Old San Juan is lovely!
Although our host, Jose, was out of the country during our stay in Old San Juan he went to great lengths to make us feel welcome. His friend (Bernábe) gave us the keys to the apartment and a rundown on the greater San Juan area.
The apartment itself was very clean and inviting. We found a complimentary bottle of wine and snacks in the kitchen. Jose also left frozen fruit in the freezer which we enjoyed during humid San Juan mornings.
Jose also made sure to post friendly reminders about how to set up the wifi and to turn off the air conditioner before showering to avoid a power outage. There was an abundance of toilet paper and bath towels for our use. He also left us a table full of maps and brochures for fun activities in and around Old San Juan.
The apartment had satellite television, a reliable internet connection, an air conditioner in the bedroom, and a clean kitchen and bathroom.
We were fortunate to be located in the heart of Old San Juan. We could see the main plaza and the harbor of Old San Juan from our balcony. The Castillo de San Crístobal is less than a block away from his apartment. We discovered dozens of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants within a ten block radius of the apartment. There are also two banks, a grocery store, pharmacy and post office within walking distance.
We were able to travel throughout San Juan from the main bus depot down the street. Bernábe also clued us in about a ferry to Catano that leaves from the adjacent port to the bus depot.
Taxis / Guaguas are easily accessible throughout Old San Juan, and are cheap and convenient alternatives to the buses, which are not always time efficient. Jose advised us not to rent a car. We enjoyed walking to nearby beaches and famous landmarks from the apartment. We recommend walking to Condado for a paddle boarding and jetskiing along the beautiful coast.
In order to get to Fajardo (Culebra / Vieques) or El Yunque, we suggest scheduling a Guagua in advance. However, buses come as early as 5:30 in the morning at the Old San Juan bus depot.
Checking out of the apartment was seamless. Bernábe called us the day before check out to set up a time to pick up the keys. The apartment was already spotless and easy to maintain throughout our trip.
By far the best trip to PR yet! Jose was an awesome host, his space is awesome. Pictures cannot accurately describe exactly what the space entails. The view is amazing, the breeze that flows through and location! Location, location!! The best!! Bed is comfortable and the AC in the bedroom is perfect. Jose was very personable, attentive & had great advice on places to go for a night out and places to eat. Would absolutely stay with Jose again and plan on it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
My experience was awesome! Jose is great - so incredibly reliable. My friend and I came to San Juan for a long weekend from the cold New York City winter. Our flight was delayed coming in, but Jose did not mind picking us up from the airport even in the middle of the night! (for the $30 roundtrip - totally worth it). Even at that hour, he showed us around his building, the apartment, had towels, bedding, beach chairs, bikes!, a cooler, everything we needed for a beach weekend available for us. The neighborhood of Santurce was a perfect location too - less than a 5 minute walk from the beach, and about 5 miles away from San Juan - my friend and I even rode the bikes into San Juan one afternoon! Also, Friday and Saturday nights, the place to go in Santurce is "La Placita" - a 10 minute walk from the apt (or short cab ride) for lots of good food, drinks, mingling and dancing! We really had a blast. We couldn't stop talking about how much happier we were with this authentic Puerto Rican experience, rather than staying a big casino/resort. We got to know the people around town, at the market, and local restaurants - ALL of the locals (Jose included) are warm, friendly and incredibly helpful. Also, the Cafe on the ground floor of Jose's building is GREAT for breakfast - service is a bit slow so don't be in a rush, but well worth the wait! Overall, this was a fantastic experience. I already want to go back!
This is our 2nd stay with Jose. The place is in a great location and clean. The kitchen is now well appointed. Jose is very nice and helpful and drove us to the airport. A wonderful place to stay.
Great location, very close to the beach and to the 24h supermarket.
The appartment is big enough for a couple, has a full kitchen and wifi.
Jose is a great host, he's available if guests have questions or problems.
We (2 adults) stayed with Jose for 11 nights and our stay was great!! If you're looking for an affordable place to stay in Old San Juan, this apt is perfect. We were centrally located and near many great restaurants and bars. The beach in Condado is a short bus ride away (bus station is very nearby).
Jose was very helpful with our late check-in of 1 AM and even gave us a ride to the airport on our day of departure.
The apartment was fairly minimalistic but we were the first guests to stay there (likely more things to be added in the future) and we really didn't need (or want) much. He provides clean towels, sheets, dishes, fridge space, etc. The bed was comfortable and perfect for the two of us. Room has air conditioning.
The downstairs neighbors are a little loud but as soon as we turned on the air conditioning in the bedroom, we couldn't hear them at all and they never disrupted our sleep.
We did not rent a car but parking is limited in the area so we wouldn't recommend it unless you really want to deal with the hassle.
Definitely would recommend renting from Jose whether in his OSJ apt or Condado studio. Very helpful and responsive host!
Had a wonderful trip to San Juan. Jose was an excellent host, providing insider tips and everything I needed. My flight was 4 hours delayed and Jose has no problem with a late check-in. The apartment was clean and excellently located. I recommend Jose's place for a trip to San Juan/Condado area.
The location is great. The price is right. Jose is a very nice quiet, unobtrusive and very helpful person. The kitchen could use a few more cooking utensils and the neighbors downstairs are a bit noisy coming in at midnight playing music and talking out loud that's the only drawback to this place. Again for the price and the location is great and we will certainly stay here again when we come. Thank you very much Jose.
We have nothing but good things to say about Jose and the apartment. He was very quick to respond, no matter what the issue was. He offered advice about all sorts of things every time we spoke- from festivals in old San Juan to the best places to eat and drink. His recommendations are spot on! We had an extended stay, and therefor made full use of the kitchen- it was well outfitted to cook just about anything. I was pleased to leave San Juan knowing I have a good friend in Jose. We would recommend his apartment to anyone, and hopefully will get the chance to stay again next year!
It has been an awesome three days living in this property. The location is great and the room is spacious. It is even better with a kitchen in the unit and parking space downstairs. I would definitely live here again if I were to visit San Juan again!
Jose kept in constant communication about his travel plans.
Es una persona muy agradable y amable .
