2nd time here. Another great relaxing time.
Overall we had a fine stay (end of August 2013). The cabin is simple and charming from the outside. Inside, the real treat is the master bedroom which feels like a proper retreat with a view right from bed out the sliding doors to Hood Canal (not to mention the vaulted cieling, nice paint job and wainscoting). The second bedroom is large enough only for a big bunk bed. The bathroom has a small standing shower. There are no doors that seperate the bedrooms from the living areas. It worked out ok for us but others may not find it a good fit. The kitchen has mostly everything you need and it's handy to have a dishwasher. There is a nice old-style furnace but the rest of the living and bedroom area is relatively musty and dark. It is really nice to have a grill on the grounds which we used everyday and a path directly to the rocky beach. We grilled oysters we picked daily. We also used the fire pit most nights which was fun. The cabin is also an easy and short drive to the supermarket, gas station, Lake Cushman and may hiking trailheads.
Cons: First, was that the cabin has a great view and proximity to beach but we figured the entire property in front of the house was private. The last night of our stay a family pulled up an RV and camped out. They were up pretty late and when we woke up the morning, our otherwise great unobstructed view was instead a view of no less than 8 people and 2 dogs eating breakfast on a picnic table next to the RV...right out the bedroom window. They had their electric cable running across the front of the property to a neighbor on the other side of the house who was also renting. It was a real compromise of privacy and we would have really disliked our time there if we hade more than a night and morning of it. I contacted Cynthia who replied quickly, and she mentioned that the RV was either on neighbor property or Mason County property and nothing to do. She apologized but unfortunately it wasn't an issue she had control over. Fortunately it was our last night and the morning to follow we packed and left. It was not what we expected or wanted. In all fairness, it was a holiday weekend and I doubt that is a usual circumstance. But it happened. Next issue was that there was no wireless. That seems odd since wireless is complimentary with most properties these days. Third was no bedroom doors.
Overall Cynthia was quick to reply by phone/email and pleasant in person. There is a very long rental agreement which is a bit overwhelming at first but most of it makes sense except knowing the physical boundaries of her property. Overall we had a fine stay and depending on the group, it could work out well!
This cozy cottage was like going to our own cabin in the mountains, but on the canal instead. It's clearly a place that's well-loved, and I mean that in the sense that it's charming and has personality.
The location is lovely -- very quiet, and right on the beach. Bring sandals, or better yet, water shoes: the rocks and oyster shells are sharp! We were playing cards one morning and my son looked out the window to see a huge seal taking up a neighbor's swim float.
It's a quick drive to town -- I don't think I'd chance walking along the narrow road -- with a decent coffee shop, a distillery (not open when we drove past), and good food (with huge portions) at The Tides, including a hangtown fry (eggs with oysters).
We had a nice hike to a waterfall, lunch in the sun at a marina on the water, and make excellent use of the BBQ. A very relaxing and satisfying stay.
Cynthia's home is located on the lovely Hood Canal. There were several oysters, clams, starfish, and hermit crabs to explore on the beach. The kitchen had many amenities, and the fridge seemed new and sparkling clean! The house seems best suited for families or intimate friends, as there are no doors between rooms. The house is cozy, though, and we would certainly stay here again for the price. Thanks for your hospitality, Cynthia!
Great time, great cabin, great location. Perfect for 2 couples or more if you don't mind sharing a room. Siting by the fire out by the water is a great way to spend an evening or 3. Fully recommended.
Everything went very smoothly and Cynthia was a great host. She made communication very easy, and even found and saved a special Mug that our group left at the cabin.
We went for Thanksgiving and stayed at Shep's Castle for 4 nights. We were sad to leave. It's a great little cabin right on the water and although we aren't a fan of oysters there are tons on the beach right in front for those of you who do! It says in the description that the kitchen has everything you could possibly need and we were happy to find that to be true. There grocery store about 3 miles away and we did our shopping there. The cabin itself was small but comfortable and we will definitely be staying there again!
We had a great time in the Olympic Peninsula area. The home works great as a place to come back to. We had a family of 4 (teenagers and 2 adults); and stayed for more than a week so my only comment would be that luggage/clothing for 4 full size adults is a lot for this little place to handle. The second bedroom has no closet storage so the luggage has to be in the living room or on the floor in the main bedroom. Outside of being cramped for some storage space, everything was good. The neighbors to the east are very friendly and offered lots of help/feedback.
The beach in front of the house is perfect for gathering oysters at low tide or for hanging out. The walk along the beach at low tide is wonderful and the seals that come to visit in the morning are a great treat.
I would visit again.
Great place to get away. We took our two kids and they had a blast looking for shells and roasting marshmallows! We live in Tacoma and it was just over an hour to get there, which makes it perfect for weekend getaways.
Cynthia was a great communicator and had everything ready to go for us upon our arrival as she promised. Many oysters for the picking at low tide and a bbq to cook them on. She also had a well equipped kitchen including a shucking knife! We had a marvelous time and will definitely be back!
Just the most wonderful couple ever! So sweet and we so enjoyed their visit. Our guest house was immaculate and we welcome them back anytime. Perfect Air bnb guests!!! Can't wait to visit their beautiful listing. Hope you get to meet on one of their many adventures:)
Cynthia was a great guest. She was very considerate and a pleasant guest. I would definitely recommend her to other hosts.
