Casa de Helena is a private guest house which welcomes people from around the world. The closest airport is Liberia International 1 1/2 hour drive on good paved road.
Great place to stay. recommendation were great and Helena was very helpful. If you don't have a car-it is pretty far away from any town. Such a beautiful place to stay at.
We loved staying here. A place of peace and tranquility. Helena was away the first two days we were here - so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. I believe there is another apartment there - so it might not be as private when there are other guests there. This is on the windy corner of the lake which resulted in loud winds/chilly at night - we thought this was refreshing after spending a hot day kayaking the lake. Helena has a wonderful place - great attention to detail! We enjoyed cooking in the outdoor kitchen and then eating our meals swinging in the hammock. We awoke every morning to wildlife right outside the door! You definitely need a car if staying in this area - we rented a small two wheel drive and that got us around the country fine. Helena then helped us by setting up private driver/tour guide for the Rio Celeste which we would highly recommend. So, if you are looking for peace and a true Costa Rican experience - I would highly recommend Helena's. She is a very nice and thoughtful host!!!
Helena made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. The casita was wonderful. The beds were very comfortable and it was a welcomed relief to be up in the rolling hills around Lake Arenal where the temps were way cooler than the beach. We had the outside kitchen to ourselves and were happy to store our perishables in a good refrigerator. We were also happy to see that Helena recycles plastic, aluminum and paper - the proceeds from which support local schools. A true treasure. We'll be back!
Imagine the most perfect combination of indoor and outdoor living in a tropical garden. The bedroom - indoors, had windows onto the private garden that surrounded the bed at pillow height. The bathroom - indoors, was a luxurious design of creative excellence. The kitchen and living space were the true pinnacle of the experience, being outdoors, spacious and comfortable under a roof. Helena has space for yoga, and has the finest hung hammocks.
Helena met us upon our arrival and took the time to point out all the relevant amenities. The next day she helped us plan our excursions to Rio Celeste and Cerro Chato. She also provided a binder with information about many of the parks and destinations that guests might be interested in visiting.
We spent 3 nights in the small garden cabin, with large windows on 2 sides that put you right in the midst of a lush garden. The cabin is paired with a well-equipped outdoor kitchen, complete with large fridge, 2-burner propane stove, coffee maker (with complimentary coffee), and toaster oven. If you enjoy outdoor living, this kitchen space will likely appeal to you. A patio with very comfortable hammocks and a pair of sofas provide a pleasant setting for relaxing after a day exploring the Arenal area. Beside the patio is a modern tiled terra-cotta bathroom with (truly) hot shower.
Situated at the north end of Arenal Lake, in a small, well-maintained community, the Casa is easy to reach and find using Helena's directions. You can use this location as a base for trips to Arenal Volcano NP, Rio Celeste (Tenorio Volcano NP), or even Monteverde, but be aware that driving tends to take longer than you might expect, due to rough and tortuous roads.
This was one of the most beautiful and comfortable places we stayed while in Costa Rica, thanks to Helena's carefully designed spaces and aesthetic eye.
Helena responded to quickly to all our emails, before, during and after our stay at her Casita.
Beautiful and very peaceful. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed it.
My wife and I had a great stay at Helena's guest house. It was very comfortable and has a very well equipped kitchen. But I have to confess we didn't use the kitchen that much as we dined at nearly all the very good nearby restaurants Helena suggested.
We really enjoyed hearing the nearby monkeys every morning. Each day it was difficult to pull ourselves away from the private back deck where we had a wonderful jungle view and enjoyed seeing so many different and beautiful birds.
The neighborhood was very quiet and pleasant with beautiful views in every direction. There is a wonderful nearby country trail with amazing pastoral views.
Helena is a great host and pleasure to get to know.
If you are looking for a simple, clean and comfortable stay surrounded by natural beauty we definitely recommend Helena's guest house.
We had a wonderful time at Casa Helena. It is a beautiful spot, easy to locate and close to many tourist attractions (but remote enough to enjoy a genuine experience!). Helena was communicative prior to arrival and very helpful in providing us with site seeing recommendations. The room had everything we needed to enjoy our 6 day/7night stay, and the shared kitchen was fully equip.
We loved the Lake Arenal area, and when we come back we definitely would stay at Casa Helena!
Thanks providing us with a home-base during this fantastic experience!!
Emily and Matt
PS - If you decide to stay here, make sure you go to Equus - its a really cool BBQ, amazing food and a really cool set-up!
I stayed at La Casa de Helena last week and everything far exceeded my expectations. If you're looking an off the beaten path trip and trying to stay away from touristy Arenal, this is the place for you. Helena was so, so kind and helpful and picked up the phone anytime I called for directions to places in the area or for anything at all. Right outside your doorstep is a beautiful rainforest-like garden and an outdoor (covered) kitchen/sitting area with hammocks. You will see and hear birds, monkey, and nonstop wind (wind surfer heaven). Eat at Ekoos and try to go to the Fiesta de La Luna Llena if you can (an awesome dance party that happens only 4 times a year, tucked behind Ekoos in a multi-tiered, outdoor, stone structure in the middle of the woods. Go to Rio Celeste using Helena's shortcut (don't go the boring highway route) - it is the most beautiful drive I've ever been on with tons of ultra rural mountain and lake views. I would definitely recommend renting a pickup truck - we wouldn't have made it on some of the roads near Rio Celeste without one. I wish I could have stayed another week! I can't recommend Helena and her place enough.
We had a great stay Helena place. Slept very sound and waking up to the sound of the howler monkeys each morning was very cool.
She gave us very good Ideas on things to see and do in the aera.
just wished we had more time.
Casa De Helena was a great place to stay. There were four adults that fit very comfortably into the house, that has an open kitchen/dining/lounge and great outdoor area with beautiful gardens. Helena was a great host, she had lots of information about the local activities and sent us on a beautiful walk right around the corner that had an amazing view of the lake and several volcanoes. Helena was also very easily contacted when we needed her.
The location of her house was great, many restaurants and a brew pub close by and the drive to both Monteverde and La Fortuna were made easier with being in the middle.
My group and I would definitely recommend staying at Casa De Helena!
