insects, and tree frogs and visited by brightly colored geckos. Their property is also home to Tucker the dog, two friendly cats, and the aforementioned little posse of chickens.
Finally, the house is super well stocked: in addition to the typical hotel amenities (towels, soap/shampoo, WiFi/TV, etc.) they've got everything you might need for cooking and for island activities: oil and spices and condiments, sunscreen and aloe, snorkel gear and boogie boards, etc. We made use of a bit of all these, saving lots of money, waste, and valuable time on the island.
Take advantage of the amazing opportunity to stay here!
Elisabeth and steve are super friendly, funny and helpful hosts: they provided us with infos, organic eggs from their free range chickens and we coould borrow snorkels and body boards. The cute viillage of pahoa is only 10 min by car. We had a great time- many thanks to liz & steve!!!
Steve and Elizabeth gave us the aloha experience of the Big Island. We enjoyed our rest at their jungle retreat. We miss the Hawaiian weather already.
We enjoyed our stay at the Lizard House! The outdoor kitchen was a perfect place for our coffee in the morning. The location was not what we pictured but worked out fine for us exploring this side of the island. The wifi worked perfectly but the cable TV did not, but that did not matter to us as we spent all our time outdoors. :) Steve was very helpful and accommodating.
I loved this place! So cozy, with good wifi, hot showers, a soft bed, and tucked away on some incredibly beautiful land! Elizabeth and Steve were gracious hosts who knew all the best spots in Pahoa to eat and check out (Uncle Robert's night market should not be missed if you're there mid-week). I hope to be able to come back someday!
The Lizard House is in a wooded quiet spot near the end of a quiet unpaved lane. Steve and Elizabeth were gracious hosts... we really enjoyed the fresh eggs from their kitchen and the screened in porch kitchenete. It brought back memories of summer camp, but in a rainforest setting.
Vesna and I enjoyed our stay at the Tropical Lizard House very much. The bedroom and bathroom were very spacious for an apartment. All was neat and clean. The bed was especially comfortable, and the view from the bed out two windows of a billion star at night was spectacular. We enjoyed the song of tree frogs, the crowing of roosters in the morning, and the yodeling of chickens. The Tropical Lizard Apartment is very high value for the money. We would be happy to stay there again.
Turtle House is located a few miles south of Hilo and so has good access to activities in Hilo, the south Puna coast and Volcanoes National Park. It is also spacious for families, with a full kitchen, LED TV, wifi, set amid lush tropical vegetation. Steve and Liz welcomed us to the house, with Steve showing us around and Liz providing us with fresh eggs collected on the property -- a nice touch! Turtle House is a good home base for exploring the SE part of the island.
Elizabeth and Steve were very interesting to us as they are islanders from the Puna area. We enjoyed a morning of lively conversation with them.
Liz and Steve are a great couple, very interesting and fun to be around! They enjoyed a good mix of adventure and rest on our island and took excellent care of the cottage. They are certainly welcome back at my home any time!!
I have known Steve and Liz for many years, and consider them to be true friends, in many ways just like family. We look forward to staying with them when we are in Hawaii. They are really interesting and great fun to be around. They will know all the best places to see, eat and have fun at wherever they are. I can't think of anyone I would recommend more highly than them.
