My husband and I and our two kids (9 and 11 years old) are just back from our trip to Casa Astrid. We just loved it! The main part of the house is open air and screened so there's a constant ocean breeze. The bedrooms are closed off with AC which was great for sleeping. We saw Howler monkeys in the yard every day and tons of birds including little green parrots as well as some huge butterflies. There's a little sitting area on the beach where we had out coffee in the morning and watched the pelicans. There's also practically no one else on the beach so we usually had it all to ourselves.
The beach at the house is rocky but there are no waves so the kids could swim without me having to worry. We drove to Montezuma or Santa Theresa every day to play in the big waves, which the kids loved. We took surfing lessons in Santa Theresa which was also great and very reasonable.
The waterfalls at Montezuma are also fun. You can jump off the falls and swim in the pools. We also loved the Montezuma zip lines. Great guides and a great course.
Big thanks to Jenny, the property manager and owner of Cafe Coyote, who was so helpful and made us feel right at home.
Thanks so much! We'll be back next time we are in Costa Rica!
Our stay at Casa Astrid was lovely! We had everything we needed and the beds were comfy. The ocean was soothing and right there! One morning we awoke to an entire howler monkey tribe which we watched for an hour travel the trees around the house. Jenny at Cafe coyote was ever present for any need we had and rented us our bicycles and our atv to Mal Pais. We fell in love with Panderia Cabuya for breakfast and enjoyed dinner at Coyote Cafe. If you are looking for a private stay in between many lively beach towns this is a great place. We did have to travel to beaches we swam at but the journey was just as good as the beach, we really got to know our little slice of paradise.
We stayed at Casa Astrid at the end of November. From the day of booking, Tanya was exceptionally helpful with questions about the house, travel within the country, and what we should bring along.
If you want to be steps from the Cabuya beach, you can't get any closer than this. It is centrally located for getting to the stores and restaurants, and the roads to Montezuma, Mal Pais or Cabo Blanco park.
The covered patio is perfect for eating and lounging, or for watching the monkeys pass through the trees overhead. We saw saw tons of birds in the yard as well. In the front yard is a lime tree with a good supply of juicy fruit.
The bedrooms are fully enclosed to keep the a/c in, so would provide privacy to multiple couples or a mixed traveling group. If you don't need the a/c and leave the door open, you can hear the waves.
Having the washing machine was a nice bonus - it worked great & there was line outside plus an indoor rack for drying.
One thing to consider... there is no hot water. This seems to be the norm in Cabuya, but was different than we'd experienced traveling to other beach destinations.
Lastly, we can't say enough good things about Jenny, the property manager. As the first renters of the season, we had a little trouble with the internet and some appliances -she quickly found replacements and called in the cable guy. She helped us arrange a shuttle from the airport (door to door service) and find a motorcycle rental once we arrived. She also has a great restaurant and is helpful with improving your Spanish skills.
Thanks for sharing your casa Tanya!

Tanyas parents Clive and Ronit stayed and I found them to be lovely people. Everything was fine and in place when they left.
