The "Rough It Cabin":
We enjoyed our stay at the "Rough It" Cabin. The cabin itself is very simple but great if you're looking for something a bit fancier than camping. The memory foam bed is FANTASTIC - super comfortable and cozy with a nice window that lets in the morning light. We used the one-burner stove inside for heating water and basic one-pot meals. The interior solar lights worked great. The solar shower worked fairly well. The limitation is when the sun is at the right angle - the only times the water was warm enough between 2-5pm in the afternoon (in April, mind you). The composting toilet made for an interesting experience as well. One thing to note: the solar shower provides the only running water at the cabin itself and it comes straight from the river so it needs to be boiled or treated before drinking. Colleen was great about letting us access her house to fill up the occasional water jug, use her bathroom, etc.
The "Kitchen Cabana":
There's a two-burner "Camp Chef" stove and a mini-fridge about a 5-minute walk down the hill to the "Kitchen Cabana," which has a lovely view of the river. The Cabana also has an "on demand" hot water shower if the solar shower at the "Rough It" cabin isn't working. Note: The "Rough It" cabin doesn't pick up a strong Wifi signal so the best place on the property to get a wireless connection is outside the Cabana.
Lewiston & the surrounding area:
The property is right on the Trinity River. We didn't do any whitewater boating while staying at Colleen's but we saw a number of happy paddlers making their way downriver. It's about a 10-15 minute drive to Lake Lewiston where you can kayak, canoe, go fishing, etc. There are also nice, quiet running and hiking trails further afield - about a 30-40 minute drive to the best ones. Lewiston is very small - just a market or two and a post office. Weaverville is about a 20-minute drive away with some restaurants, a health food store and big supermarket, a couple of nice cafes, a ranger station, etc. We would have liked not having to get in our car so often but oh well.
Overall, this was a great deal considering the low price (t mind the occasional episode of water going out unexpectedly, not having 24/7 access to internet, etc.
If you're looking for an adorable tiny house and a host who will make you feel right at home you've come to the right place! Colleen was amazingly kind and made my friend and I feel incredibly welcomed, we only wished that we could stay longer. The house is indeed tiny, but comfortable and cozy, and there is plenty of beautiful land to explore right outside the door.
Colleen was a lovely host. She has a beautiful property in the mountains which is perfect for resting, rejuvenation, and respite.
Colleen was an excellent host! We enjoyed our stay greatly
Beautiful scenery, and such a quaint town with really nice people. Colleen and Angel were both very courteous and respectful, which made us feel comfortable. We left early next morning to try to go see the Trinity Lake, and it was only a fifteen minute drive and it was to die for. Amazing view of the stars from the cabana.
Thanks for a great stay Colleen. The property was beautiful and the room perfect for my trip! Hope to see you again soon.
Colleen was a very friendly and open host. The room was warm and described appropriately. Perfect place for anglers. Nice kitchen cabana!
My boyfriend and I spent 2 nights with colleen and angel. It was fantastic. The room was small and cozy. We brought a small propane heater and were comfortable all night. The cabana was really neat and had a nice shower and beautiful view of the river. Colleen and angel were so nice and invited us into their home for a delicious dinner. I can't wait to come back in warmer weather.
We had a wonderful time. The home was cozy, clean, and the location was really nice. The beautiful view overlooking the river from the spacious covered patio, says it all. It was more than what we expected and the hostess was kind and gracious. Thank you Colleen, we had a great time!
Colleen is fabulous. And I miss her dog Bailey already.
Colleen was such a great guest. The best part was she was interested in exploring the area and we had some wonderful chats over some delicious food and gorgeous scenery. I hope she comes back to stay again in the near future.
