We (email hidden) for the second time, and we loved it again. This room is on the second floor on the side of the street, rather than the side of the gym. We preferred this room. All of the windows open, and there are shutters like cupboard doors. When the shutters are closed, there is no light or sound from the street. One would sleep very, very well. José and his staff member Blanca are very kind and attentive. Since José already knew us, we had the opportunity to spend more time with him, but my husband and I also had the time to go out and do things on our own whenever we wished. My husband is a baker, and we had two pizza parties at the house. We had a lot of fun with the other guests and José's friends and family. We had a great two weeks!
José is an excellent host, and I quite enjoyed his company. He cares a lot about giving visitors a good experience, and regularly considers ways of improving his home. He took me and a couple other guests out on a trip to Hierve el Agua, and he and I spent hours together working on my Spanish and his English (which is quite good, but not fluent).
I mostly stayed in "Room 3", on the top floor by the open air terrace and indoor kitchen. The room was small but certainly enough for me and has good light and a comfortable bed. I stayed briefly in "Room 2", but its window looks out into the adjacent gym and was too noisy with the gym's rock music.
The kitchen is very well stocked with all the usual tools, a lot of knives, a very good blender, a mechanical juicer and an electric one. There are a number of common ingredients on hand, like rice, oil, and seasonings. I enjoyed making regular licuados or jugos for my breakfast.
The location is fantastic, and only a few blocks away from mercado, bakeries, microbrews...
We are foodies, and wanted to include the experience of cooking with local ingredients on this trip. Our little kitchenette was in good use, and if we wanted to cook something more elaborate we could use the rooftop kitchen.
Jose was very helpful and welcoming. The few tiny snags that came up were promptly taken care of, since he is in the house.
The apartment has a great layout, and we enjoyed having a separate living/dining room, since one of us gets up earlier than the other.
The noise from the street was what you can expect in Mexico, part of life, and we had no problems with that - actually liked it. The other apartment (on the same floor) faces inwards, has a better layout, with the kitchenette area, but has noise from the gym next door. I liked our version better because of that.
If we came back to Oaxaca for a third, fourth, fifth... trip, we would definitely stay at his home again.

I highly recommend staying with José in one of his beautiful rentals. It is exceptionally clean and conveniently located, with all of the accommodations I needed to be comfortable away from home. I really loved that when leaving the airbnb I could see Santo Domingo from the doorstep and be within a few feet of many great restaurants and cafés. José is also an excellent host. He was fun to be around and generously spent time and energy acquainting us with Oaxaca. I would only want to stay in this place when returning to Oaxaca.
El hospedaje esta perfecto, la habitación es muy cómoda a solo metros del centro histórico, muy tranquilo y seguro, Jose tiene mucha onda tomamos mas de un mezcla juntos, de seguro me hospedería en alguna oportunidad allí
Jose is a wonderful host. I can’t thank him enough for all the things he has done to make my visit to the beautiful state of Oaxaca worthwhile. Jose is very hospitable and accommodating. He picked me up at the airport on the day of my arrival. He walked me around the plaza and had coffee in his favorite coffee shop and worked on my itinerary. On my first night we had a mezcal and introduced me to the other guests. I felt so welcomed and at home in the casa. During my stay, he also took the time to walk me around and do shopping in few of the many markets of Oaxaca which I enjoyed so much.
Casa JM is centrally located in Oaxaca City. It is close to many courtyard cafés, art galleries, restaurants and convenience store, and also to many of the city’s known tourist spots.
I stayed in the private room 3 on the 3rd floor. I love the seclusion and most of all the panoramic view of the Sto. Domingo Church in the rooftop. There is a cozy sitting in the rooftop. The shared kitchen is conveniently next to my room and it is scrupulously clean. The room has a new A/C and not used for long because of the cool breeze at night sweeps me away to sleep.
I highly recommend to any traveler who plans to visit Oaxaca to stay in Casa JM. It is very affordable, near to places that I bet will interest you and being manned by very friendly, knowledgeable and receptive host.
Jose was an amazing host. He and his mother are super accommodating, friendly and helpful. He took me all around the city and showed me some great food places and fun attractions. We also went for a day trip out to the markets in Tlacolula and Teotitlan de Valle which was a wonderful cultural excursion. He has vast knowledge about Oaxacan culture, history and customs. For my first time in Oaxaca it was a great experience to have such a welcoming host. I am excited to have him as a contact and friend when i move to Oaxaca in a couple of months.
Oh and also his house is beautiful and it could not be in a better location. The rooftop terrace is top notch and a great place to work, relax or spend time with other house guests and friends.
I would highly recommend for anyone to stay here.
Thank you Jose!! Hasta pronto!
Jose is a very friendly and helpfully host. We liked to stay in his apartment with kitchen\livingroom and bedroom, small windows to a Gym.-and this was the only minus-the rythm from7 to 11pm. No Gym at Saturdayafternoon and sunday . When we closed the window it was ok.
But the best of all was the Terrace on the Roof, there was Coffe and we had there breakfast every morning with a wonderful view .The house is very well located, only a few meters to Sto. Domingo and the pedestrian zone. All is very very clean, I will come again.
Absolutely Fantastic location!! Right in the heart of Oaxaca. Walking distance to all museums, galleries, restaurants, bars, mezcalerias. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious. There is even a terraza on the 3rd floor. Jose is an exceptional host, full of information and very kind. I will coming back to his place!!!
Jose came to stay for a weekend with my fiance and I in Portland, Oregon and I must say that he is a welcome addition to any home. It's obvious from the very start that he is an incredibly polite, considerate and caring individual. We actually only spent a short while with Jose in his hometown of Oaxaca and had such a great time that we invited him to stay with us in the US. While we were there, we saw his fabulous apartment where he has hosted many students there on exchange and he kindly drove us around the outskirts of Oaxaca for a day. I recommend Jose with the utmost confidence! Definitely give him a shout if you're ever in the area.
