Moved to the keys in 2004 and love it. I love anything about the water, and really enjoy the island lifestyle, traded in my heels for flip-flops!
We loved our time on The Big Bamboo with lovely sunsets and sounds of slopping water. It was really well equipped once you found the various storage locations.
My husband, adult daughter and I spent 4 days on the Big Bamboo houseboat and just loved it! Abi goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable and at home. You feel like family! Her houseboat is in a private area with a few other boats and they have their own beach (we swam and snorkeled every day), kayaks, paddle boards, bicycles, hammocks, grills, colorfully lit lounging/eating areas in the sand and on the houseboat. My husband and I had the king bed below and it was extremely comfortable and cozy, even though the ceiling is low and my husband is very tall! We were there April 7-11 and the weather was perfect, no storms, no mosquitos, just beautiful skies and warm sun. Abi also told us about superb restaurants where we ate in addition to the farmer's market which supplied us with tons of fruits and vegetables for other meals. everything was so close! We took a catamaran out to snorkel off the coral reef and saw a small shark, a manta ray, tons of fish, in spite of the somewhat rough sea that day. Perhaps the highlight was the second day swimming in their beach area. We suddenly realized there was a very large manatee sitting under us, just watching us. So we got to swim with it for about 15 minutes. We followed it out into the open water and back into another bay. Pretty amazing! We would highly recommend Abi's boats and would love to do it again! It was just amazing. It's a great option to stay on the Keys and if you compare it to hotel offers it's a quite cheap way too! Abby designed her boat with (as we call it in Germany 'Liebe zum Detail') 'love to details' like the hula lamp in the kitchen. It is a lot of fun to stay on deck and watch the sea and perhaps even the manatees. If you are going to be on this boat you should plan at least one day just to relax on deck, on beach and on the free kayaks. Abby was a perfect host, so if we ever return to the Keys, we would choose the Bamboo boat a second time.
We just had 4 glorious nights, the weather was perfect and the boat is nicely situated in the harbour. Everything was so convenient and the boat was really spacious and clean the only thing it could improve is better pots and pans for cooking. We can't wait to go back!!!
We had a wonderful vacation on the Big Bamboo house boat. Abigal was called away and we did not get to meet her. However the people she left in charge ,Lysa and Mike were so friendly, gracious, and helpful . We were treated like VIPs.
The boat was exactly as described; The sunsets more amazing then one could imagine; and the grounds were so clean and cared for we could not have been more comfortable. It was a super experience!!
We had a wonderful visit to the Lil' Bamboo houseboat. The location on the water is perfect and the roof top deck makes for an ideal location to relax and also to watch the sunset. The houseboat sits in a small marina full of other houseboats so there is a community feel to the location. The amenities nearby (beach chairs, hammocks, grill, etc) add to the location's charm and access to bikes, kayaks and paddleboards provide free entertainment as well. The pictures are a great representation of what the houseboat is like; basic accommodations but a unique and very fun experience. The waves lapping up against the boat at night are a little louder than I anticipated, but if you run the AC and wear ear plugs it drowns out most of the nice. Since its a houseboat the interior can sometimes feel small (with 3 people in it) but the fabulous roof area really extends your space and makes it feel much larger. We took most of our meals on the roof deck and when the wind was calm we were even able to play cards upstairs too.
Lastly, Abby is a great host. She was attentive throughout the whole reservation process and she lives on the site so she's able to address immediate concerns if they arrive. Additionally she was able to recommend local activities (such as places to kayak and fishing tour groups) that contributed to our excellent visit. I'd highly recommend Lil' Bamboo as a unique way to experience Key Largo.
Loved every inch of the Big Bamboo. Every stitch of the houseboat was lovingly created. The weather cooperated and the sunsets were unmatched. Brent was an absolute pleasure! We would go back in a minute. Our only concern would be that getting in and out of the houseboat is not for anyone with a mobility issue.
We enjoyed a week aboard Abigail's Big Bamboo. She was out of town so we did not meet her but there were people there to make sure we had everything we needed.
It was a great experience, the boat was very comfortable and the dock/park area it was in was great. We kayaked, saw Manatees swim up to the boat, relaxed and read on the sand and in the hammocks and lounge chairs. We also went snorkeling among the coral reef at John Pennekamp State park close by.
We found it most comfortable to use the showers and bathroom on shore which was only steps away. We used the bathroom on the boat at night for convenience.
There was a fresh seafood market and restaurant across the street where we bought fresh fish to pan fry on board. We had some great meals. Of course there were plenty of restaurants nearby also.
Our favorites were the Key Largo Fisheries/Backporch and Mrs. Mac's (especially breakfast).
This was definitely a place we would return to.
We wanted a relaxing place for a long weekend to visit family and the Big Bamboo and surrounding beach park area were AWESOME.
It was CLEAN, cozy and you can't beat the views!
The neighbors were great and we met some really nice people.
If we had not been in a cold snap we would have used the paddle boards and kayaks provided.
The boat was a great adventure, very relaxing and if you are not adventurous enough to try the marine toilet and shower, a very large, clean bathhouse was steps away.
Abby thought of everything- the bed is in the hold- and while you may think it would be claustrophobic- it was actually cozy and well lit. For those of us who are light sleepers- the water slapping against the boat can be noisy- and she had ear plugs for us!
We had a just finished a week long cruise, and stayed on Big Bamboo for 3 nights while exploring the Keys. It was a wonderful relaxing experience after being on a mega ship. The compound was a little slice of heaven in the middle of the busy Keys, and everyone we met was friendly. The waterfront location provided us with stunning sunsets & sunrise. We didn't use many of the facilities, but the next time we will be sure to make use of the kayaks. Abby was a wonderful host who shows us the in/outs of the boat, and was available for any questions or help we needed. Thanks for sharing Abby.
I met Abby last year in New Orleans while working on a film. We would run into each other from time to time and I just loved her sweet disposition and her hilariousness. We both ended up in Baton Rouge working on separate projects. She stayed with me at my apartment during the work week and usually went to NOLA on the weekends. Abby is just lovely. No stress. No Drama. As far as I know Abby she is a very eclectic fun loving person. I was going to say spur of the moment but she plans well and is smart about her career an financial planning. She works hard, plays hard and knows how to love life and inspires the people along the way. Oh yeah. She is clean and organized and I am sure her place is a reflection of her uniqueness.
