Found Helen's place to be in a great location, close to the number 6 local subway which gets you in to downtown Manhattan in around 30mins.
Helen was a good hostess who left you to your own devices, however, was happy to give advice when asked. She even was gracious enough to give up her own bedroom when other guests unexpectedly stayed longer so that we had the two separate bedrooms we initially were promised.
The house is old but comfortable with hot water and heating and close to supermarkets and a variety of eateries. Thanks to Helen for a great stay in Manhattan.
Helen was an understanding and adorable host. The room where we were staying, together with separate bathroom and kitchen on the same floor, gave us ample privacy.
It was a great place to stay! Helen was very friendly and helpful. Thanks a mill!
Great location 50 meters from 116th with Lexington subway, Groceries, etc... Great shower, heat and privacy... Helen is sweet and the house is very quiet. Definitively Stay here again!
Helen was a fantastic host! She was quick to answer every question I had before the trip and made my friends and I comfortable when we arrived. She was friendly and easygoing and gave us great suggestions for places to check out in the city. I loved that her townhouse is conveniently located near a subway stop. The neighborhood itself was lively and not once did I feel unsafe, even when coming back late at night. We had free use of the third and fourth floors and the five of us had plenty of space to sprawl out. The bathrooms could use some cleaning but they weren't unbearable. Overall, I felt at home the whole trip. I would like to thank Helen and her family for being such accommodating hosts!
Helen is a wonderful host. Her townhouse is about 200 yards from the 6 train. She has a great setup for guests with third and fourth floors set up for our use. And she has a wonderful little dog. Thanks for the stay and I'll be back.
I would recommend Helen's place. She is a nice host and let us use the floors without interrupting. For the price we spent, it's absolutely worth it.
I've been to NYC so many times and experienced many hostels. I visited NYC again with a small group of friends in November and spent most of the day time out; it's a nice, cozy place for us to rest after a fun day in the city. it's a few blocks away from subway 6, which connect to midtown pretty easily (in 20-30mins, if you manage your time and don't have a tight schedule).
It's an old house, an average place. If you expect some place nicer and extremely clean like hotel, then you should pick a fancy hotel instead; otherwise, this's a good option for travelers to save money and stay for the nights of their visit.
Helen's house is exactly as described. It has lots of character. The accommodation is spacious, warm (I stayed there in November!) and peaceful. It was very convenient having a subway station at the corner of the street and there are plenty of shops nearby. I felt I had a very authentic experience of living New York.
I don't recommend this place after my four days of stay. The biggest problem during the stay was the hygiene conditions of the apartment. Both me and my partner were very bitten up by the flea, very much all over the body. Now I have a hard time showing my arms and the bites are enormous and intense. I still have around 12 places on my legs and arms, red and itchy, which made the trip hard and disagreeable.
The place is very much not heated, and there are holes on the window so even you shut the window, it wasn't bearable at night. I needed to take a towel to fill the gap between the A/C and the window to prevent not getting sick while trying to escaping from the flea.
I am not new to New York and I think I have been staying in bad places before, but this is too much. Overall, I think that this place is not qualified at all for a place to stay.
The host canceled my reservation 10 days before arrival.
It was great to have Helen and her friend here...sadly since i was on the east coast i did not get to meet them! our place was left just as it was found. i would highly recommend her as a guest, and felt confident everything would be great since she was experience as an airbnb host as well. thanks Helen!
