So nice to have you Pasquale. Glad we had a chance to meet and have some time together. It's nice to have a good review when you stayed at the same time as Pierre did. Everyone is different. Pierre actually mentions in his room that you were unhappy with your room because you were shown a picture of a room different from what I gave you (which wasn't the case). So you stayed in the upper loft room which is what you booked, and I was happy to move you when you asked and another room with larger space was available at no extra cost.
See you when you come to stay again in December. 1luv xoxo
I am truly sorry that Akhil feels this way from visiting my home and it was not my intention for anyone to have this experience. I have been with Airbnb for over 5 years and do live in my apartment. Normally I am there to take care of everything from nuts and bolts. This review is completely taken out of context in a few areas, and over-embellished by Akhil because neither Akhil nor I had the time or hours to identify what was going wrong and I was far away and didn't even realize that there were any problems until the guests were leaving. Most of the things were not even communicated to me so I had a previous guest before Akhil rob me and take even my keys and I didnt even know it. I didnt know the router had been taken affecting the internet, or the keys, etc so Akhil didnt know the entire story and I didn't know all of what happened until I arrived home after Akhil moved out in Sept.
I was in South Africa and had been asked to help the Mandela family with my life work as a global humanitarian who produces work to help the most poor and suffering communities. I have done this all my life since Madiba came to thank me in 1990 when he got out of Robben Island for being a college activist who helped raise the US corporate responsibility and global press to help free him in the Free Mandela campaign. (website hidden) is my company.
With that being said I was certainly in remote areas of Africa during most of Akhil's stay. I do rent out my space when I am out of the city or country and I do not announce this or am I required to do so according to Airbnb policy. I did thought let Akhil be aware that I was in South Africa before he arrived, and that when I was on wifi it would be very infrequently (this includes my cell phone WhatsApp Viber or Email) I also informed him that there isnt even reliable wifi or internet in most places I was at if I did chose to pay for it, but that it cost A LOT to call but evento send any messages (something we take for granted living in US) so sometimes i was abrupt in my messaging because of this fact but not because I lack social skills as anyone can read most of the reviews here for the me over the past 5 years show I was not a rude person.
in fact, we tend to point out in others what we also do and Akhil neglected to inform me before moving in a SHARE room (sharing with a stranger who rents the top of the loft) that he had very odd and long hours that he would need to have silence from early evening or be getting up at 430am which is something important to communicate if he is doing a residency or whatever he was doing in preparation to be a Dr. I was told by the person who Shared with him that the other airbnb guest started sleeping on the couch because Akhil would refuse to leave the door open so that the air can circulate with 3 men living in a room he thought the smell was not comfortable for him and the share guest felt forced to leave the space. I asked PAsquale not to sleep on the couch because a guest who was there RIGHT Before them (while I was in S Africa) had broken the couch and I needed to take pictures and not further damage it. Also Airbnb was doing an investigation on the broken items so I didnt want to mislead anyone. The former guest also stole a router, and video camera to name a few other things like sunglasses and music recording equipment I had in storage in the loft. This guest who was there before Akhil also went through my personal belongings and took keys that look like they go to my front door but did not match the current bolt so when other guests came for the 3rd bedroom they complained their keys did not work. I was in another country and no one even told me they didnt have the right keys. When Akhil left there were a bunch of sets of keys on top of the dresser in the room he used and none of them fit my front door and that's how I realized someone went through my personal spaces. I dont even know who did this exactly. Somehow the original keys were not given back to the next guest. So I did not ask Akhil to do things for me and run errands per se. He had the ONLY working set of keys and since the others were taken or lost we needed to get a way to get them copied. Since his hours were very long and I didnt want him to be inconvenienced by taking HIS key set I figured the home depot open 6am until 10p 3 blocks away from my apartment was not a lot to ask for opening my home to him. I also incurred problems from the guest who he shared with and had to take a loss and give him another room for the trouble he had when Akhil would not work with him regarding leaving the door open during the day so the (3) air conditioners in the apartment could help cool their room during hot summer days. I do have pictures of the drycleaned bags of pillows and comforter that was very visibly in white garbage bags right under the stairs in Akhil's room that he says were not there. I think when you have the right attitude the results are better for everyone. It shouldnt have been so inconvenient for him to allow someone to pick that up since I sent him, and the 2 other guests in the apartment emails, whats app and text messages for 3 -4 days ahead of time each day to say my cleaning person needed to get access to the apartment and could not because of the lost key issues. She was also trying to put a lock box (now on the door knob) on the door so we didnt have to bother the airbnb guests with anything. Our neighbor had our extra set of keys and when an airbnb guest took them and did not return them it caused a lot of problems for this group that stayed from the months of July and August. Then the cleaning lady could not get access and it caused all of the issues Akhil is referring to and they snowballed. This is not a normal order of how things would go down in my apartment ever. The person who stayed in the room with Akhil is still staying in my apartment so all of Akhil's complaints couldnt have been that bad, but I gave him his own space because of the problems with sharing with akhil specifically how comfortable it was to sleep in with the smell. I also found a lot of cigarette cases in Akhil's room and in my apartment after people left so people were not abiding by rules set forth in my profile because I was not there to monitor it.
