This place was just what it sounds like, quite, relaxing and peaceful. The place itself is so cute and we had plenty of privacy. I would recommend picking up some food on the way in if you plan to be there an be enjoying some meals on the porch, as the grocery stores are back into town. We loved hearing the surf and visited the hot pools which are not far when it was a bit rainy and cold, they really helped to warm us up.
Mary was great, very welcoming and great at communicating with us. We were only there for three nights so we stayed pretty busy but would have liked to have spent more time just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Very relaxed and perfect if you are looking to get away from it all.
Wonderful stay at Pohoiki Cottage. Sound of the waves and the coqui made for a great natural connection.
So close to tidepools and lava walks everyday. Will recommend to others for their Puna trips. Mary provides everything you need for cooking meals. Thanks Mary
Mary was a fantastic host. From the moment we arrived on the Big Island and called her she was very helpful in every aspect, from finding her beautiful property to where to go and what to see. It was an experience filled with the Aloha energy.... the property was sweet - coconuts we could drink fresh coconut water out of, picking fresh fruit, actually being able to really Relax. :) This is a quiet, laid back part of the island that is close to a great retreat center if you are interested in a massage or a little yoga, fresh local food, flowers, fresh fruit, trees, surfing. Views of ocean were fantastic and magical drive into the area. My husband and I had an amazing time and would definitely go back to Mary's . We wanted something a little more laid back and not touristy and we got it - Maholo. :)
We had five relaxed days at the Pohoiki Bay Cottage.
The cottage is on beautyful private grounds and is well kept and very clean.
Mary & Michael are the perfect hosts.
If you like to explore the beautiful east coast shoreline along the scenic red road , it´s the right place for you.
Back on Big Island we would definitely like to stay there again.
Thank you Mary & Michael for this wonderful time.
Mary and Michael are really amazing hosts. They made sure that we we had everything we needed and were a wealth of info about the area.
The place itself is really great. It's a comfortable little place surrounded by lush green in every direction. As you fall asleep in the screened in porch area, we heard whales blowing out their blowhole nearby.
Overall, a totally unique, interesting and relaxing experience. We would definitely come back!
This cottage and the location are simply amazing. Our drive to the site was after sunset and the drive down the single-lane mango-tree-lined road was a truly magical experience. The cottage is just a few hundred feet from the ocean and the screened in porch is the perfect place to enjoy a drink and listen to the bird, frogs and waves. Because of our busy days we only but got to meet our hosts for a few minutes but I know it would be great to get to know them better. We are going to try hard to get back here in the future.
Listing was just as described and so very enjoyable. Booked one night in Kona so my wife and daughter could sit by a pool and drink a Mai Tai (wanted to try one) and they both couldn't wait to get back to cottage - peaceful, no people, felt like home.
Mary was gone, but Chan filled in wonderfully and made us feel very welcome. Thanks again, Chan.
Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed being off the grid and away from the heavily touristed areas. I know we are still just Howlies where ever we go on the island, but we love talking with the locals, shopping at the farmer's markets, hanging at Uncle Roberts and enjoying what is special about the places we visit. Puna was fun and Mary's cottage was fantastic.
We heartily agree with the reviews already written describing this charming cottage in a tropical piece of paradise.
1. The generosity and true Aloha spirit of the owners and host. We approached Mary with very little advanced notice, requesting to stay for 4 nights. She graciously accommodated us in spite of the very inconvenient timing. Chan was our host and could not have been more attentive.
2. The screened in porch. You'll find yourself not wanting to go anywhere as the porch is so relaxing, fully screened and offers a beautiful view of the property with a glimpse of the water.
3. The bounties of the property. We were delighted to enjoy coconut, passion fruit, papaya, pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, basil, cilantro, mint and tomatoes! We love to cook and couldn't believe the great fortune of harvesting fresh from the property. Not to mention the beautiful foliage that surrounds you!
4. The fresh fish market in Pahoa. We would call in the morning to inquire about the catch of the day. We ate fresh ahi and ono all weekend! The fish and chips they also sell might be 'best ever'!
Minor drawback: the gorgeous tropical setting comes with bugs. Although the screened porch keeps the majority of bugs out, we did have a few mosquitoes join us on the inside. Only bothersome at night. There are also spiders, very actively spinning webs throughout the property. Nothing a spider stick can't fix!
This coming from a serious arachnophobe: don't let that deter you. You don't want to miss this place.
One more heads up... If you want sandy beach, this is not the best side of the island for that.
We had a wonderfully relaxing time and would return in a hot second.
The cottage was just as described: comfortable and roomy. It was a treat to be able to pick oranges, grapefruit and tangerines for breakfast every morning. Chan, taking care of the house in Mary's absence, was very friendly, available and helpful.
Pohoiki Bay Cottage was the cherry on top of the Big Island Cake! A really beautiful stunning cottage set in an idyllic location just down the road from Pohoiki Bay.
Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Mary and Michael however Chan was fabulous and proved to be a genuine Hawaiian Santa Clause surprising us with lovely gifts most days including amazing fruit from forest grounds.
Pohoiki Bay Cottage was the perfect place to spend xmas, a really stunning beautiful and very special place....We would love to go back.
