First of all, we did not call Kelly every night, it was 2 times about this issue and that was because she never addressed it. Regardless, she never provided us with the key to the entrance of the building even still after we requested, therefore we got locked out multiple times. Calling a host at 3 AM in the morning mean there is an EMERGENCY; ie we could not get into our room, NOT because we forgot the code. We had told her this and she never responded to this issue, but rather neglected it.
Secondly, being stranded outside after 12 AM is NOT safe nor ideal for a place we had rented, especially we could not even be inside the building. All 3 times, we had to wait for local building residents to help us get in. As stated in my first review, I had already said the gate code does not give you access to the building, and it was useless because there is already an opening next to the gate to allow you to enter without the code. The gate/opening does not give you access to the front door of the building, which was the part that was locked, and the only way to our room.
Thirdly, the day of arrival was terrible because we did not know what Kelly looked like. The airbnb account has two names "Leo & Kelly" and during the emails, there were never any indication whether we were dealing with Kelly or Leo individually. On top of that, the profile picture only has a picture of a guy, so when were looking, we looked for someone that matches the picture. It is irresponsible of the host to recognize us first and did not approach us, as we had not met at the time agreed upon by both parties, and that was the day of arrival and we were trying to call the host for 2 hours with her phone being disconnected. We did not receive any instructions to how to get in the building prior to meeting, besides to meet in front of the building, in which she was not there as well at the time agreed on. It is inaccurate to say that it is our responsibilities to find the host if they are not there at the time agreed upon, nor an accurate picture to help us identify.
Moreover, I had stated that the host was nice, and there was NOTHING WRONG WITH THE APARTMENT. Yes, she provided us with some requested appliances and extra towels, oven mitts, and paper towels. Is it not the responsibility of the host to make sure we have all that is necessary? If she was not okay, then she should have declined it, not used it against us. We did not ask for anything unreasonable either; having extra towels and paper towels and toilet paper because there are 4 of us(all girls) and we were there for 5 days with only one extra roll of paper towel and toilet paper. The oven mitts were requested because there is oven and how are you supposed to use the oven without oven mitts? The extra appliances were just a toaster and a blender. I had asked prior to the arrival date if these appliances were available, and then she responded with a yes for toaster but no for blender. On the day we arrived, after the mess we had, she offered us freely to bring those things, we never repeated the request since she already answered it in the email. I still have the emails to prove this.
Also, on the comment on leaving the apartment filthy. We left ONE bag of trash that is not ripped/overspilled because we were not sure where the dumpster was and was never told where either. In fact, it was just a regular 13 gallon trash bag that was tied with a knot and left near the trash can area. Nothing in the apartment nor the appliances were destroyed, stained, ripped, damaged. All the appliances and plates/dishes were returned washed, CLEANED, and functional as they were given.
Upon our written review, we hoped that the same situation is not repeated to future visitors as being stranded and locked outside at night was not safe. We hoped that the day of arrival for future visitors will be not be as disasterous as ours since we relied on checking in on time of agreement since we are unfamiliar with the area and were exhausted from the long flight. Not only we were NOT be able to check in early like promised or even on time, but we did not have anywhere to go nor any source to contact with the host being unresponsive. We were thankful that the place was kept as described in the ad, which we had also stated in the original review. On top of that, the deposit was returned full so we appreciated that as well because it was fair. BUT the truth remained that we felt it was not a perfect experience, that is why we did not give it at 5 stars. The review was written as accurate as we felt we could give it, not to purposely lower the quality of the place.
And lastly, we feel that is unnecessary, DISRESPECTFUL, and unreliable for the host to inadvertently took our honest review bitterly and embellished UNTRUE negative comments and tried to make the situation look like its our fault and we deserved to be treated like that. We have no reason to make the place look bad, it has no benefits for us. I even stated that all of us had a wonderful time Miami, minus all the apartment drama. And since we don’t even see the host at all, except for the time of arrival, it should be even more important that she be prompt and accurate to make sure that her renters are properly greeted and welcomed accordingly to the apartment. I find that it irresponsible that instead of trying to be sincerely apologetic for the unpleasant experience, she tried to pawn it off as if we are ignorant and should be punished.
I had even written and spoke to airbnb customer service about Kelly’s review as well, and they had advised me to publish this so that ALL future renters can be aware of this, as they have access to the history of all the messages between Kelly and I from the very beginning and has a call log from which we had called when we couldn’t reach her.
The review on the place was based on OUR experience, each future renter can judge for themselves if we were fair. If the host had been consistent and fair with each renter in the past, then she should have nothing to worry about. We should have NOT been a target for giving an HONEST review with our experience. While we feel like that place was nice, please make sure to be careful with the host, and I would gladly answer any concerns for any renters who wants more detail on how my experience was at this place so that they can be fully aware of the situation.
