Hi, I'm originally from Australia. Live and work in NYC and have lived in this house for 3 years. I like art, weekends in the country, flea markets and good food.
I would say our stay at Brett's was good, but not great. He was easy to communicate with before our arrival, and made getting into the place smooth and easy. He wasn't around much, but when we did see him he was extremely laid back and friendly. He made us feel very welcomed.
The room is very modest, but comfortable. I was disappointed with the amount of dust and cat hair in the bedroom we stayed in. It seemed as though the place hadn't been swept or dusted for a long time, and I had bad allergies the whole time we were there.
If you're not a cat person or you have allergies to cats (or dust), do not stay there. If you are a cat person, you'll see that he has some of the friendliest cats you've ever met. Although they are very persistent about getting into the room.
Great location! Easy to get to Manhattan.
Brett was so nice and his place was stunning. I can't imagine you could find a better value in NYC. This area of Brooklyn is very cute (try Alchemy, Blue Sky Bakery and Gorilla Coffee) and incredibly convenient to many different subway lines heading straight into Manhattan. This block of Bergen Street is just downright idyllic. My husband and I are still raving about the gorgeous bathroom, and the bedroom is huge by NY standards. We were more than comfortable. As many have mentioned, it would be best to be a cat lover. We are, so it was just an added bonus! As I told Brett, we will back.
Brett and Shay's apartment and the neighborhood surrounding is lovely, my boyfriend and I enjoyed our stay very much. The bedroom was cozy and we had the place to ourselves most of the time. Loved the fact that there was free street parking on his block and we never had trouble finding a spot. We had access to the kitchen although honestly we were eating in the city most of the time, knowing the option was available if needed was great though. The bathroom in the home has been renovated, is well appointed and I can't say enough about the shower, love love love it. We would definitely love to stay again in the future. Thank you so much, Brooklyn was very good to us.
Also, there were two cats roaming around, lovable and curious, and we are cat lovers so they slept on the bed, which was fine by us.
Brett and his partner were fine hosts. They were very laid back, we could go and and out as we pleased, and the key pick up/drop off process was a breeze. The room was spacious and the bathroom was wonderful - they have one of those large, rain showerheads which feels amazing after a long day of walking. We felt welcome in their home and it was a pleasant stay.
If you are not a cat person, you do not want to stay here. They have two very friendly, very curious cats that in two blinks of an eye had my down vest off the arm chair and halfway down the stairs. I have a cat, so I'm used to this, but others might be less tolerant. You can close your door if they bother you, but they'll scratch at it occasionally during the night.
Also, although they are on a nice section of Bergen, it is close to Atlantic Ave and it is not entirely quiet. You will probably hear drunks, angry homeless people, and in our case a psychotic baptist preacher at 7am on Sunday... In other words, welcome to New York! We used to live in NYC, so we knew beforehand to bring earplugs.
It was our first experience with Airbnb and it was a wonderful one.
Brett is very nice, the cats are so sweet, we liked the house and the neighborhood (go to Gorilla Cafe for good coffee and amazing almond croissants from Balthazar).
The subway is very close with easy and fast connections.
We specially liked the shower (really!) and to be able to cook and to do the laundry (that was very convenient).
We had a great time, thanks!
It was our first time in New York City and with Airbnb. We spent 10 days at Brett's home.
It's the perfect place to stay: great host (friendly and interesting), a charming house (well decorated in a beautiful street with trees), a comfortable bed and a luxurious bathroom.
The nearest subway is: Atlantic Avenue/Atlantic Terminal. It's very well connected to Manhattan.
We love Boerum Hill area with restaurants, bars and shops.
This was my first experience with airbnb and Brett set the bar pretty high. His home is beautifully decorated but also manages to be really comfortable and welcoming. He was a great host, the perfect combination of helpful and hands-off. I also fell in love with the neighborhood.
Upon arrival, straight from the airport, the host helped me with my luggage up stairs which was of great relief after a long flight. I arrived hours later than originally intended because of a hiccup at the airport, but he was very gracious about this. The host is a busy person, but when I did see him he was great! He answered all questions and gave tips on places to go to and see.The photos of the rooms are as they appear.
The cats are cool. You must keep your door closed if you don't want them in your room. The bedroom is big with space to hang clothes and there is an area to leave personal items from your bags. The bed was comfy. The air conditioning was very handy. Bring earplugs if you have to use the air con to get through a humid night, or bring earplugs if you open the windows and you aren't used to the general noise NYC emanates. The bathroom is great, new and spacious. The laundry, like the bathroom, is next to your room so everything is convenient. There was a small fold away clothes rack to use to leave your wet clothes if you didn't want to use the dryer. We didn't cook, but the kitchen appeared to have what you'd need to do this. Overall, Park Slope is a charming neighbourhood and it was great to have a charming tree lined tree and friendly brownstone to return to after long busy day of exploring. Ask the host for the closest subway options as this will make getting around NYC easy.
Brett was a great host! If you dig art you will love chatting with him during your stay. I am not a huge cat guy but his cats were some of the most friendly and inviting pets you could ask for. There is great bed accomodations with a personal air conditioner so the room was very comfortable; so comfortable we passed out with the lights on! (sorry brett) The girlfriend loved the bathroom which I will say was very nice. We came and went as we pleased, the neighborhood was great (from what I hear rated best in NY) The best part about the location is it is so close to the subway that you can get anywhere conveniently with the subway system. Overall it was a great first experience using airbnb. Would recommend Brett and his place to anyone staying in ny for any length of time.
Everything was perfect! Email-contact was very friendly, getting the keys was easy, the room is very large, quiet and clean!
Brett was a great guest. I highly recommend him and would love to have him back at the apartment!
Brett and Shay were awesome guests—friendly, communicative, clean, and all-around awesome. I was happy to have them here for the weekend, as a follow-on to a work trip they were on during their week. I was happy they took my advice to get dinner at Perry's in Adams Morgan, which they enjoyed greatly. The morning before Brett and Shay left, we enjoyed a few good cups of coffee and discussed sights in and around DC, technology, and other shared areas of interests.
Brett was a wonderful guest. The room was left clean and tidy, and is he is a really nice guy. Would wholeheartedly recommend him!
