We really enjoyed our 5-day stay at Mango Ridge. Michael is a very gracious host and recommended a lot of fun things to do in the Portland area. The bamboo cabin is lovely - private but close enough to the action, has an amazing view of the bay from its porch, and has everything you need to cook and relax if you want. We were very comfortable and were sad to leave. Highly recommended.
thanks for being great guests..!
A fantastic few days in Port Antonio and a great place to stay. The views were amazing and had a great time staying there.
I had a great experience that was enhanced with the great location, and the helpfulness and kindness of my hosts Michael and Robin.
Excellent place to stay, can't imagine any better for the price. Mike is fantastic, very friendly and accommodating. Rooms are clean and comfortable in a great location. Be prepared to climb some steps and bring mosquito repellant- well it is rain forest- but we had a fantastic couple of days. Portland is a must if you are touring Jamaica- really beautiful!!
I stayed in both the sunrise and bamboo cottages. They were both more than I could have hoped for. The location can't be beat for the ambience, view and feeling like you are really part of Port Antonio.
Michael and Robin were both very welcoming and helpful. They made the experience for me.
Get ready for the stairs, because they're worth it.
We stayed at Mango Ridge for two nights and it was the best first airbnb experience anyone could ever ask for. A couple days before arriving we'd told Mike that we'd be arriving in the early afternoon because we were taking public transport from kingston and wasn't sure how long it would take, but we arrived a lot earlier than expected. We should've called to say we were going to be early, but when we arrived at Mango Ridge (which is easy to find and get to on foot from the heart of Port Antonio) we were pleasantly greeted by Mike's son, Robin, and lead to Bamboo--the top cabin--where Mike was getting our cabin ready. He didn't seem bothered and i had a good convo with him where he answered questions we had about places to eat & beaches to visit etc. Although we didn't find the time to accept them, he was also kind enough to invite us to his daughter's synchronised swimming competition, as well as to a game of dominos. The cabin itself was very clean, and beautifully decorated (there are meshes on most of the windows and a net around the bed, but we really didn't have a problem with bugs at all). I really loved the books he had on the birds and trees that surrounded the area. The view: breathtaking. If we didn't have to leave for food and beach, we wouldn't have left the cabin at all. The kitchen is equipped for light cooking, and there were two cold beers in the fridge. On our last morning, we saw Robin picking coconuts from a tree on the property, and just as we were about to ask him if we could buy one, he came up to offer us two--for free :) We weren't sure about check-out time, but when Mike told us we had to leave by 12 because a guest was moving into the cabin, he told us we could arrange with her to stay later if we wanted, but we decided to hustle and leave. it wasn't any problem at all.
The neighbourhood is mostly quiet, easily walkable, and there are quite a few restaurants around. The nearby Marina is a really nice. There will be loud music at night coming from a good distance away, but being Jamaican i expected it and wasn't bothered at all. Oh! And the steps that go all the way to the top are definitely more suited for those who are fit and travelling light. But they are manageable even if you aren't TOO fit or travelling TOO light. The wifi didn't work on the first day--but it was remedied and worked like a charm for the rest of our stay. Mango Ridge is also queer friendly, which i was delighted to find out. The people in town of Port Antonio, however, depending on how you look--are not.
thanks for such a thoughtful review..hope to see u again soon..
Mikes cabin was one of our most favourite places we stayed in Jamaica! It was simple, safe, clean and had a great view! Also a very handy location to everything. Mike was a great host, giving us helpful advice when we asked, but also gave us privacy.
Would recommend to stay on Mango ridge to anyone going to Port Antonio!
English version: Mike is a great host, highly recommended. Friendly, attentive, respectful, was there whenever we needed. He shared with us very precise information about Port Antonio and its surroundings and some very nice talks that made this part of our trip memorable!
My husband and I stayed by Michael's for one night because we wanted to escape the heat of Kingston and enjoy wonderful Portland. It was a very good decision. Michael was friendly and very helpful for the short time we were there. He gave nice tips for places to eat. The view from our little house was perfect, especially in the morning. The steps to get there was a bit of a struggle as mentioned in the description, but if you pack light and be patient, you will see it was worth it in the end!
thanks for the review and the advice..
My friend and I had the best time at Bamboo Port Antonio. It was easier to find than expected and Mike was really lovely. He was full of recommendations for us and helped with anything we needed.
Bring some mosquito coils or citronella candles. We did and we were (website hidden) facilities were good and the stairs weren't that bad. We climbed them with 20kg back packs.
Would definitely stay again!
I stayed at Mango Ridge Guest Cottages a number of years ago and had a blast. Michael is a great host and can help you get anywhere and do anything in the Port Antonio area- which is a terrific area. The cottages were comfortable, the atmosphere relaxed and the stairs provide a great workout! I will absolutely stay there again when I next go to Jamaica.
