Waking up to bedroom windows of looming trees and to sounds of a stream (that we kept confusing for strong winds) is such a delight for the city folk we are. Ian's apartment is perfection - everything is there, best of all a fireplace and a lovely kitchen. And there's even chairs to sit outside by the stream...blessed to have witnessed autumn foliage in such a place. And then... if I needed another sign of gratitude masked as coincidence, I ran into my neighbor (all the way from Red Hook Brooklyn) at the nearby gas station. A lovely lovely time. Thank you !
Sousan, it was a pleasure to host you at the Fall's peak. There are many seasonal peaks throughout the year here and you're very welcome to comeback for another. Thank you!
Ian was a great host. He met us on arrival and showed us the ropes. The house was AMAZING. What a great spot. Everything was clean and well organized. I can't express how happy we were.
Ian's house was fantastic! Perfect autumn getaway. Right by a breathtaking stream, secluded yet only a 5 min drive to nearby Phoenicia. We spent a lot of time at the house reading and relaxing by the fire (there is a wood stove). We also enjoyed making dinner (there is a fully stocked kitchen). Ian even brought us a bag full of herbs from his garden. I can't recommend it enough.
Thank you Effie for such a glowing review. It was really a joy having you stay.
Ian was an awesome host! He gave us some great recommendations on where to eat, swim and hike. I really enjoyed the house; there are a lot of artistic details that make it special and it was lovely to wake up and have a cup of coffee along the stream out back. We had a very peaceful weekend here and appreciated that Ian was around to answer questions. It was a short walk to the Chichester Yoga studio - an added bonus and a quick drive into Phoenicia. I would definitely recommend this listing to anyone looking for a city getaway or a central jump off point to explore the beautiful Catskills region.
My girl and I went to Ian's place for 2 nights, it was truly one of the most extravagance beautiful places I have ever seen, Ian's took care of all the essentials including food and drinks and a vast knowledge for attractions, hikes, lakes etc. recommended to all.
My boyfriend and I stayed the weekend at Ian's place and had a really great time. We spent a lot of time relaxing by the stream. We did get to chat with Ian a bit, and he gave us some good hiking tips. Definitely recommend!
Ian was there to greet me and otherwise left us in peace and privacy. I was there for a quick overnight but enjoyed a walk to the stream, hummingbirds right outside the windows, and large kitchen for cooking.
Ian's apt was fantastic! The swimming stream was the perfect. My fiance and I fell in love with this place. We are definitely coming back!
Ian is a great host. He went above and beyond the entire weekend, including bringing by fresh fruit and milk. He also provided great information about things to do in the area that we couldn't have found elsewhere. Also, the location is phenomenal with its proximity to the stream and many of the surrounding sights. Tip: Kaaterskill Falls...go there.
I think Ian's listing on Airbnb could benefit from a little 'truth in advertising,' and note some things that might have affected our decision to stay there. First of all, it should be noted at the outset that the 'retreat' is in fact a basement apartment under his family's home. It seems a bit disingenuous NOT to mention that. Despite Ian's best efforts, we had A LOT of problems with noise (i.e. loud footsteps and sometimes a murmuring t.v.), and therefore did not find our experience at all restful. In fact, we ended up coming back two nights early because we were so exhausted from being woken up throughout the night and especially in the early mornings (5:30am - 7:30am). The property is beautiful and well-located, but the lack of privacy definitely undermined the feeling of it being a retreat. We also felt that the apartment could have been a bit cleaner and could definitely benefit from having a dehumidifier or two (anything we left on the floor would get wet!). That might also help the smell of mildew and mold. Ian is a gracious host, so nothing personal here--it just wasn't a good fit for us, since we were really hoping to have a more isolated and quiet retreat from the city. For these reasons, I wish the listing had noted more explicitly that it was part of his family home and that'd we be interacting with people pretty much every time we came and went.
