everything is nice
The pics don't do this place justice. It's absolutely charming! The living room is fantastic with the windows open during the day, listening to the boardwalk come alive(Micahel Jackson dance party!) while reading or working on the computer. Also a fantastic room for the evening with the ambiance. Bedroom, kitchen and bathroom are all great as well. Al is super nice and accommodating! Leaving breakfast food, even bringing extra toiletries and leaving them outside a few days into my stay!
Al is nice and friendly～we feel comfortable～
The space was great! Beautiful apartment, shabby chic building and decor right near Venice Beach Boardwalk. I felt welcome: Alva left snacks for us, gave us a tour, and was accommodating with our timing. Only awkward part was having to go through the back door to avoid the neighbors. Lovely stay, thank you!
Great place to stay! I contacted Al at the last minute due to my flight getting cancelled. He responded within the hour and was available to let me in to the apartment soon after.
Great spot. Conveniently near LAX and Manhattan Beach. Very accommodating on short notice. Clean place.
Al was a good host. We booked last minute and arrived well after planned (11pm). Despite being late, he had fresh baked cookies waiting for us! The building was as described: its pretry decrepit. The apartment, however, was in good condition. It had everything we needed for our stay...except a tv, lol. A couple of cons: stairs...SO MANY STAIRS, the condition of the outside, no tv and it's not truly a one bedroom, there's a Murphy bed in the middle room. Pros: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Al's place is only 1 block from the boardwalk! We rented bikes and toured from muscle beach to Santa Monica. Abbot Kinney is a 5 min walk and it's 10 minutes from practically everything else. We had a blast and would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Al was very gracious in allowing us to stay on such short notice. he met us at the unit and made us feel welcome, even providing breakfast items, which we were not expecting!
Nice little apartment very well situated if you have to move around L.A. Very quiet and safe place to stay. The private parking space in the basement garage adds value to this place. Al was a great host, very flexible with the check in and check out times.
I'm going to start off by saying I'm not upset about our stay, but I wouldn't go back to this one.
First, the good. It's fairly large and certainly could accommodate 2 couples. Which means, if you're two pairs and you're looking for a relatively inexpensive place to stay in LA, this apartment is a pretty good deal. The parking was underground in a gated garage, that was nice. There was a nice little balcony on the apartment that would have been great if it weren't raining.
Now the parts I'm less thrilled with. For starters, Alva is not a woman, he is a man named Al. He being a him isn't an issue in and of itself, but it's a little confusing and in a situation like AirBnB misrepresentation gets concerning quickly. Next, he doesn't list the true address. Al claims this is because he doesn't want people showing up and bothering his neighbors. Being that the apartment is in a gated complex, this rationale doesn't hold water for me. Combining these two things together we showed up at an address that wasn't the right address and were speaking with a man when we expected a woman.
Earlier that day we told him we would be there in a few hours, but didn't give an exact time. He told us he worked near by and would have to meet us when we were on our way. We had agreed to text him when we were leaving downtown, but forgot. So, when we arrived we called, and had to wait for him to come over, no big deal, it's our fault we didn't text. However, when he got there he told us he needed 20 minutes to clean and he'd text us the real address when he was ready. Not cool.
Al turned out being nice enough, but he comes across as being a little off. I can't, and wouldn't, tell you there was anything specifically wrong with Al. But all things added together, we felt a bit uncomfortable at first.
Our only truly material gripe was the cleanliness. My partner is more sensitive about things being clean than I am and the apartment didn't feel clean to me. Also, it didn't smell great. It wasn't dirty enough that we wanted to leave, but this factor alone would be enough to deter us from staying here again. This makes the $30 cleaning fee feel like a bit of a slap in the face.
So, if you're two young college couples and you want a place in this part of town, it's not a bad deal. If you're alone or one couple, I think you can do better for a similar price.
Al is a really nice person. I met him the summer of 2011 as I stood at his appartment int Los Angeles. After the trip I flew back to Europe and realized that I forgot my new sunglasses in the rental car in LA. I asked him to go to the rental car company, pick them up and send them to me. He did everything very quickly and without giving any problems. So I am very happy that he helped me.
I recommend to anyone to go to his nice place in LA, as he is a great host.
