A friendly, cordial Oaxacan family, with 20 years of experience receiving guests into our home and apartments. We are interested in showing you the culture and language of Oaxaca.
This guesthouse was ideal for my one month stay in Oaxaca. The room was clean, airy and very comfortable. The location was perfect - one block from Santo Domingo and a short walk to the Zocolo - the center of activity in Oaxaca. Jose was a friendly, gracious and most accommodating host. I enjoyed spending time with him and his family and would definitely consider staying there again.
My girlfriend and I decided to go to Oaxaca on a last minute trip to Mexico. We wanted a central location and she found Jose's beautiful home. Only two blocks from Plaza Santo Domingo and five from the Zocalo, we were in the right place. We were able to easily walk to the sites we wanted to see. Jose was also kind enough to take us to a Mezcal factory on his free time. The room was clean, bathroom in good operation, and we had everything we needed including a safe. The view from the terrace of Santa Domingo is beautiful and the cool nights make it a great place to share a relaxing and romantic moment. We definitely recommend Jose's place and hope to return someday in the future. Thanks again Jose.
Very good location, the room is very comfortable, kitchen fully equipped and José was a nice host. I recommed you to stay in José´s house.
We couldn't have asked for a more perfect location to live for 7 weeks and to truly experience Oaxaca so easily.
I think it's important to point out that the house is attached to a very loud gym that plays loud pop music 6:30am -10pm Monday-Friday, and then shorter hours on Saturday(it closes at 3pm). The windows are great at keeping the noise out but if you like to keep them open for fresh air then you'll have to listen to Katy Perry a lot. FYI: if you don't want to buy a membership you can buy a card good for 10 visits for $500 pesos.
Our place was on the first floor and is perfect if you're there during the hot season like we were. The apartment stayed very cool compared to the outside heat.
Jose, our host, was wonderful! His family has decades of hosting international students so he is aware and thoughtful towards his guests' needs. Plus, he makes an amazing tlayuda and has excellent mezcal taste! Definitely try "El Rey de Matatlan" reposado if you have the opportunity. One of my favorite memories of our stay there was just hanging out on the terrace on Jose's birthday and getting to chat with his uncle (former coffee grower), nephew, and his cousin (I think) who makes commercial mezcal, and listening to various Spanish language singers on YouTube. These are the type of moments why I love traveling.
The terrace on the third floor is WONDERFUL!! You can see Santo Domingo Church to the east and Guelaguetza to the west. I had a couple of friends stop by and they were very jealous of the terrace. :)
I can't stress enough how perfectly located this apartment is to amenities (we used a lavanderia two blocks south on Garcia Virgil) and convenient access to all the enjoyment of Oaxaca. Next door is 'Gourmand' with great international beer and yummy tapas, around the corner are numerous cafes (our fave being Cafe Brujula's Darth Roasted), and it's 2 blocks from Santa Domingo which is where all the fun happens during the weekends and all festive times (i.e., Easter, the city's anniversary, etc). Make sure to be there around 6:30pm on a Saturday which is usually when a wedding calenda (parade) starts and heads down Alcala street. THAT is a treat!
My husband and I loved our stay and we believe the apartment played a huge part of it. We were sad to go and would rent it again the next time we go.
Jose was a lovely host and I would highly recommend his place in Oaxaca. It is in a great location and I had no trouble navigating my way through the city from his house. He was very informative and had many suggestions for great this to do around the city. The house and room was very clean and the view from the terrace is beautiful.
Clean, safe, great location. A pretty nice amount of space for the price and the location. My one complain is that when you take a shower you have to turn the hot water on full blast to prevent the shower from making a horrible rattling noise. The result is that the hot water runs out really really quickly, but the good news is that it seems to replenish itself very quickly as well, so there's not a problem if someone's showering after you.
It has more of a hostel feel than a home feel, but it's nice if you want to come and go in privacy, and someone came and cleaned the place and made up the bed regularly, which was nice.
Jose was a very nice host who made sure my experience in Oaxaca was a positive one. He shared many cultural tips with me, showed me around town and took me to Monte Alban. I really appreciate all his help and his hospitality! The location was right in downtown, very easy to walk to anywhere. Oaxaca is a place full of history and cultures, having a good host who is so knowledgeable of his hometown such is definitely a plus!
We had a terrific time staying at José's place. He's an excellent host-- very responsive, friendly, and welcoming. José was helpful in every way (he fixed a very minor issue with the showerhead in no time and he made sure we didn't miss our early-morning taxi to the airport). In short, our stay couldn't have been better-- and nothing beats the location. I recommend José's place wholeheartedly, and I'd gladly stay there the next time I'm in Oaxaca.
We really enjoyed our stay in Oaxaca at Jose’s house. Upon our arrival he oriented us by walking us down to a nearby restaurant since we got in too late to go exploring. Throughout the remainder of our trip he was very attentive and always there when we needed him: he gave us recommendations, directions to the sights as well as conveniences.
The house is very centrally located, just two blocks from the church and all the downtown action. The room was very comfortable; ours gave onto the street, so there was significant street noise, especially on Friday and Saturday nights as you have read in previous postings, so we bought ear plugs as Jose suggested. The fabulous rooftop terrace more than made up for that – we spent several mornings, afternoons and evenings relaxing and enjoying the view of downtown and the mountains.
In summary, this was a great experience with excellent value. Muchas gracias, Jose!
José es un anfitrión muy atento, dispuesto a ayudar en cualquier momento. Lugar céntrico y estratégico para recorrer los sitios de interés. Gracias.
Jose came to stay for a weekend with my fiance and I in Portland, Oregon and I must say that he is a welcome addition to any home. It's obvious from the very start that he is an incredibly polite, considerate and caring individual. We actually only spent a short while with Jose in his hometown of Oaxaca and had such a great time that we invited him to stay with us in the US. While we were there, we saw his fabulous apartment where he has hosted many students there on exchange and he kindly drove us around the outskirts of Oaxaca for a day. I recommend Jose with the utmost confidence! Definitely give him a shout if you're ever in the area.
