Karen cancelled her booking for a holiday weekend in high season at the last minute by private message, she expected a full refund. I politely explained that I operate a strict cancellation policy, that means no refund in her situation, but offered to honor her booking at a future date as she said it was due to "bad news from home". I feel this offer was fair, Karen apparently did not. Karen then wrote to me in a private email that it was due to a suicide in the family and therefore I should pay her. I maintained my offer and suggested if she was still not happy contacting Airbnb and checking her coverage may be a good idea, but for some reason Karen did not do so, she did not cancel the booking through Airbnb or ask for the refund that way. Karen then made contact through the Airbnb system to send me a not nice message and a bad review.
I am sad that Karen chose to deal with the situation in this way, using the review feature to unfairly review the host, seems a immature way to deal with ones frustration. I understand that in genuine cases Airbnb will make a refund due extenuating circumstances, so it is unclear why Karen chose to only demand her refund privately and was unwilling to include Airbnb in the conversation.
Was a pleasure to host Karen, she left my place in perfect condition.
very nice person
