After 13 bookings with Airbnb over 3 years, I've come to realise that guests receive no protection whatsoever from the site. Airbnb goes out of its way to protect hosts, but doesn't care at all about you as a guest. Did you know for example that the host can cancel at any time, even the day you arrive? Airbnb won't help you in that scenario (they claim they'll help find alternative accommodation that's available on their site but if there isn't any availability at the last minute then you're out on the street with nowhere to stay). Airbnb nowadays is about large rental companies posting listings which are more expensive than going to the rental company direct. You might think it's worth paying the extra for some sort of security that Airbnb might offer, but you're mistaken. My last ever booking with Airbnb turned out to be fraudulent. I was given a totally different apartment with fewer bedrooms, no lift, different location, worse quality than I booked and certainly not worth the price I paid. I tried to get this resolved by Airbnb, but they don't care at all. They passed on all of my money to the rental company despite my request to withhold it and offered a pathetic amount of compensation. My advice is steer clear of Airbnb. Have a look on other sites instead and book direct with the rental company for better protection.
