I'm originally from the LaSalle section of Niagara Falls, New York, and my wife, Regina, is from Walding, Austria. I served eight years in the U.S. Air Force -- working with SR-71's in California and England, F-4G's in West Germany, and B-52's in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I 'flew' an IBM Selectric III.
Regina and I met in Marquette, Michigan, where I was an undergrad at Northern Michigan University and she was a nanny. Before moving to Hillsdale, we lived for six years on the Keweenaw Peninsula, the northernmost part of Michigan. The Mackinaw Bridge is half-way between Hillsdale and our old home of Hancock (ten hours away), which should give you an idea of how big our beautiful state is! Our past lives and homes in the Great Lakes region (Michigan, western New York) and in Europe (Austria, Germany) are reflected in some of the decor and books found in the Hutch.
Our two daughters are students at Hillsdale College, and our son is a home-schooled high school freshman who likes Taekwon-Do, the Boy Scouts, his yellow lab Jean Louise (Scout), and his mandolin. Although we are called "townies" by some at Hillsdale College, we are grateful that our girls can still attend a place like Hillsdale. This nationally-known and elite little school still believes that truth, goodness, and beauty are both objective and knowable, so it's little like going back to the 1950's -- in a very good way.
Regina, an Austrian elementary school teacher by profession, teaches (or has taught) at home, at a Montessori preschool, and at Hillsdale College as an adjunct professor of German. She is the farmer, baker, and creative artisan of the family. In fact, Regina has a baking and crafts business called Mamas Bäckerei, which has a website easily found with a web search engine. She not only bakes great breads and makes delicious cheese with the assitance of our goats, she also spins and knits beautiful things to wear.
I teach English in a local public high school, have served on the board of directors of a classical charter school, and will soon appear in a documentary on the first liberal art (grammar). I enjoy writing, sleeping, prog rock, Jerry Garcia, Doctor Who, Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis, the Book of Concord, good wine, and diagramming sentences.
The Hutch is still very much an experiement for us, and we hope that we will have guests, especially fellow Hillsdale College parents.
