We (a family of three adults from New Zealand) stayed in Alcaucin for two weeks late April-early May 2015 and had a wonderful time! The apartment was perfect for us and was just has shown. The weather was mid to high 20's. The village was just gearing up for the summer so some restaurants not open, but Carlos at El Rancho looked after us and the people in the small grocery shops, pharmacy and bakery were warm and friendly - very patient with our beginners level Spanish. We totally recommend Alcaucin for a traditional Spanish village experience and thank Lee for his timely communication, advice on arrival and driving the car up through the narrow streets on the first day (which we were able to do ourselves without mishap in the end).
Everything was really well arranged and we were met by Gemma and Rema without probs despite being rather earlier than anticipated and not giving them the notice asked for because of phone issues!
Lee was great - visited us a couple of times to talk through the house and village etc. Texted first to arrange so not intrusive and v helpful.
The house is lovely. We visited during the coldest winter in 40 years so it was a bit of a shock but a lovely house and village. Highly recommend the local bar and restaurants - everyone v welcoming.
Greeted by 2 lovely English speaking local girls who showed us around. The house was perfect for us, and greatly enjoyed the roof top terraces. Good DVD collection for the cold evenings in.
Wonderful little village and enjoyed the Xmas nativety celebration in the town square below. Would definitely recommend this place.
We really enjoyed our stay at Paul's house in Alcaucin. The village was quiet and not touristy, and the people were very warm and friendly. We were even visited by a park ranger who told us about hikes nearby. The roof terrace and hot tub was our favorite place in the house, with views over the valley and amazing sunsets! If you come during winter, bring some firewood (there are electric heaters to keep the chill out). Once the sun goes down it gets chilly!
Thanks for a terrific stay!
We had a brilliant week at Paul's Spanish village house. The highlight was definitely the outside terrace which has spectacular views over the beautiful village towards the lake in the distance and the mountains to the side where the sun sets. The photos simply cannot do this incredible setting justice. We spent every evening sitting on the terrace having drinks and often used the gas BBQ and outside kitchen to make dinner (stopping at the supermarket for supplies on the way from Malaga airport as suggested in the directions is a good idea). The jacuzzi was great to cool off in during the hot afternoons and the darts board was good entertainment! There are lots of places in the sun and shade to sit or lie down and enjoy the view or read a book. The house stayed nice and cool inside despite it being 35 degrees plus outside, the terrace gets a nice cool breeze from the mountains. It's a traditional white washed rustic house in a rural village. With that in mind you shouldn't expect everything to work perfectly all the time (eg. wi-fi)! The village is quiet and peaceful, the only sounds being the crickets chirping from the national park behind, the occasional cockerel crowing, dog barking or cat meowing, the locals chatting in the streets below and the church bells chiming every half hour until midnight. It's a place to truly relax, but close enough to the crowded beaches and resorts for day trips. We visited the beaches at Marbella and Nerja, as well as heading over the mountains to Granada one day to see the Alhambra which was definitely worth the 3 hour round trip. I would say a car is essential. There is no parking directly at the house but we didn't find this a problem; there are two village squares a short walk away to leave your hire car. Although it's a small authentic Andalusian village, Alcaucin has several small and very reasonably priced bars/restaurants which were surprisingly busy in the evenings, as well as a cash machine and some small grocery shops (with traditionally erratic opening times!). The local people were really friendly, greeting us with a "Hola!" as we walked by. One local in the El Rancho Grande restaurant pointed out the international space station glistening in the sunset above the mountains. We were glad we'd brought our binoculars with us to look at the stars and the views down to the lake from the top deck of the terrace back at the house. Communication with Paul before arriving was great and Laura, an ex pat who looks after the villa, came to meet us at one of the local bars with the keys on arrival. The descriptions on the site are accurate. Our check out time was flexible which we appreciated as our flight home was late in the evening. If you're looking a really unique taste of rural Spanish village life instead of the usual high rise costa hotels,...
A great place to relax and explore, convenient for Malaga airport. We were a family of 4 and all enjoyed the activities around about including hiking in the park locally and in Torqual, canoeing and sailing on the lake, as well as restaurants by the beach and a trip to Alhambra de Grenada. Well equipped house with beautiful roof terrace, with wonderful panoramic views, great for sundowners! The hot tub was appreciated, great to relax after a day of activity and the log fire kept the evenings cosy in this early season.
