Murdo and I have just spent three nights at Dar Aquas in Fes hosted by Brian. The Dar itself was beautiful and had been lovingly restored by Brian. He was an excellent host and a mine of information about Fes with advice on what to see, where to eat and what to avoid! Lunch at Faisal and Saleh's cafe was brilliant value! It was nice to stay somewhere that had a real personal touch. The rooms were as in the photos and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. The Dar was positioned a few yards from the main souk which was a wonderful place. We travelled up from Marrakesh on the train (a very positive experience but go first class - still cheap!) and Fes was a little less frenetic which I preferred. Brian organised a car to take us to Volubilis which was well worth the trip. Altogether a very enjoyable stay.
I had a great stay here for my few nights in Fes. They even met me at the train station to bring me to their place in the medina. Clean room, great breakfast, very accomodating. I would visit again for sure.
I had the good fortune to stay at Dar Aquas during a recent holiday in Morocco. I had found out about the dar before Brian and Mary joined airbnb, through a mutual interest in food and cookery. I followed the progress of the renovations at Dar Aquas on facebook and contacted them independently when I was arranging the rest of my Moroccan accommodation through airbnb.
The Dar itself has been sensitively restored, traditional and local materials have been used throughout the building, hardware and furnishings. The beds are comfortable, the rooms offer tranquil privacy, the bathrooms are beautiful and the public spaces a delight. Coming back in the evenings to a pot of Louisa tea, some delicious sweetmeats and the house lit with candles was a charming touch.
Both Brian and Mary are a store house of knowledge concerning the architecture, history and culture of Fez, including contemporary culture, music and art. Mary has a keen eye for what is best in season and which market provides the best of whatever you are looking for.
They were exceptionally kindly hosts, considerate and informative. They were able to help my friend and I find our way around Fez much better than any tourist map.
Sadly, we had to leave very early on our last morning and didn't have time to sit at the table on the top floor for one of Mary's fabulous breakfasts. Mary prepared a "packed Breakfast" of such magnificence that it kept us well fed and in good spirits right through our long train ride back to Marrakesh.
Dar Aquas is a wonderful place, Fez is a most interesting and engaging city and your hosts are lovely, gentle people. Now I know that there are direct flights into Fez from the UK , I hope to return soon.