I do ask for people even when I am here, to pick up after themselves and to treat this home as if it were their own. I do ask them to leave the room clean. Akhil referred to a $40 cleaning fee he paid as an additional fee and I did let him know that was for shared things he and his guest would use for a month like toilet paper, garbage bags, dish liquid, dish sponges, mop heads, rags, mopping liquid. I don't think leaving the room clean is that unreasonable since the bathroom and things were not kept clean as they used them. I paid someone to come in 2x during his stay and lost money paying them when they couldn't get access because of the lost lock and key issue. I have resolved them since I returned home to help the Mandela family partake in the UNGA, Clinton Global Iniaitive and Global Citizen concert. I hope this resolves any miscommunication he might have had with his experience and he learns something in the process as I have. WE are very privileged society that can show compassion a bit more and learn to help each other to get by in this world. I opened up my home and personal space and was in a very poor country doing work with people dying while I had people robbing me and making havoc in my home across the world. Maybe he could have seen it from my point as well since he used airbnb to save himself money to work in a hospital in my area and do what he feels is his passion in the world. WE all live in this world together. It's definitely a lesson.
Jesse's experience was not a common experience for my airbnb guests as you can see in my reviews for the past 5 years in my profile. It was unfortunate that Jesse had problems gaining access to my apartment and was left waiting as well as not having the room ready in re to the sheets situation. I felt bad that my hands were completely tied when I was out of the country in Africa (in a third world country deep in the bush) and a bunch of things transpired in my apartment that I was unaware of and I tried to resolve quickly which did happen within a few hours in regards to Jesse. I did touch in with Jesse the evening he checked in via messaging and he said they were given clean sheets and my cleaning person did go get clean sheets for him around 10p in the night which was documented by another airbnb guest when they complained at someone coming so late at night. I have a lock box on my door now so a key is always available if people need to gain access without relying on anyone else. Because the keys were lost while I was away but I didnt even realize the keys were lost, the keys were also not available for my cleaning person to pick up from the neighbor who originally had the keys. One of the airbnb guests was told to take the key to get inside but use the set of keys in their room and give my neighbor the set back for our cleaning person. The airbnb guest kept the keys and never gave them back .. so this is what started and caused problems for more than one airbnb guest who was in this 3 bedroom share apartment at the same time. It was excruciatingly difficult to find a service who was reliable even though I paid for 2 services through groupon and cleaning service company that took my credit card and didnt get in because no one told me the key was taken. I sent a friend in the neighborhood to check on and take care of things last minute but the sheets Jesse were given were not dirty. I was the one that told her where to find the clean sheets in my apartment. In the future, I will not hire these outside companies when I am not physically in the space . I have a person now that i've hired that I have shown personally what to do in my apartment to keep it in condition that I keep it in top to bottom and has a reputation to be reliable because they've been referred by a celebrity I work with and worked for them for over 6 years now. Jesse is welcome to come stay for a free weekend anytime he would like when I have availability for the troubles he had. I am deeply regretful that 2 months when I was traveling turned out this way and has affected anyone's experience, traveling or my reputation working with Airbnb in this manner. I rely on this to help me do the humanitarian and work I do in the world and I would never have wanted this to happen to anyone. It was not my intention.
