20 years of growing up, 20 years of traveling the world, 20 years of settling down. After all that moving about horizontally across the planet, it was time to stay in one place, moving vertically up and down through the seasons. Meditation, gardening, permaculture, stepping lightly and using only what is needed wove themselves together quite naturally. That's the quiet part. Zest and zing come from playing a tiny ukulele and a large taiko drum. Reading (I prefer history, biography and memoirs, and, at the moment, stirring sea adventures set in the period of the Napoleonic wars) and writing (I write non-fiction; women's history and biography-memoir) keep my mind curious. Playing Scrabble with friends, and reading English cozy mysteries translated into French, Spanish and Portuguese keeps it flexible.
I find there is always something wonderful here to learn or observe: a new way to prepare the cassava I grow, how to keep mongooses from getting the chickens' eggs, how my relationship to bugs and weeds keeps changing. It's endless, and endlessly satisfying. Simple pleasures all, come share!
