We enjoyed our stay in this charming apartment in the Plateau. The area makes an excellent base for exploring the city – you’re next door to Parc Lafontaine, as it says in the title of this listing, which is a beautiful spot to have a picnic. You’re also a short 10-minute metro ride or 30 minute walk to downtown and old Montreal. The metro is about a 5 minute walk away on Berri Street.
We never met the hosts in person, but communication was good. Kimberly and Ryan were quick to reply to emails, putting us in touch with the person who gave us the keys and then in touch with the next occupant. They left us a list of attractions in the area, and things to be aware of for the running of the household, like garbage and recycling days, wifi passwords, how-to manuals for the somewhat quirky gas stove, and so on, which was great.
The apartment is decorated with interesting masks, sculptures and photos from around the world, and is pretty spacious. The hosts have a great book collection – I was happy to see some of my favourite titles on the shelves – and we really enjoyed availing ourselves of their movie collection, which was a nice surprise.
There is no cleaning fee, so this experience was a little like being a tenant in a furnished apartment. We did our own cleaning up and laundry at the nearby laundromat, which was fine by us.
In case you have never experienced the typical Montreal walk-up apartment typology, you should be aware of some realities of life in older buildings so your expectations are realistic. This apartment, as is characteristic of the area, was most likely built around the turn of the century, so the floors slope perceptibly, the bedroom isn’t really a typical bedroom but an area separated from the sitting room with French doors, and the bathroom is off the kitchen with some dusty corners where neither tile nor grout have lasted the tests of time. The whole apartment has not been significantly updated since it was built, so it contains a hundred years of paint layers. The apartment was clean in general, but its age has made complete sterility impossible. (In the summer months, beware of bugs crawling in if you leave the interior courtyard windows open – we found this out the hard way). If you like the character and charm of an older building, you’ll probably love it, but if you are the kind of person who totes around hand sanitizer at all times, it may not be for you.
If you do stay, get to know Charlie, the neighbour’s cat! He likes to visit and if you’re very nice he may let you pet him a bit. And the outdoor balcony is a great spot to eat dinner by candlelight and people-watch as Montrealers head to the Parc with baguettes under their arms in the twilight.
Kimberly and Ryan were friendly, considerate and respectful. They left my place as clean as they found it :). The communication was clear and good , so perfect guests to have in my house.
Ryan and Kimberly were wonderful guests and I would be glad to host them any time.
Lovely guests, thank you for being Easygoing, happy and understanding and sincere couple.
Kimberly and I were colleagues first and then soon became friends :-) I definitely recommend her as both a guest and a host. Kimberly and Ryan's apartment is charming, very central and located in one of Montreal's coolest neighbourhoods. Seize the opportunity!
Kim is a good friend of mine. We met through work and we have known each other for about 3 years now. Kim is passionate about her work, about life and social experience. She is trustworthy, very friendly, and will always do her best to accommodate her guests. I recommend her both as a host (her apartment is very well located and is very charming) and as a guest.
Kim and Ryan's apartment is in one of the most charming spots in Montreal. It's a hidden gem in quiet residential area beside Parc Lafontaine yet a very short walking distance to Mont Royal, St Denis and St Laurent. I've known Kim and Ryan for 20+ (OMG!) years and have had the pleasure of travelling with them. Travel is their hobby and as a result their apartment is furnished with beautiful artifacts from their numerous trips to Africa, South America, Europe etc. If you stay at their place make sure to relax on their balcony and eat at the amazing little Tunisian restaurant down the street.
