Geaorge and Mary Anne are very responsive and made sure our stay was smooth and comfortable. The Water Tower Cottage is perfect for a get-away to unplug. Plenty of great books on site. The kitchen is well equipped with cookware, silverware, spices… Heating works really well. Plenty of gorgeous trails and beach walks nearby, a short walk into town.
Perfect spot, withing walking distance to town as well as to Headland. I'd add MacKerricher State Part to the list of amazing coastal places to visit: seals, pelicans, those clownish oyster catchers, even the odd puffin. Ella, West Cornwall CT
An annual Mendocino trip has happened most of my 30 years on earth and I've been really lucky to have been able to continue this tradition with my toddler the last two years (three if you count his in utero trip!). Over the years Mendocino seems to have gotten more and more expensive, and I've had to look harder to find affordable accommodations. While it's totally crazy to me that paying over $175/night is now a deal in Mendocino, that's what it's come to and this water tower really is a deal!
The good: well stocked kitchen, lots of sleeping surfaces (full bed in a loft and two twin beds downstairs; a queen bed in the upstairs room), great views of the headlands and ocean. Also George was great at making sure we were able to check in easily and was very friendly. There were lots of board games to play and a harp that my son loved!
The not as good: the upstairs room had a strong musty smell and there were ants downstairs (keep your food in the fridge!), I'm pretty sure the door to the roof patio was not working (we couldn't for the life of us figure it out), and it's still blowing my mind that $175/night doesn't include sheets or towels! I totally understand the water issues in Mendocino, but it was kind of a bummer to have to make the bed before we could put our toddler to sleep for the night (we arrived late due to holiday traffic).
We had a great time at the cottage. It is in a lovely location, walking distance from the Mendocino Headllands park, with lots of trails down to the beach, and a beach view. The cottage itself was well-equipped, and the grocery store a quarter mile away downtown had everything we needed to do cooking at home as desired. Mendocino itself was charming, with a gorgeous beach and lots to do. My only reasons for not giving the cottage 5 stars were 1) the layout is a little funky with the bedroom on the second floor with an outside stairwell and the only bathroom on the first floor and 2) there's a loud, infrequent "clunk" from what I would guess is a water pump. However, we quickly adjusted to these oddities and enjoyed ourselves.
I visited with two friends and this cottage was wonderful. It was an easy walk to downtown and the bluffs. The kitchen was small but well stocked, and we made a nice dinner for ourselves.
Loved our stay. It didn't hurt that we had 80 degree weather - a very un-Mendocino display. The cottage had amazing views, was close to town, and was right next to the local high school where we were almost treated to a Sunday afternoon football game - but it was canceled on account of the visiting team not showing up. Great experience all around - even though we only stayed 2 nights it felt like we were all in full "vacation mode". Highly recommended.
The reservation was canceled 291 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
We had a wonderful stay - I actually didn't realize how beautiful the view would be. The tower is so charming and really quite comfortable. We slept upstairs and came downstairs for the rest of it all. It was a bit musty, but I don't think out of character for an old building. That's the only reason why it didn't get 5 stars. But we were warm, the bed was comfortable, and the location truly can't be beat. Instead of hearing cars and conversation, you hear the ocean! Perfect.
My wife Dee and I had a wonderful experience staying at George and Mary Anne's home in Mendocino. It was very convenient to downtown Mendocino. This was our first airbnb experience and we're impressed. We had listed airbnb in our Sites & Bites mini-guide series and wanted to check it out. Thanks George and Mary Anne we hope to see you again soon.
Best wishes, Dee and Dick aka Mr. Sites & Bites
I stayed at George and Mary Anne's Ocean View Water Tower Cottage along with three other people to attend a friend's wedding in Mendocino. The location was fantastic – just a five minute walking distance to Mendocino Village and not too far at all from Cyprus Grove where our friends' wedding ceremony took place (also great for pictures!). We had a wonderful time staying here. The cottage was cute, very spacious (we ended up not using the top bedroom), and George and Mary Anne do a great job at keeping the place in tip top condition. From the binoculars that were placed on the cute kitchen table beside the beach-facing window, to the binders and brochures they leave on the coffee table, to the board games they leave above the kitchen cabinets, we enjoyed every moment staying here and greatly appreciated the effort the Dreaper family went through to make this a fun and cozy experience for all visitors. I'd book the cottage in an instant if I get the chance to visit Mendocino again. Thanks so much for your hospitality and for having us, George and Mary Anne!
Mary Anne and her friend who stayed with us for three days both seemed to be charming people and were very pleasant guests.
Mary Ann and her friend were a pleasure to host - easy to make arrangements with and respectful of my flat. I would recommend her to other hosts.
